Having avoided covid for the full 2 years of the pandemic 15 year old DS has tested positive on LFT 8 days before we fly to Greece. I just want to cry. We are going with all of DH extended family so it’s not something that can be rebooked with different dates. I just want to cry. I bloody knew this would happen.

If he's testing negative he's fine to go on a plane. If he's not you'll have to decide how you feel.

No guarantee you'll all get it though, I've just had it for the first time, caught off my child who had it for the second time. DP still hasn't had it. We're not isolating, house is too small. He just doesn't tend to get respiratory illnesses, lucky thing.

Candleabra · 09/04/2022 07:19

You might be ok. I tested negative after 7 days and was really ill. No one else in the family caught it.

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 07:19

Do you have covid cancellation insurance? Or did they stop doing that?

WonderingWanda · 09/04/2022 07:31

Given that the rules are now that teenagers can go back to school after 3 days it's not surprising that he's caught it. That said, most teens don't test positive for very long. The only people who tested positive for longer have been much older. Just try to do a good job of isolating him to protect the rest of you until he tests negative. I am sure you will be fine to go and do not worry about taking him on a plane day 9, everyone is being exposed to covid all over the place, so just worry about the specific requirements for entry to Greece. Good luck!

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 07:32

I'd also worry about if he'd feel well enough to go. I day 5 wasn't great I'm all better for me..

JessicaBrassica · 09/04/2022 07:36

DD and DH both tested positive 5 days before I flew out on a work trip overseas. They isolated and tested -ve the day I left and I didn't catch it. I didn't actually believe I was going to go until I stepped on the plane though.

Wnkingawalrus · 09/04/2022 07:45

At least you weren't in Greece already and stuck

I don’t think you have to test to travel to the UK now so now need to get stuck anywhere!

Flyonawalk · 09/04/2022 07:52

He’s fine to go on holiday, surely, especially vaccinated.

Potentialscroogeincognito · 09/04/2022 07:57

There is no “test to release” anymore unless you work in a hospital or care hope and need to go to work.

The guidance is not to test a child or young person under the age of 18 unless advised by a healthcare professional, then the isolation period is 3 days.

Everyone else is try and stay at home for 5 days and treat as a respiratory infection.

Here is the link: www.gov.uk/guidance/people-with-symptoms-of-a-respiratory-infection-including-covid-19

Fadeout83 · 09/04/2022 07:59

Why is everyone jumping on the poster who made her 5 year old wear a mask and isolate? Where I live kids have to wear a mask to school all day unless eating (3 years old and up) and I’m yet to see an unmasked person or child out and about strolling etc.

I personally didn’t read the post as poster neglecting a child, which many here seem to have done. Not necessarily what I or many would choose to do but it’s completely normal in a lot of households. A friends 6 year is currently positive and wears a mask if in a room with others. Other members of family wearing masks too

NCforweddingQ · 09/04/2022 07:59

We didn't catch it off our 3 year old. No isolation obviously (at home). You might be fine.

Fadeout83 · 09/04/2022 08:00

For relevance, OP shitty timing but you may well not test positive and DC will surely recover by fly
Time? What are the fly rules and rules in Greece at the moment?

astoundedgoat · 09/04/2022 08:01

You know already that the infectiousness drops significantly 3 - 5 days after symptoms start, and vanishingly few people are infectious after 7 - 9 days. You know that none of you has to take a test here in the U.K. any more, and you know that there is no testing for vaccinated people to enter Greece.

There is nothing to stop you going on your holiday unless you all feel dreadful on the day of travel.

Your son is old enough to isolate in the house now and there is no reason for anybody to take any further tests now unless you feel unwell and are curious.

Just isolate him so that you don’t all get sick.

We travelled to Greece this week and because testing is over now, and cases are so high in the U.K., half the plane probably had it. I really wouldn’t be feeling guilty about travelling with someone who has ceased to be infectious several days earlier.

Stop testing. It will only make you anxious and it makes zero difference. If you were travelling tomorrow I might be more concerned (that you’d all be unwell on holiday!) but not now.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 09/04/2022 08:11

Dd 14 had it in January along with hundreds at her school.
She was testing negative within 3 days.

BrieAndChilli · 09/04/2022 08:13

Thanks. Your experiences make me think there might be a chance we will go on holiday!!
Hopefully DS will be testing positive by Saturday and the rest of us manage to avoid it!! The only sticking point is DS2 who is 11 needs to have a PCR before we fly. He’s only had 1 vaccination so far but I’m hoping that as it was only 10 days ago he still has good immunity so won’t catch it!

ssd · 09/04/2022 08:14

I wouldn't have tested.
Half the planes probably got covid.

Lulu1919 · 09/04/2022 08:20

Oh god that just rubbish I feel so sad for you ...I'd be in tears !!!!!!!

INeedNewShoes · 09/04/2022 08:20

Studies have shown that infectiousness really drops after day 5 so I don’t think there’s a moral issue at all with him flying at day 9.

Ventilation has also been shown to make a significant difference to transmission so open all your windows a couple of inches at home to reduce the risk of you catching it.

Otherwise just sending sympathy. It’s thoroughly crap timing for you.

Crunchymum · 09/04/2022 08:25

@Fadeout83

Where I live kids have to wear a mask to school all day unless eating (3 years old and up)

Where we live this was thankfully never mandated. Masking young children is a line I'm glad we never crossed.

My teen tested positive for 10 days Hmm
IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 09/04/2022 09:29

Just wanted to say I recently had covid and tested negative after 5 days. Good luck!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 09/04/2022 09:32

@BrieAndChilli

Yes DS double vaccinated. I know of he tests negative on day 5 and 6 he can end isolation but not sure if it’s morally right for him fly on a plane on day 9. Plus I’m sure the rest of us will test positive at some point this week!
Yes, I’m sure everyone else on that flight will be morals first. If he tests negative get on that flight!!

I had it not long ago and my partner and daughter didn’t get it so you might be okay. Just lock him in his room 🤣

WTF475878237NC · 09/04/2022 09:40

Oh how annoying. It's taken well over a week for me to test positive once my symptoms started.

Discountclaimed · 09/04/2022 09:58

You are going to be OK. You might be recovered 8 days from now. You can’t change the outcome either way so please take these FlowersBrewCake and focus on everyone getting healed.

Someonemustknowtheanswer · 09/04/2022 09:59

Just get on the plane all of you.
