Is George Foreman grill good for this? My kids decided it's their favorite

Non stick pan, butter the outsides.
That's what we do.

Are the toasting bags a pain to clean?

Hitplay · 11/04/2022 20:47

@mrburrsir

You can put cheese in between two bits of toast wrap in kitchen roll and microwave for a minute or two. Works quite well but not as nice as proper grilled cheese toaster
Who hurt you?

Honestly, I don't use any toasty appliances anymore. They squish the bread down in a way I don't like.
Anyway, it's so easy - generous knob of butter straight into small/medium frying pan and melt on low/medium heat. Assemble the sandwich and place straight onto melted butter in pan, it'll soak straight into the bread. Cover with a lid and toast on low for a few minutes. Use fish slice to lift, another knob of butter in and melt, then flip the sandwich and repeat. Golden brown, buttery and perfectly melted and gooey and no squished pancake thin bread.
I could happily eat brie/cheese/chutney/tomato toasties for dinner most nights. Simple and so satisfying.

This. By far the best way.

Easy to clean: hot water and washing up liquid or put them in the dishwasher over the plate rack thingy.

What are paninis like using the frying pan method?

HardStareBear · 12/04/2022 20:06

Breville panini press. It does halloumi brilliantly too. Ours is used almost daily.

I use a frying pan or a long griddle pan, depending how many I need to make, I also gave up buttering the outsides, it's too faffy ! Get the pan nice and warm, throw a good dod of butter into the pan and set the sandwich right on top before it's run all over the pan. New butter for the second side!

Frying pan, butter on the outsides. The teens use those toaster bag things when they can’t be arsed to wash a pan.

Heathofhares · 13/04/2022 07:52

I use a cast iron chargrill pan and use a side plate on top to squash it down. I don’t butter them or heat the filing first.

Mangogogogo · 13/04/2022 12:18

I used to ram a sandwich into the toaster. The best way! Then it leaked and the toaster set on fire and tripped the entire house so now I do them in a hot pan.. nowhere near as nice! After reading this thread I’m gunna try my air fryer!

Mangogogogo · 13/04/2022 12:20

Oh and I have a toastie maker!! However I reserve that for specific ciabatta style toasties.. normal bread (gluten free for me so maybe that changes things) just doesn’t fair as well In there getting all squished down
