Reversed car I was due to sell today into a lamppost....

...and I'm still so sad about it. Please make me feel better with your words/wtf car stories.

Picked up a new car today (yay)!

Garage interested in my old car, a 07 Yaris, agreed 1500.

I reversed into a lampost(that came out of nowhere, honest!) OUTSIDE THE GARAGE.

When mechanic was finally able to get me to talk, he agreed to give me 1k and off I went.

I can't believe it, still sitting on the couch beating myself up.

Please help me feel better with your stories.

me with 15month old and 7mo pregnant. All our world goods stuck in removal lorry as our Friday exchange and complete move did not exchanger and complete as our buyers money didn't come through, so DH, DS and I literally only had clothes we were in for the weekend.

Turned up early to Asda, to buy nappies and essential bits. First into the empty multi storey car park, pick of spaces in teeny Fiat Punto and DH drive smack into a floor to ceiling column.

Few years later, note parents to 3 under 3.5 and proper skint, on debt management plan.

At our local National Trust DH again inexplicably drove into a parked car. People saw, we both had meltdown about how we couldn't afford to fix it but we couldn't just drive off. Left details. Owners never followed it up. I think they maybe saw the state we were in and heard our convo (and tears) and just felt sorry

Backing into a lamp post makes an impressive dent and I've done that.

The mechanic giving you £1k sounds about right. When I backed my car into a client's and crushed the back bumper, that cost £500 to replace. The funny thing was that the dent in her car was about the size of a wok and my car had a couple of tiny scratches with some of her car's paint on them.

Don't worry about it OP, we all mess up here and there but it does shake you up at the time.

Due to part exchange on a new car a couple of years ago. DH used my car to attend a football match and was rear ended on the motorway. Had to pay £2500 to continue with part ex because of the damage and then spent the next 12 months arguing through insurance about who was at fault, injuries of the four people in my car and how much damage had been caused. Never did get that pay out.. 😩

Pumpkinstace · 10/04/2022 16:35

An old colleague of mine passed her driving test and bought a brand new car. She had to wait about 6 weeks for it to be delivered and she was so excited.

When the day finally came she booked it off work.

They dropped it while taking it off the back of the delivery truck and she had to wait another 8 weeks for the replacement.

About 20 years ago my DH treated himself to an old, but beautiful long wheel base Jaguar XJ8, stunning car in racing green. Did I mention it was a long wheel base? Our drive had a very narrow entrance that bent round sharply, with a low curved wall. On his first journey back home, after buying it, he misjudged the angle coming in and scraped it from front wing to back on the passenger side. It cost GBP11K and he spent about GBP3k fixing it. Three months later the gearbox went. He loved that car Grin

DH had new car delivered and first journey was to my place. He got less than half a mile from home before it was rear ended by a lorry on Wandsworth one-way system. DF got her first car and drove rather too enthusiastically through an amber (red) light and crashed into another car. Luckily everyone was okay. I'm sorry OP, it's rubbish, but these things do tend to get a bit less painful in time!

sophienelisse · 10/04/2022 16:47

Once when I was camping a young driver got stuck in a divet in the field we were in. She kept revving and revving. We told her not to. And to wait for the help that was on its way.

She put some wood under the wheels and kept reviving and then it caught fire!

It went fully up but didn't explode like in the movies. Just burnt out. Fire brigade arrived just as it was burning out.

She said she'd only just picked it up.

Redglitter · 10/04/2022 16:54

I bought a Honda Civic many moons ago. The day I went to pick it up a salesman reversed into the passengers side. Didn't get it for another week while they repaired it.

Had it parked at work. Parking at work was a number of bays where you parked nose to kerb, or on the other side of the road you parked parallel. I was parked parallel one night shift when one of the late shift tracked me down to say she'd reversed out a space and into the side of my car - again passenger side.

About 8 months later I was back shift & one of the early shift came in to tell me they'd, yes you guessed it, reversed into the side of my car

I got rid of it shortly after

One of my colleagues reversed into my car, carried on driving, gouged the and then managed to rip the front bumper off extracting herself from the situation. Her car didn’t fare much better.

