Shameless plea - people.were so helpful on my last thread. Me and ds (aged 10) for 2 nights.

Arrive Sunday at 12pm. Staying in a Premier Inn hub (check in 3pm whixh is a bit shit)

Booked into Camera Obscura at 12.15 on Monday

Maybe open top bus tour

Can you recommend places to eat (will I need to book?)

We could add another night somewhere accessible by train if anywhere springs to mind?

We were meantvto with doing 3 nights with pals.elsewhere in Scotland but they have covid and ds is really gutted so lookingvto make it really fun

Does he like funfairs? There's a big one starting in Kirkcaldy today which is less than an hour on the train from Edinburgh. The last day for it is Easter Monday though so you'd probably have to catch a train through after you've done the Camera Obscura and then get a later one back to Edinburgh.

AffIt · 13/04/2022 14:55

Dynamic Earth (at the bottom of the Royal Mile) is great fun and you could do it after the Camera Obscura, with a nice walk down the Mile.

I think your son is probably a bit young for the Castle and/or Holyrood Palace, both of which are great, but unless your boy is massively into history, probably a bit of an expensive time-suck.

Feeding the squirrels in Princes St Gardens is always fun and you could go up the Scott Monument if you're both able-bodied and not scared of heights?

I used to live in Stockbridge and like to bobble around there and Dean Village, but again, probably a bit yawnsome for a wee boy.

Re: food - what do you like? Sunday/Mondays you'll probably be okay for walk-ins, but we do still have mask protocols in place in Scotland, so don't forget those.

Also - if the weather is nice, you could go out to Portobello Sands?

islandtime · 13/04/2022 15:07

We are here now, just about to do the Harry Potter walking tour which lots of people have recommended - will let you know how it goes! We also did the ghost bus tour which was fun although the hop on hop off tours might be better value. My children (13 and 9) have enjoyed the shops in the old town - lots of places to buy Harry Potter merch, crystals, Marvel comics and science fiction stuff! We also had a visit to the museum of Scotland which is free. We have eaten in dishoom, a Mexican place called cartel and and mamas pizza place on the grassmarket, all good so far. So much choice and we haven’t needed to book anything yet but maybe have just been lucky.

We are off to the theatre tonight to see the magic goes wrong show and planning to visit one of the many ice cream places before we leave.

We aren’t doing it this time but a walk up Arthur’s Seat is well worth it for the amazing views.

The Edinburgh dungeons (just behind the train station) are great fun and Hard Rock Cafe is always a fun place to eat.

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 13/04/2022 20:38

Train to Stirling? The castle is an easy (albeit uphill!) walk & my 10yr olds love to sit on a cannon.
Edinburgh science festival is ongoing next week & has various things that might appeal. (Augmented reality art thing at the botanics & all sorts at the museum of Scotland come to mind)

Paperyfish · 13/04/2022 20:43

We had a week in Edinburgh last week. My 9 and 7 yo loved the chocolatarium tour. You get to do tastings and make your own chocolate bar. Was just off prices st. They also loved the museum of Scotland, the boat tour from the forth bridge and the camera obscura.

Links Market? We were actually meant to be going with our (now covid ridden) Scottish pals. Weve been before and loved it - ds has poopood it though as he'd feel bad for his friend!

We did a ghost tour, it wasn’t very spooky but it was very funny and interesting! The dungeons were a laugh as well.

Wbeezer · 13/04/2022 20:49

Is the Museum of childhood still on the Royal Mile? Mine used to enjoy that.

Thursa · 13/04/2022 20:50

Mary Kings Close. We also signed up in there for an evening history walk.

A bus tour, there are different ones to chose from.

The zoo

Princes street gardens

Dynamic Earth

FelicityPike · 13/04/2022 20:53

Don’t waste your time on Dynamic Earth.

Fleur405 · 13/04/2022 20:56

Glasgow is only 40 minutes on the train and Glasgow Science Centre is really good with lots of interactive things to do. There was also some good interactive stuff at the National Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh) last time I was there so if the science fair is on I think that could be good.

HowFascinating · 13/04/2022 21:03

My DSs have done many repeat visits to Our Dynamic Earth over the years. They love it- and the Camera Obscura. The zoo is fab if the weather is fine.

Good Edinburgh stuff:

Zoo - easy bus trip from city centre. But cheap but fills a day. 10 is a great age for it.

Dynamic earth - kids went with school, bit worthy, never seemed like much cop but some folks like it
Museum on the mound (money museum) - think it's free in and interesting for a 10yo.

Castle and Holyrood - expensive and not really worth it for 10yo

Camera Obscura is great - it'll take ages to get around with all the stuff. Go for a walk up onto the esplanade, and then down the royal mile having a look at the closes then to the museum of childhood. Pizza in civerinos in Hunter square in the middle.

Free stuff
National museum - always good, try to see the clock on the hour and play in the science exhibits. The Scottish galleries are good, as are the stuff about space and animals - perfect for a 10yo

Portobello beach - I just like it, probably not that exciting if you're from somewhere with a good beach, but it's good for a walk along.

Calton hill - not as high or as busy as Arthur's seat but good views, a decent walk and you can play on the Athens of the North, as long as you're careful ( there's quite often music and general partying up there over nice weather/long weekends). Lunch afterwards in valvona and crolla on elm row.

All the Harry potter stuff - worth a look if it's your bag.

Walk down the water of Leith to the port and have lunch in the king's wark or Victor Hugo (although a 10yo might prefer Mimi's bakehouse), then get the 16 bus back into town.

You'll need to plan carefully and CHECK the tides, but cramond Island is a good trip. Bus 41 from city centre, take a lunch or walk out and back before having lunch in one of the cafes. It's only accessible at low tide and it's easy to get caught out so check before you go.

Not Edinburgh
Glasgow - science centre or transport museum are both awesome.
Stirling castle is ace but I don't see why you'd bother if you've discounted Edinburgh castle.
Wallace monument is cool and has good walk up and around it - there's a bus that works well for it.
Deep sea world in North Queensferry is good if they're still obsessed with sea life (I fucking hated octonaughts)
Dundee is a great day trip by train - good museum, lots of oor Willie/Beano /DC Thomson stuff and a really good Lebanese restaurant I can't remember the name of - starts with T. And you can walk up to the top of the hill behind the city if you're feeling enthused.
North Berwick - good day out from Edinburgh. Take the train or the bus. Good beaches, nice walks, you could try direlton or tantallon castles (tantallon is an arse ache by public transport). Sea bird centre in NB is surprisingly good. You can walk up Berwick law and see the jaw bones. All great for 10yo.

islandtime · 13/04/2022 22:49

It was really interesting, just over an hour and took in some new sights around the old town. I learnt a lot and the kids got to show off their HP knowledge. It’s free - you pay what you think it is worth, most people seemed to pay £5-£10 pp

Thursa · 13/04/2022 22:52

What are those city pass cards again? I remember using them in Paris, you buy ahead and get free/discounted entrance to places…I think it was just called Paris Pass. Do they do one for Edinburgh?

deste · 13/04/2022 22:55

We did the zoo last Monday. It wasn't cheap and it was awful. The place is shabby, weeds growing everywhere and some animals not available. It needs a complete overhaul, I dread to think what impression foreign visitors have.

CatSpeakForDummies · 13/04/2022 23:02

The Edinburgh Science Festival is on just now and has loads of kids stuff. Whether to go elsewhere would depend on the kind of things that you and DS like to do - mountain biking in Peebles is only 45 minutes away, for example.

Guineapiggiesmalls · 13/04/2022 23:08

Van Gogh Live? You might be able to get tickets, it’s v good
