Hi all,

I want to buy my nephew a board game that he can play from childhood to an adult.

Could you please give me suggestions for any that you would recommend?TIA

Games we enjoy:
Chess
Backgammon
Sorry!
The London game
Cluedo
Labyrinth

Most are probably 8+, though Sorry! can be much younger.

How old is he?

BelfastSmile · 08/04/2022 10:49

We need to know his age; lots of board games work well for age 8-adult, but if he's under 8ish it'll be trickier.

Games we love though (and id say all of these are 8+ at least) are:

Ticket To Ride
Railway Ink
Castle Panic
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle (probably more 10+ I'd say)
Carcassone

Check whether you have a board game café nearby - they're a good way to try out different games. You could take your nephew there for an afternoon as a present, and then whatever game he likes best could be his Christmas present?

Best suggestion I presume would be Chess because it's very good to your child's brain

Or you can choose basketbros if you plan to change into video games

What age? And are his parents into board games at all? Modern board games like Ticket to Ride are very hard to learn if you don't have anyone around who gets the conventions of board gaming.

I'd agree with chess or Othello.

Rozbos · 08/04/2022 11:10

Settlers of Catan is a great one. Once you get the hang of it it's relatively simple to play but always fun.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 08/04/2022 11:26

Games my DC (17 and 15) have played from childhood and still enjoy.
Uno.
Uno flip
Dos
Othello
Sorry
Whot (although this is basically Uno, but an older version - they play with my Grandad and his pack of cards which are from my mums childhood I think)
Dragonology
Harry Potter Battle for Hogwarts
Cluedo (we have the original, Dr Who and Harry Potter versions)
Rummikib

Andariego · 08/04/2022 11:28

We like ‘Who Knows Where?’

Obelisk · 08/04/2022 11:31

Chameleon is a brilliant game for any age and easy to play

emmathedilemma · 08/04/2022 11:40

scrabble

HarrietSchulenberg · 08/04/2022 11:53

Chess, Backgammon, Othello, Scrabble, Monopoly and Cluedo go down well here. You can get some lovely sets of these rather than bog standard ones.

Monkeybutt1 · 08/04/2022 12:11

Jumanji

Whattodoin2022 · 08/04/2022 21:21

Thank you all. He is only 3 at the moment but I wanted to get him something that he can play for a while like my sibling and I did. We still have some of our childhood board games and still play them.

The parents do play board games and already have ticket to ride, sorry and monopoly at home.

I know he is young at the moment for board game but there is a special event happening soon for him and I wanted to give him something that he will be able to use for years and years.

I will look at these suggestions. It is much appreciated.

How about a personalized version of something like monopoly or cluedo?

CannotShakeIt · 08/04/2022 21:59

Risk

MadameDragon · 08/04/2022 22:02

One of those traditional games compendiums with multiple board games?

JaffavsCookie · 08/04/2022 22:04

Settlers of catan

IstayedForTheFeminism · 08/04/2022 22:04

How about a nice wooden games compendium? Budget allowing. Depending on what it has in it he could well play some at 3, but keep it forever.
My teens are currently playing draughts from the compendium they got about 12-13 years ago.

SunflowerSmith · 08/04/2022 22:05

3 is very young to be into board games that will last for years, at that age they like simple games that they can understand without getting annoyed because they're difficult and therefore boring.

You could maybe get Dobble which is a card game, my 9 year old still enjoys that and it could easily be played with a 3 year old.

Idiotintraining · 08/04/2022 23:21

We love snakes and ladders.

pinkcattydude · 08/04/2022 23:25

We’ve played dobble at grandparents, school, on holiday and at the hospital.

angelsandinsects · 08/04/2022 23:29

Are you buying him a heritage type present which he will use one day (maybe) or something for him to use on the day and which will last for a while longer.
If you want something suitable for a 3yo, then Orchard Toys have some good one. DS was playing ludo, frustration and snakes and ladders at 3 but I think he wa slightly unusual in that there but desperate to hang out with older siblings

Arucanafeather · 08/04/2022 23:40

Kersplat- it’s a great game. Easy for 3 year old to enjoy. It’s like frustration but with playdoh and isn’t as frustrating, as the game starts off slowly but then goes get quicker.

Sequence is another game that they can play when little and also play as they’re older and understand the game more.

A great first game with cards is “follow the jack”.

Arucanafeather · 08/04/2022 23:42

Rumicub & quirkle are also games that we’ve played with our kids. When younger we play an adapted version and help them on there goes.
Not a board game but croquet is good too.

Emelene · 08/04/2022 23:44

We love board games. Only one my 3 year old can do is Peppa Pig snakes and ladders though…
