Is anyone else experiencing this weird flu thing

Confused since Friday I’ve felt very unwell, tested negative and it seems like half my friends have some weird flu/cold. Is it just us? Grin

For a PCR test near me, it costs £75 to £125, depending on how quickly you need the results back.

That’s not an option “if you have symptoms” every time, or for your family members, when “symptoms” have just been expanded to include most cold symptoms.

People don't seem to understand that we do pay for the NHS. Just because you aren't paying at the point access does not make it free.

I live abroad in Europe and have just got over a terrible cold/flu bug. I was sick, as were my two toddlers. My 3 year old had a temperature for over a week, cough, runny nose and fatigue, my 1 year old had it too but not as bad. I was looking after them both whilst thinking I was going to collapse with tiredness, and coughing to that extent when you have weak pelvic floor is not fun!
I had a PCR and tested negative, the paediatrician did a blood test on my son and said it was viral. Floored us for two weeks and only now feeling like we are getting back to our normal selves 3 weeks on.

Even less reason to pay upfront as well then?

So we've already paid then? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bit cheeky really to use our tax money to purchase tests then charge us to use them.

@gamerchick

No, there's a pretty nasty lurgy going about that isn't covid and a really weird one that doesn't make you feel I'll but gives a really tight chest Hmm also not covid. Personally being cooped up in lockdowns did our immune systems no favours really. Even if it was for the greater good.
The Greater Good.

Right. So why the fuck would I pay again? Hmm

The Greater Good

Your point?

blobby10 · 05/04/2022 13:52

I had a horrible cold early March - came on really quickly, sore throat, cough, no snot which is unlike me, slight temperature at night. Followed a typical 'cold' pattern of 3 days feeling off, 3 days feeling really shit then 3 days getting better. Still got a cough but nowhere near as bad as it was - some days I was coughing so much I gave myself a splitting headache.

bumblingbovine49 · 05/04/2022 13:52

@Phascolarctos

Well yes, you do have to pay - just like most people have to pay for LFTs now.

Having to pay does not suddenly mean you can use LFTs reliably when you have symptoms.

I really have to challenge this as it is misinformation. LFTs work perfectly well when you have symptoms. In the past we were told to rely on PCRs when we had symptoms because they didn't want the risk of a false negative when symptoms were present , thus meaning people might go out when likely to be very infectious.

However you are no more likely to get a false negative when you have symptoms than when you don't. In fact having symptoms means an LFT is more likely to pick up an infections than if you don't have symptoms

Calennig · 05/04/2022 14:04

Apaprently here all the PCR testing sites for the general public have closed - the government site just directed to getting LFTs.

I've had some family members in different household across UK and DH test with LFTs and be negative every time but had some flu like cold - didn't pass it on to rest of the household - so I suspect there are other bugs going around as normal on top of covid.

Nidan2Sandan · 05/04/2022 14:12

Why would anyone pay for a PCR nowadays?

Too sick to go out - stay home
Not too sick to go out- carry on

It's really very simple.

And yes, OP. I have the same thing. Temp, stinging eyes, exhaustion but 3 negative LFTs. Been unwell for a week now. Dh had the same but only lasted a day for him..

blackheartsgirl · 05/04/2022 14:55

@Phascolarctos

Can’t get one in wales. Only for priority groups. All the local test centres have been shut down.

Dd tested positive with lft. I had the same symptoms and tested negative throughout. I lost my taste and smell and she didn’t. We both stayed in anyway, felt too Iillto do much though

WingingItSince1973 · 05/04/2022 15:00

Yes. I have all the symptoms mentioned, sore throat, aching body, headaches, snotty, ulcers in my mouth, sleeping like crazy. 4 neg tests so far. Wondering if the throat swab ones would pick it up earlier if it is covid. I had covid over a year ago and was better than this! I've been eating super healthy too and trying to get fit and healthy!!

DG123 · 05/04/2022 15:06

Yes! My whole family have had it along with coughs. We're all testing negative though.

Phascolarctos · 05/04/2022 15:12

@blackheartsgirl of course you can get one in Wales. You just have to pay for it.

blackheartsgirl · 05/04/2022 15:21

I can’t afford to pay. Have you thought of that?

Phascolarctos · 05/04/2022 15:25

Yes, but again - not what you said.

Findingapath · 05/04/2022 15:46

We all have it, me DH and 3 kids inc baby. We all had covid Jan and Feb. All tests are now definitely negative…but we feel awful, it started 3 weeks ago and hopefully on its way out now.
When the babies cough was at its worst it was pretty scary, he seems to be on the mend thankfully.
I’m completely exhausted by lunch time and full of shivers and a cough that makes me feel sick. It’s the worst cold iv had for a long time.

Ecosralayce · 05/04/2022 15:56

yes, Ive got it. Felt grim since last Friday, gradually getitng worse. Really snotty, sinus pressure and pain that wakes me in the night, ache all over, shivery, sore throat and headache. Have been doing daily LFTs since Friday and all negative. It feels just like when I had covid at Christmas, but LFTs say not! Really odd cause I normally never get colds or other viruses.

freshcarnation · 05/04/2022 16:31

Horrendous flu in our family. Everyone had PCRs along with multiple LFTs and all negative. We've been so poorly. Much worse than when the family had Covid. Classic flu with vomiting, coughing, sinus pain, shivering then burning up, aches and pains everywhere. My DH is almost over it after 5 days. I've had it for 8 days now and my lungs are in a horrible state.

KateTheEighth · 05/04/2022 18:00

I tested negative for 5 days until I got a positive, similar for ds1 and dh

Luckily we have lots of tests (kids got them through school, I got them through work and dh did too)

I know a lot of people who tested negative for a couple of days and then stop because they assume it's negative

user1471504210 · 05/04/2022 22:01

No point. Just being unhelpful and irritating :)

Tsk, you've disappointed me man Grin
user1471538283 · 05/04/2022 22:12

I felt really unwell for nearly a week before I tested positive for covid. Now its been over a week and I'm still not well. I feel like I've been sick with something since Christmas.

But there is a bad cold going around.
