Someone was in our house last night.

Am so worried and confused about what happened.
1am- DH and I go upto bed, dd1 has popped out to pick up her boyfriend from the pub and bring him back here and dd2 has just arrived home from work. Younger dc have been asleep for hours.
5am- I hear a phone vibrating in the house and what sounds like an alarm, dh puts his ears to the older dc's doors but thinks it's coming from downstairs. Goes down past the (closed?) front door and locates the phone down the back of the couch. Knocks on oldest dd's door and throws the phone to her sleeping boyfriend saying he'd left it downstairs.
8am dd2 goes downstairs for a drink and the front door is wide open. I hear her coming up to check on the little two who are still asleep in bed.
At this point I start getting concerned so go into dd1s room and her boyfriend says the phone isn't his! He thought dh had got confused about who he was giving it to at 5am so just put it under the bed and went back to sleep.
Dh insists the door was closed when he walked past it at 5am (Yale lock no handle so when it's not clicked closed it swings wide open so I believe it was closed)
Back door is locked with the key in the door and the conservatory has an added locking system over the original lock that hasn't been moved.
We live in a nice area, we are on the edge of town with fields all around so you wouldn't walk past our house going anywhere else iyswim, you'd have to be deliberately coming this way.
We rent our house (moved in 18 months ago) so we don't know who all had keys before us which stupidly never crossed my mind until this morning 😕
Nothing seems to have been touched, my bag is over the end of the stairs, the cars and keys are all there and no laptops etc are missing.
I've no idea why anyone would have come in, lost their phone on the couch then left again without us hearing anything.
I'm worried that the person must have still been in the house when dh went downstairs then left the door open when he went out.
The only other thing to add is one night a few weeks ago dd2 came in at 1am then I went out at 5am and the door was wide open. I told her to be more careful when she came in and she insisted that she had closed the door properly but now I'm wondering if someone has done this before.
We've phoned the police who are coming out at some point to talk to us and pick up the phone (phones locked with a gaming picture on the Lock Screen) and will be going to B&Q to get new locks but I feel so on edge wondering what's been going on 😔

What a lot of ridiculous suggestions 😂😂😂. Your DD2 left the door open the other night so why on earth would you think there was some other different reason.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 10/04/2022 22:28

You spoke to your DD2 OUT THE WINDOW at 1am when your neighbours are mostly young families and retired people. Why do you think this is appropriate? Voices carry at night. So inconsiderate.

lms2017 · 10/04/2022 22:35

Is the Bf a drug dealer with a 2nd phone doing deals from your house (extreme I know ) but everyone loves a theory !! X

TracyMosby · 10/04/2022 22:38

This would worry me too.

MummyofTw0 · 10/04/2022 22:40

So spooky

Ilostit · 10/04/2022 22:47

I feel like your house has a really strange set up that I can’t get my head round

Sarah13xx · 10/04/2022 22:55

Hmm I don’t know but I’m invested in this. Really loving this really chilled set up of family members going in and out each other’s rooms in the middle of the night 😂 the drug dealing this is very much a possibility. It depends how it came about that he handed it back as a conversation might have already taken place between him and your daughter so he’s been back into a corner to say it wasn’t his. It does seem a more likely story than a stranger coming into your house and hiding a phone there 🤔 if you keep a hold of the phone you might see messages pop up that you can see even when locked?

Lotsalotsagiggles · 10/04/2022 22:58

Surely police can see who phone is registered to?

HidingUnderARock · 10/04/2022 22:59

Someone in your house has a 2nd phone and their partner doesn't know about it.
Sounds like it's either DD1 or her bf.

Same with the one that turned up 5 years later on the lounge floor, seriously.

Davethecat2001 · 10/04/2022 23:00

Cool story bro

WhackingPhoenix · 10/04/2022 23:11

The poor BF being labelled a drug dealer 😂 MN putting two and two together and coming up with five yet again!

MurielSpriggs · 10/04/2022 23:17

@MadMadMadamMim

I can't get over the fact your DH thought it was acceptable to knock your DD and bf up at 5am and throw a phone at them.

Wtf? They'd only been in for 3 hours. Why on earth would you wake them for this?

Totally agree, has DH explained this? Has he been behaving strangely recently in any way?
UrsulaBursula · 10/04/2022 23:26

Your DD2 is having someone sleep over without your knowledge.

Ichangedmynameonce · 10/04/2022 23:28

Following

marihen1 · 10/04/2022 23:29

That is unsettling! Have you changed the locks now?

safclass · 10/04/2022 23:36

Totally agree!
Never mind 'why did dh feel it was ok to do this!' crap!
If someone is inconsiderate enough to leave a phone alarm ringing which wakes me, and ithen I have to get up, find it and switch it off, then YES, they are going to be woken up and have it tossed to them. I know it was mistaken identity but they wouldn't know that until they were woken up!
Our ds set his alarm by accident one Sunday morning. 6.30. woke me , dh and the dog who refused to go back to sleep, so I went and woke ds, who had slept through the alarm , and made him get up as well!!

Catlady2021 · 10/04/2022 23:38

You wouldn’t need to muck about with the sim card. Surely you could just phone your number from the phone, assuming it’s not passcode protected.
If it is passcode protected, it won’t take long for someone to ring the phone- probably the person who it belongs to.
The police could take the phone and find out who that belongs to pretty much instantly anyway.

Very strange a random phone has been found but I’m sure there’s a rationale explanation.

expat101 · 11/04/2022 00:07

Your key to it all is the mobile, just keep checking in with the police they are actually doing something with it.

searchingforsomethiing · 11/04/2022 00:20

So weird

Whatsthepoint4 · 11/04/2022 00:22

Bloody hell OP! That's terrifying. Hope you get to the bottom of it! Please keep us updated! Whatever the outcome!

Beeinalily · 11/04/2022 00:33

@DoorWasAJar I'm so sorry, that's appalling 💐

LauraNicolaides · 11/04/2022 00:36

Unfortunately I do not think that the police will have set up an incident room and have a team of their finest detectives on this particular crime investigation Grin
greenlynx · 11/04/2022 00:37

I suspect that @Threeboysandadog is right and your DH has interrupted an intruder. Maybe that’s why police came so promptly - they knew about similar cases.
Hope it’s wrong and there is a simple explanation. However I would change locks and enhance security anyway.

LoisLane66 · 11/04/2022 01:06

Two things. Never leave a key in any lock (you said back door key is left there) Police will tell you the same thing. Don't leave car keys, any keys, laptops or handbags in places where they can be seen through a window or near the front door.
I keep my purse/wallet, keys and mobile in a drawer next to my bed and never downstairs when I'm upstairs. Better safe than sorry. You sound like a busy household so you'd have to make sure that AC and b/fs are really aware of the need for security, especially when coming in late.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 11/04/2022 01:15

@MoiraNotRuby

Have you got any secret rooms under your house a la Parasite?

I reckon its something to do with landlord or previous tenants.

We don't talk about Bruno. Reckon it's him.
