To not understand the need for "walks"

walkingDisaster22 · 14/04/2022 18:06

Anyone else similar to me and not understand the need for walks or enjoyment in walking.
My in laws are obsessed with walking and think i'm odd (or maybe a sloth!) for not wanting to go out daily walking.
Where is the enjoyment in mud and rain? I would rather chill with a good book. Please tell me I'm not on my own?

I love walking and in the wind and rain, always ending with a lovely reward such as a pub lunch pie and two glasses of red wine.

We are all different.

August1980 · 14/04/2022 19:51

I didnt think I liked it either OP, but have no choice as I walk 2 hours a day with the dog!

It’s grown on me!

Crazzzycat · 14/04/2022 19:52

I love walking, so much so that my DH calls me The Labrador, as I “need walking” every day 😂

I love other forms of exercise too, but nothing is as soothing to my soul as a brisk walk.

Benjispruce4 · 14/04/2022 19:53

I love walking for the fresh air, the exercise, the calming, mind clearing effect plus the dog would hate me if I didn’t walk her.

chaosrabbitland · 14/04/2022 19:54

no i walk if i need to go somewhere , on a nice day i do suggest to dd lets have a walk up to the park as i dont feel its good and must be boring for a 13 year old to sit in their room playing roblox all day which is what she would do if i didnt get her out , but if i was on my own then never , cant see the point of it , maybe if i lived in greece where it was actually really nice then i probably would want to go for a walk, but here in the uk never

MrsSugar · 14/04/2022 19:55

I don’t really like walking unless it’s somewhere nice. Just padding round the streets for the sake of it I just don’t get. I do it as I have a baby in the pram and it gets him fresh air and gets him settled but other than that I just don’t get walking around for no purpose to end up back where I started !

Herani · 14/04/2022 19:56

Lockdown made me feel quite bored with walking. We’re lucky enough to live on the edge of beautiful countryside….loads of amazing walks. By the end of lockdown I felt I knew every beach and twig and longed for a walk around a big city or London to see other people!

Merryoldgoat · 14/04/2022 19:57

I detest walking - I take no pleasure in it. Fine as transport, shit as a pastime.

EasterDecorations · 14/04/2022 19:57

I love it provided the weather isn't too hot (ideally below about 15° and not in full sun). I stop and take photos everywhere, even on the most mundane walks there will be something nice enough. But it wouldn't do if we all liked the same things.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 14/04/2022 19:59

So pleased to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks 'going for a walk' is tedious and pointless.
I'm happy to walk with a destination or purpose, or around a lovely busy city with lots to see, but as for looking at scenery or a 'view'? Nope.
I do put in lots of gym-work so I'm fit and active [and if made to go for a walk I out-pace everyone so as to get it over and done with]

Daqqe · 14/04/2022 20:01

Lockdown made me HATE walking 😂 I’m now just getting back into it.. I enjoy a walk so long as it’s mild & dry. I have zero desire to walk in the freezing cold or rain. That’s completely miserable & pointless.

Walking & weight lifting are my main form if exercise. I used to run but my pelvic floor says no after 2 kids 😂 we have a treadmill in the garage & I power walk on that for 45 minutes most days or a bit less if I’m lifting as well. Now it’s getting nicer weather, I’ll switch to outdoor walks sometimes!

WellTidy · 14/04/2022 20:03

I live walking. But not walking boots type walking, more trainers type walking. I listen to podcasts as I walk, and the time goes ever so quickly. Strada tells me that I walk at 3.75 mph, so I aim to walk for an hour’s podcast to a coffee shop and then an hour home = nearly 8 miles done without even thinking about it.

Suzi888 · 14/04/2022 20:04

I love a walk, I couldn’t sit around reading all day long. I love to read as well but not all day. It’s good to move around!

Benjispruce4 · 14/04/2022 20:04

The best thing I ever did was buy walking boots. They make every walk doable, no trying to dodge mud and puddles, they’re like an off-road vehicle for my feet!

Lollypip · 14/04/2022 20:04

Exercise. Its good for your mental health as well as your body, as breathing fresh air etc combats some of the toxins you breathe in all day in your home. I don't get people who don't go out walks? I'm very slim and have 3 fit and healthy kids, people are always asking what my trick is? Eh, walking 😂?!

Nocutenamesleft · 14/04/2022 20:06

My mum says the same for running and thinks I’m nuts because I’m training towards long distance running

I love it though! I love pushing myself through.

JustJam4Tea · 14/04/2022 20:07

We have a dog, I love walking, but a walk with a dog is 100x better. We llive near beaches, glens, hills….walk 10 minutes from house and I’m on a beach.

But even when I didn’t I still loved a walk, clearsthe head, I feel weird if I don’t get out the house in the day for a walk.

HangingOver · 14/04/2022 20:07

I do tonnes of exercise and I loathe walking unless I've got someone to chat to. Walking alone bores the pants off me.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 14/04/2022 20:10

I used to walk half an hour to and from work each day. Then 45 mins to meet DH from work, then to and from the station...so much walking.
I think this was my "mindfulness" workout before it was invented. Grin

Then I started driving. 2 hours a day...slightly different "mindfulness" in that you had to pay some attention to the road. Blush

Now I don't drive very far and live somewhere with some "cycle/footpaths" but too many cyclists and dog walkers, and I absolutely hate the place.
Unless we drive somewhere nice, I don't walk unless I'm pushing a trolley around Sainsburys or B&Q. 🤷‍♀️

Mulhollandmagoo · 14/04/2022 20:11

I love a walk, but not when it's raining, or when it's too hot....or too cold!

Maybe I'm not actually a fan 🤣

NormaSnorks · 14/04/2022 20:12

I always liked hiking, but never really went 'for a walk' from my house for example. Covid changed all that and now I LOVE going for a walk. I'm lucky that it's leafy and green near where I live and I have a few different routes - 20/30/40/50 minutes. I love seeing things change in the neighbourhood and most times I bump into someone I know and have a bit of a chat, so it meets a social need for me. I usually listen to an audiobook or podcast. Never fails to lift my spirits and help me sleep well!

Stroopwaffle5000 · 14/04/2022 20:13

I take my dog for a walk everyday, but hate walking, and have to listen to an audio book or else I get bored. I do like to track my steps though, which encourages me to walk further and for longer.

Dagnabit · 14/04/2022 20:17

I do enjoy a nice walk. I also enjoy reading a good book. Just do what you like!

Mckmck · 14/04/2022 20:17

I agree with you. Don't see the point unless you actually need to get somewhere

FangsForTheMemory · 14/04/2022 20:18

exercise and headspace
