Having avoided covid for the full 2 years of the pandemic 15 year old DS has tested positive on LFT 8 days before we fly to Greece. I just want to cry. We are going with all of DH extended family so it’s not something that can be rebooked with different dates. I just want to cry. I bloody knew this would happen.

@Mif4

Children 3+ wearing a mask all day only removing if they eat?? That's abusive
Sadly it’s the rules here. Outside of schools and workplaces there are no actual mask mandates but everyone wears them anyway. Even out in parks and playgrounds. It’s a bit loopy for sure since transmission is very unlikely outside in fresh air.
rookiemere · 09/04/2022 13:45

I think the sticking point is DS2 needing to have a PCR.
How far in advance of the flight does it need to be done?
i would check with your insurance what the process is if he does test positive so at least you'll get your money back if that happens.
@Fadeout83

Where I live kids have to wear a mask to school all day unless eating (3 years old and up)

Where we live this was thankfully never mandated. Masking young children is a line I'm glad we never crossed.
Agree. Masking young children is so damaging, especially in terms of language and speech development. Utterly unnecessary considering how lightly it affects the majority of kids.

astoundedgoat · 09/04/2022 21:28

@BrieAndChilli - your 11 year old doesn’t need a PCR for Greece - just a lateral flow. And, well, how dig you deep is entirely up to you.

Keep him as isolated as you can is the best thing. My son tested positive 2 weeks ago, it took 5 days from his test for me and his dad to test positive, and 8 days from his test for his brother to test positive and he was unwell for a day with a really high temperature, luckily only lasted for one day. So I would try and keep him isolated if you can for the next week, it sounds mean but I don't know how else you wouldn't all catch it eventually.
Good luck!

Fadeout83 · 10/04/2022 03:01

@NameChChChChanges1 at the risk of straying from the topic that’s actually not true. There is no evidence mask wearing inhibits speech and development with young children.

I should qualify all my posts by saying I don’t agree with mask mandates for young children. Unfortunately it’s the rules where I live for the time being. If either of my kids got Covid, Id keep them away from each other and mask them and us for a couple of days that they’re symptomatic. But I hate sending my 4 year old to school with a mask and can’t wait for it to end. We don’t mask our kids when our and about.

Only posting this as benefits of masks far outweigh the risks.

OP how is DS going? How’s the rest of the family

Bergmum · 10/04/2022 03:44

Those articles are about the adult caregivers wearing masks. They don't discuss the children wearing masks.

They do actually. One of the studies specifically looked at children wearing masks.

Regardless I will concede that we simply don’t know enough yet. These are all firsts and a lot is unknown.

UPDATE: I tested positive this morning after waking up with a little bit of a sore throat. DS is already feeling loads better.
Still holding a tiny bit of hope that no-one else gets it and we both test negative later in the week.

Oh hope you get over it quickly

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/04/2022 16:59

Oh heck. Keeping everything crossed for you all 🤞🏻

BrieAndChilli · 17/04/2022 22:44

Quick update.
DS was testing negative by the time we flew. No-one else got it and DS2 tested negative for his preflight test. I was still positive but past the 5 days recommended isolation and line was fainter than earlier in the week. I also no longer had any symptoms so we did fly.
No-one at the airport even asked us if we were vaccinated nor asked for any proof of negative test!