About 20 people watched her do it on cctv.

It was her first day back from maternity leave.

I felt so sorry for her!!

Hellocatshome · 10/04/2022 16:57

DH managed to crash into the side of our house while parking the car and trying to avoid squashing a ladybird that had landed on the steering wheel.

Bigoldmachine · 10/04/2022 17:00

First day at new job I was late because while parking I reversed into a parked car. It was a horrible feeling. Left details and the owner was lovely about it, just sorted it all through the insurance but that initial moment and starting my new job in that mood was not very nice!!

Blossomtoes · 10/04/2022 17:00

I misjudged a parking space and drove into a colleague’s car. She was so nice about it when I went and told her. It’s happened to most of us at some time @Dramallamaalpaca.

Kite22 · 10/04/2022 17:01

Fair play to the garage - still giving you £1000 was very generous of them.

My poor ds's friend was driving home from buying his first ever car, went to turn right into a side road when almost home, and some pratt inexplicably decided to 'overtake' him as he was turning and drove straight into the side of him. Luckily for him there was a police officer on the pavement who saw the whole thing and there was no question about blame or fault, but he was devastated, having saved up for his first car, as you can imagine.

Fridafever · 10/04/2022 17:05

When I was 18 I reversed my dad’s car into my mum’s car. That was fun telling them!

Iamnotamermaid · 10/04/2022 17:36

I had a friend who had just got a new Audi 4x4 but an automatic. Was trying to leave for work but accidentally put the car in reverse instead of drive and rammed it into the side of the house Grin

Oh no 😄🙈!
Angrymum22 · 10/04/2022 18:08

DH reversed into a bollard while parking brand new car. He claimed the parking sensors didn’t work and he didn’t see it on the camera. I got the blame because I insisted he move it because he’d taken up two parking bays.
Then he ran over a rabbit which took out a front fog light, it got attacked by peacocks ( left scratches on all four corners) and recently a large white transit van took out the drivers side wing mirror. It’s not been a lucky car for us, but is so nice to drive.
I am retiring in 2yrs so will keep it until then before we part x it for another one.
Just changed my car so DS can use the new one, he is learning to drive. My nerves were in tatters last week while he drove the old one in case it suffered any damage. Fortunately it made it to the hand over unscathed.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 10/04/2022 18:16

Had our old car for 8 years with no mishaps. 2 days before were due to part-ex it, someone let their car door smash into the side of ours in a car park!

My MIL went to park FILs car in their garage, she accidentally tapped the accelerator instead of the brake and ended up in their NDNs garden 😬

Michellebops · 10/04/2022 18:17

I got a brand new car many moons ago and proudly drove it around, it was a new shape and so shiny.
I went to visit a friend and reversed into a sheltered parking bay. I totally misjudged and hit a pole and smashed my rear light. Had to sellotape it together like a jigsaw as was due to drive 400 miles the next day.
Turned out that the car was so new parts weren't available for replacement and had to be ordered from manufacturers,

4 months I waited with my sellotaped lights 🙈

Justanotherobserver · 10/04/2022 18:21

Hey, there's nothing with sellotaped lights! I drove around for years with a back light held together with tape Grin

I got £500 more part ex on my old car when I bought my last one. Happy days!
6 days later, we had a wicked hoar frost overnight and I lost control on some black ice and kerbed the car. Bent the wheel and had to spend the £500 I had saved fixing my new (to me, but only 3 years old) car.

Beachsidesunset · 10/04/2022 18:26

I hired a transit van to move house, very last minute and rushed. I left my GSD in the cab for ten minutes whilst I went back in to go to the loo and when I came back out she'd caused £1000 worth of damage (chewed the steering wheel, both seat belts, upholstery and handbrake) 😲

I first interpreted GSD as “grand step daughter”. But is it “German shepherd dog”? Or similar?
Beachsidesunset · 10/04/2022 20:52

Grin Yes, German Shepherd Dog!
