Can I remove my floppy mole using a skin tag remover?

HFG37 · 03/04/2022 20:36

I have mole on my back that is very slowly getting larger and floppier. I have had it checked out and it is fine tho GP did mention it would continue to grow. It is basically like a skin tag, albeit a large one. So could I remove it using a skin tag remover, the ones that starve the tag of blood so it eventually drops off? I can't afford to get it removed by a doctor, that would be thousands Shock It catches on my bra strap and is ugly so would like it gone.

I can't advise from a medical point of view, but I did this and it was great. Worked really well and am glad I did it. Mine was also getting h caught.
Tried tying a piece of cotton round it first but couldn't get it tight enough so got one of the kits, not painful at all and it fell off within a week.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/04/2022 21:36

I tied a piece of thread round mine and it died and fell off.

Thelnebriati · 03/04/2022 21:38

I used a piece of thread on one, and put clear nail polish on the thread on a second which was bigger. They've both gone with no issues. (I did have them looked at first.)

This is interesting as I have one of these around a bra strap and would like it gone. I’ve used the kits and they’re brilliant so would be delighted if it’s ok to use them on these weird floppy moles!

UsernameInTheTown · 03/04/2022 21:43

I used some stuff which burns them off. Hurt like a fucker where it got on the skin around the mole but great result. I have some lotion left, PM me if you want it and I'll post it to you?

MissMaple82 · 03/04/2022 21:45

I had mine surgically removed on the NHS because it was catching on my bra strap.

Downtherefordancing · 03/04/2022 21:47

You can buy kits? I need to look.

I have two and they are both in locations that I find impossible to tie cotton around them. Think I need a third hand Blush

ImInStealthMode · 03/04/2022 21:48

Are you sure it would be thousands to go private OP? I had one removed from the top inside of my thigh, it was about a penny size in diameter and stood about half a cm off my leg.

As I remember it was about £200 to have it taken off at a private skin clinic, best money I've ever spent.

Octomore · 03/04/2022 21:49

I had two moles removed last year. It does not cost thousands. Less than £500 for two in fact.

JamSandwich89 · 03/04/2022 21:49

I have no medical training, but I have had a big mole removed at the doctors. The tail that was under the skin was creepily long (I didn't even know moles had tail things, like a root, until I saw it and was grossed out haha). The doctor told me that if all the tail isn't removed the mole will grow back... So just something to maybe consider! I'm guessing this would be the case for all moles...?

Helpmplease · 03/04/2022 21:51

I had a face mole removed free of charge at GP, was nothing wrong with it they just offered cos I went to get it checked out.

TokyoTen · 03/04/2022 22:22

I did the same as @BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation - worked fine 🙂

PandemicAtTheDisco · 03/04/2022 22:24

Wart remover worked on my relatives skin tags.

ElephantandGrasshopper · 03/04/2022 22:27

I've had one removed at the gp surgery, it may be worth going back and asking again, and emphasize that it is causing you problems catching on clothes.

Cherrysoup · 03/04/2022 22:59

Following advice on here, I used a nail clipper on mine. It was not pain free if anyone is considering this very quick, effective (bite on a stick!) method.

Freeze it with an ice cube first.

@Cherrysoup Shock Nooooooo! I feel faint at the thought! Grin

From one or two of the answers I'm wondering if I should have said how big it is. It's got to be 4mm wide and 8mm long. Is this too big for home treatment?

@Helpmplease I did ask the GP a couple of years ago, and he said they don't offer mole removal anymore, and I even made a point of saying it catches on my bra strap.

@ImInStealthMode I've looked everywhere and can't find anything affordable. The pre-consultations are typically nearly £200 alone. Do you mind me asking where you got yours done? Was it a salon, clinic etc?

@HFG37 It was an aesthetic skin clinic locally. I should add that I'm in the Channel Islands so no NHS here. My GP did refer me to the hospital because it caught on my underwear (and affected my confidence) but they knocked the referral back but it wasn't dangerous in the sense of being potentially cancerous.

Nowhere should be charging that for a consultation! Where are you based? The place I went to was in Guiseley.

Ossoduro2 · 04/04/2022 10:40

Go to a different Gp about it. They should do it on the nhs if it’s catching on your bra strap.

BigWoollyJumpers · 04/04/2022 10:42

Depending on type and size, I have the little ones that collect round my neck done at a local beauty salon, 45 min treatment costs £60 - she did about 50 last time!! She uses a laser, I looked like I had caught some horrible disease. But all gone and no scarring, she also removed some flat keratosis the same way.

I have since had some bigger ones done with a private dermatolagist. He charges £200 for cryotherapy. Bit stingy, and look awful for a couple of weeks, but then disappear, again no scarring.

In the past I have had others surgically removed or scraped (privately), and that does cost hundreds/thousands, that by a dermatologist who was basically on the make!! He did do an amazing job though, and those were on my forehead.

StrangeCondition · 04/04/2022 10:44

I removed 6 of mine from my armpits mine using a skin tag remover pen, hurt like hell but did the job. Did it around 6 months ago now, there was a little scarring but this has now faded and gone

MissisBoote · 04/04/2022 10:45

I've used a nail clipper on a skin tag before - not sure I'd be brave enough to use it on a mole Grin so kudos to you @Cherrysoup

GPs won't do it, all mine were in/around my armpit and were so uncomfortable, especially in the hot weather. GP said it was cosmetic and it couldn't be done on the NHS Sad
Cornettoninja · 04/04/2022 10:49

Ask your GP for a dermatology referral to check your moles properly. You’ll probably have a long wait but if you can get sat in front of a dermatologist I reckon you’ll have a decent chance of them agreeing to remove it given its regularly traumatised by your clothing.
