www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/02/stand-up-to-china-and-putin-foreign-policy-at-heart-of-germany-vote

Baerbock, a 40-year-old with a background in international law, has been one of the Greens’ most vocal advocates of tying German foreign policy more firmly to values rather than economic needs.

If she were to become chancellor, she has vowed to withdraw government support for the almost complete Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Germany and Russia, which critics say will boost Putin’s geopolitical influence.

Echoing rhetoric from within the White House, she recently said that Germany’s relationship with China should be marked by a “competition of systems: authoritarian powers versus liberal democracy”.

“The clarity with which the Greens now talk about sanctions against Russia – including a stop of Nord Stream 2 – and position themselves on China is remarkable,” said Ralf Fücks, a former Green politician who heads the Centre for Liberal Modernity thinktank.

Live every day as if it’s your last is my mantra having lost someone suddenly

honeyfox · 05/04/2022 23:05

You don't need to go mad but I agree with the sentiment. My mum died of breast cancer at 56 and I'm currently clearing out her mum's house (died of old age over 90), so many packaged bedclothes and tablecloths etc kept for best it's so depressing. Don't assume anything and use the best stuff.

UrsulaPandress · 05/04/2022 23:06

🤔

UrsulaPandress · 05/04/2022 23:06

I agree. Life’s the longest thing you’ll ever do.

Iamthewombat · 05/04/2022 23:09

I imagine that life would feel quite long if you were trying to live for 25 years on the state pension alone. With diabetes.

Iamthewombat · 05/04/2022 23:10

But I am reassured to know that the German Green Party features a politician called Ralf Fucks.

spudjulia · 05/04/2022 23:11

Also lost a parent quite young, before they retired, so that did have an impact on my mentality. I don't believe phrases like that mean screw the future and only live for today. Rather, don't put off enjoying your life until some point in the distant future, because today is equally as important as tomorrow. That's how I interpret it anyway. I have a pension 😬

LardyDee · 05/04/2022 23:11

It's Carpe Diem for thick people

Or "be present in the moment" for non-twats Grin

ILiveInSalemsLot · 05/04/2022 23:16

I would just cut it short to life is short, take the trip. There no fatness and less debt.

LardyDee · 05/04/2022 23:18

The last word needs to rhyme with cake 🤔

Iamthewombat · 05/04/2022 23:21

For heaven’s sake?

PaperTyger · 05/04/2022 23:22

ssd At the risk of sounding trite esp as dreaful living costs are hitting us - a balance of even £2 month can add up for "tomorow". Once that habit is there.....

JaneJeffer · 05/04/2022 23:26

Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.

Babyroobs · 06/04/2022 00:35

It's a bit cheesy but having lost 2 friends suddenly in the past few months aged 52 and 55, I have re-evaluated my life a bit and can understand the sentiment.

Babyroobs · 06/04/2022 00:38

@Babyroobs

It's a bit cheesy but having lost 2 friends suddenly in the past few months aged 52 and 55, I have re-evaluated my life a bit and can understand the sentiment.
I should also say both these friends were heavy drinkers and smokers and cake is to me what drink was to them so I may just skip on the cake side of things.
LovelyYellowLabrador · 06/04/2022 00:48

Why am I asking ? Because I suppose I get sick of eatting healthily and being sensible and just soemmetimes feel like I’m going to have a midlife crisis
I’m 44

mowly77 · 06/04/2022 00:48

The saying itself is shitly-worded but as a 46 year old woman with incurable metastatic breast cancer and a beautiful 3 year old daughter - live while you can. Because you never know what’s around the corner. My cancer went away for ten years & I lived amd enjoyed myself. But yeah don’t get diabetes or in debt if possible … it’s a tricky balance but I err on the side of today, obviously ….

LovelyYellowLabrador · 06/04/2022 00:53

mowly77 I’m really truely sorry to hear that

Strokethefurrywall · 06/04/2022 01:00

Yes whilst the saying is shit, it's not about getting yourself into debt, or getting fat and unhealthy.

It's about recognizing that all the things you slog for should be savored and enjoyed.
Stop and reflect on those moments rather than trying to constantly get to the next "big" thing.

Life is but a blink of an eye but the saying probably isn't about saying "fuck it" and getting yourself in a pickle, it's about enjoying the things that bring you joy, if that is indeed eating cake, or buying shoes or saving up for a trip of a lifetime (not putting it on a credit card and sliding into debt).

Silverswirl · 06/04/2022 01:17

My mum died suddenly and instantly in an accident at 40.
Once that happens to someone you love dearly then you do tend to have more of this attitude.
If it hasn’t happened to you then you never think it will.

Kanaloa · 06/04/2022 01:26

I guess I don’t really see the point of it. Life is relatively short. Like shorter than how long buildings last but longer than how long butterflies live. Sometimes I buy shoes. Sometimes I have a cake. I don’t really need to say it like that?

Life is longer than a butterflies. Save cake money and buy a car.

Life is shorter than a thousand years. Go on the bus to Blackpool and buy one of those lollies that looks like a willy.

Just seems pointless to say it? If you want a cake and you have adequate money to purchase a cake then buy a cake.

blueshoes · 06/04/2022 01:26

Sounds consumerist, as if you can only be happy eating and spending and living for the moment.

What about the joy in building something meaningful, working for long term goals or service to others. These things give a deep and abiding sense of purpose to one's life. Not just me me me. Shallow tosh.

Kanaloa · 06/04/2022 01:30

I guess what I was trying to say is it just seems like trying to wrap up doing normal things in this twee little faux-philosophical quote so you can think ‘ahh I’m SAVOURING life.’

When you could just buy a pair of shoes , enjoy them, and get on with life. There’s no need to have a sound bite to make it more acceptable.

Midlifemusings · 06/04/2022 01:42

I am definitely a carpe diem person. Life is too short to not enjoy it. I have had a couple close calls with death and I realize it could be done tomorrow. I have no interest in the head down, work hard, and hope you live long enough to enjoy it when you retire attitude.
