Just that really.
My SIL is due her first baby in the next couple of months and I wanted to put together a little hamper of essentials for her and baby, other than the obvious vests, muslins, sleepsuits etc what's the best things to add? What were the best things you received or have gifted?

Ewan the dream sheep. That little woolly bugger worked bloody miracles 😂😂.

escapingthecity · 15/04/2022 21:39

Things we were given, or which I wish we'd been given:
For her: spritz for bits, some delicious chocolatey snacks, small flat stud earrings which baby can't scratch themselves on, bamboo breast pads, Audible subscription, Bodum insulated coffee cup, silk eye mask
For baby: Tuppence and Crumble star wrap and towel wraps, Matchstick Monkey teether, lambskin pram liner, Skwish toy, My 1st Years towel with personalised name, knitted wool cardigans (they're just very easy to put on a wriggly baby)

Preparation H cream, huge pot of Sudocrem, a bath water temperature gauge like a rubber duck (still have him), and a top and tail bowl. Lots of other things but those all got the most use.

Baby bundler. Complete revelation that it was possible to change a nappy without waking the baby up…

Hiphopskotch · 15/04/2022 21:41

"Cook!" vouchers to stock up the freezer.... such a good gift!

MrsBDarcey · 15/04/2022 21:43

One of those nose suckers for snot
But also chocolate and snacks and a keep warm, safe cup for brews
For the baby, better quality sleep suits than the ones k bought made me happy as did bibs as I had a puker

MayBeeMee · 15/04/2022 21:44

Best thing I received was a side of smoked salmon and a bottle of chilled champagne!

Best thing for my baby was a teddy from M&S - they’ve slept with it every night for over 17 years Smile

  1. A set of four little photo albums , 1-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-8 months, 8-12 months. This was 15 years ago so on the cusp of people taking digital pics rather than film pics, and it made me get pics printed that I might have left digital and now I have a lovely set of albums to look through. Whether people would like that now I don’t know.
  2. A bottle of champagne and a mega pack of nappies - champers and Pampers
Blipped · 15/04/2022 21:48

Ear thermometer

Theforest · 15/04/2022 21:49

A star shaped musical light show. My DC loved it and I credit his amazing sleep to it.

zippedyzzzzooo · 15/04/2022 21:49

Ewan the dream sheep and a morrck wrap blanket for the car seat.

MrsAvocet · 15/04/2022 21:50

Best thing I received was a big box of chocolates. It was kind of surprising as they were from a single male friend not known for his sensitivity, but he arrived and said "I bet everyone has brought baby stuff and nobody has bought a present for you. He was right, and I was really touched.

AuraBora · 15/04/2022 21:52

I recently had my second child and a good friend got me some Tisserand lavender pillow spray. I can't say have great sleep thanks to newborn but the lovely smell helps soothe and calm me at difficult points in the night!

AuraBora · 15/04/2022 21:53

Sorry not first but nice anyway!

Clevs · 15/04/2022 21:53

Homemade meals from my mum. In particular ones that could be eaten with one hand whilst I was breastfeeding.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 15/04/2022 21:54

Loads and loads of individually wrapped home cooked meals and sponge puddings from my mum. Priceless

YesILikeItToo · 15/04/2022 21:56

A Flensted mobile. I give them to everyone now.

DinosaursEatMan · 15/04/2022 21:57

A whole Stilton and interesting board books. Both bought as a present for myself - I was craving blue cheese and wanted books to read to dc that I actually could stand to read multiple times Easter Grin

Cuphalffullor · 15/04/2022 21:58

A bath support for the baby. Was very simple but meant he could be propped up slightly lying down in main bath.

TheMooch · 15/04/2022 22:01

Baby gym mat.
Bath support.

And the friend who made me a stack of lasagnes, soup and biscuits to freeze.

pintsizeprincess · 15/04/2022 22:02

Annabel Karmel baby weaning book. Sounds daft when you're in the hazy sleepless nights of the early days of having a newborn but it was honestly a godsend at the 6 month stage when I didn't know where to start with baby weaning. Lots of baby friendly recipies and helpful advice. Some of the recipies i used for the toddler years too. Definitely my most useful present by far.

boronia · 15/04/2022 22:31

The only gifts I remember are the home made meals - quiche, lasagne, big bowls of some vegetables and noodles from a neighbour on our first night home.

lotsofjellytotz · 16/04/2022 00:23

Thankyou, some really good ideas to add to my list on here!

A changing caddy with handle that I could cart from room to room, with a little clip on light attached so I didn't have to switch a big light on to change a nappy at night.

A heat pad for my back.

Audio books voucher.

Soft hair scrunchies

If breastfeeding - danish wool breast pads
