Opinions on this ring?

So 3 years ago, my lovely partner proposed to me with a beautiful pear shaped cluster ring. As below 😊

I absolutely adore it, but have just had weight loss surgery and am loosing weight rapidly on my fingers. I've been to several jewellers, who have advised that they could only take it down In size, by two sizes.. due to the diamond shoulders. Anything more than this will seriously loosen the diamonds settings causing loose and wobbly diamonds.

SO.. DP asked if I would ever consider a new ring. And we have both seen the lovely pre-owned Art Deco style one below.

We want to keep it on the down-low for now until we decide if we would like to go ahead with it or not.. so I haven't sent it to anybody 'in real life' 😂

So I wondered if I could get opinions?

Here are the rings!

Love the Art Deco one. Have two 😊

notsuresal · 10/04/2022 07:05

@whenwillthemadnessend thank you! It is so different to anything I've ever looked at before. And I just feel there's something really nice about it being pre-loved. Giving it a second life! 🙈❤️

Ask 100 people if they like a ring and you will get 100 different responses.

Do you like it? Is it comfy to wear? Does it suit you? If yes, yes, yes then go ahead and get it.

The only thing a bit unclear is do you have to sell your existing ring to get it? How does that make you feel? - if you are fine. Then great. If you don't want to lose the original- consider having the stones reset.
If you are lucky enough to be able to afford rhe second ring anyway- then no issues.

notsuresal · 10/04/2022 07:11

Sorry I didn't mention that.
I would be keeping my existing ring and wearing it on the other finger.

I personally don't like the Art Deco one (prefer simple designs, solitaires etc), but it's all a matter of taste and it only matters whether you like it.

Do you need to sell your original ring to buy it? If that's the case I personally would wait until you've lost as much weight as you're going to and have the stones/metal from your original ring used to make a new one. I presume with surgery it's more likely you'll keep the weight off l?

Mumdiva99 · 10/04/2022 07:13

I have bought a preloved ring. I love it. And actually my engagement diamond comes from my late mil - which makes it all the more special to me. Enjoy your new ring (when you get it).

knittingaddict · 10/04/2022 07:13

I love art deco jewellery and the ring is beautiful.

NatMoz · 10/04/2022 07:19

I like art deco but I'm not a fan of that ring. I'm in the process of getting a ring made by Heidi Gibson (check instragram) who I think makes fantastic art deco style ballerina rings. Depends on budget and what you like I suppose.

I really like the pear too

notsuresal · 10/04/2022 07:52

Here's a picture of it on!

Both are lovely!
My engagement ring needed re sized to a much smaller size. The stones became loose but they were reset and the claws adjusted to suit. Just an option that it can be done- just some jewellers don’t want to do it for some reason!

Hotpinkangel19 · 10/04/2022 07:57

Sorry, I don't think it looks right on you. Your original one is nice. I'd try and re size.

girlmom21 · 10/04/2022 07:59

I don't like it - it looks too big and blocky on your finger.

The original looks lovely on you! It's a shame they adjust that. Couldn't you get another the same?

knittingaddict · 10/04/2022 08:00

I much prefer the art deco ring, but that the problem with opinions. They are all different.

CamsPaisleyCuffs · 10/04/2022 08:02

Love the art deco style, but if you are still losing weight rapidly is this new ring going to be suitable for adjustment? If I were you I find a "faux" ring to wear whilst I was losing the weight and then get the replacement when your weight has settled. You'd be gutted if it just slipped off one day without you noticing.

twointhemorning · 10/04/2022 08:03

I like the art deco ring, but to me it looks like a cocktail ring rather than an engagement ring (but then I do have a solitaire myself). Have you tried it with a wedding ring?

Roselilly36 · 10/04/2022 08:06

Both beautiful OP, enjoy.

RandomQuest · 10/04/2022 08:07

You could absolutely get your original one resized if you wanted to. It’s just more work, and likely more money. I had similar with my engagement ring and had the band completely remade so it was essentially a new ring but done in the exact same style as the original and reusing the original stones of course. I would seek out another jeweller if that’s still the route you want to go down. Of course if you want justification for a new ring that’s fine too… and since you’ve asked I’m not personally a fan of the Art Deco one, and I usually love Art Deco. It’s just a bit too square and chunky for me. But if you love it then that’s all that matters!

Anonmousse · 10/04/2022 08:07

I prefer your original ring, I'm glad you're going to keep it. How many sizes does it need to go down to fit securely?

TheVolturi · 10/04/2022 08:09

I love love love the second one!

Travellingraspberry · 10/04/2022 08:12

I think they're both beautiful! What sort of wedding band would you have though? They both look difficult shapes to have another ring set right next to them x

Dishh · 10/04/2022 08:22

I lost quite a bit of weight a few years ago and struck this issue. I'd wait until your weight settles before doing anything about your rings, particularly anything expensive. You'd likely strike the same problem with the Art Deco ring in a few months anyway. In your situation, I'd have a new ring made out of the pear ring, designed by the both of you.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 10/04/2022 08:29

I have exactly the same issue following weight loss surgery. My engagement ring cannot be reduced in size so I will have to have the ring completely rebuilt. However I'm not at goal and my jeweller won't do the work until I am as if my fingers get even smaller they will have to redo the work.

I love the art deco ring (but mainly because I really don't like pear shaped diamonds) so would definitely get it but could it be reduced in the future if needed?

Sunnysidegold · 10/04/2022 08:32

I love the art deco ring but think the pear looks nicer on you. Consider getting it remade instead?
