Baby crying for hours and hours

babycryingandcrying · 03/04/2022 20:05

Hello,

I have a 6 week old daughter and she cries for hours and hours at a time.

It is really wearing us down.

She has a lot of reflux and keeps on spitting up milk between feedings.

She is gaining weight fine though.

The health visitor thinks she might have a tongue tie.

She doesn't seem to have belly ache (no hard belly, no pulling up of legs).

Her crying and screaming is so so awful. Her face gets really red and she is crying like she's being murdered.

I try to console her, try to hold her in different positions, nothing helps.

At the moment she's lying on the sofa next to me, while I'm typing this, screaming her head off.

I never heard a baby scream like this :(

I don't know what to do. My husband thinks I should go to A and E tomorrow, but I don't think they can help us.

We tried Infacol, but that also doesn't help.

Can anyone help please, she screams for most of the time she's awake and it's really not sustainable.

The rare times she's not screaming she's actually quite sweet and has started to smile at me now.

When you’ve explained this to the midwife/ health visitor what do they say,

KittyBurrito · 03/04/2022 20:17

Don't know what to say just sending Flowers. My baby had reflux too and the screaming was unbearable, crazy-making, endless. I hope you get some help soon.

Daisychainsandglitter · 03/04/2022 20:19

My DD1 used to scream and scream for hours on end. She used to go purple in the face and it was just awful.
Our in laws used to come round and sit with us in the evenings and take it in turns to have her as it just wore us down so much.
DD1 also used to be very refluxy and I would say that her symptoms started to really show/get worse from about 5 weeks onwards.
We took her to A&E too as she stopped gaining weight and she was just so unhappy and poorly.
Turned out she had CMPA. Once she was out onto a prescription formula Neocate within two days she was a completely different baby. I think given how unhappy your baby is and the references you make to reflux I would certainly ask your GP for a trial of prescription formula to rule out CMPA.
I'm sorry that your going through this as I absolutely understand how relentless and how helpless you feel. I promise it does get better. Wishing you all the best and I hope your baby feels better soon. Thanks

Is she formula or BF? I would perhaps wonder at cows milk allergy if she is formula fed.

Perhaps contact your GP if you get no help from the HV.

Daisy95 · 03/04/2022 20:21

My daughter was exactly the same and she had CPMA. If breastfeeding you could try cutting out dairy? or if formula feeding speak to gp and see if they'll give you a cow milk free formula to try?

It's really draining so you have my full sympathy, but definitely have a look into it x

Amei · 03/04/2022 20:22

My cousins baby screamed non stop for the first 3 months of his life and it turned out he had a dairy allergy xx

Duracellbunnywannabe · 03/04/2022 20:23

This is not normal. The general advice used to be to seek medical advice after an hour of crying. Have you spoken to your GP?

BusinessMindThoughts · 03/04/2022 20:27

Can you take a short video of it to show your gp?
Is it in the day or mainly starting in the evening?

Sounds like peak colic/ purple crying to me but don't be afraid to go to gp. Dc1 was terrible with colic, but there's nothing you can do if she's been fully checked out and nothing wrong. They may suggest trying dairy-free diet for you so could you try that for a couple of weeks in case it's CMPA?

Sympathies, it's really awful and they sound like they're in great pain.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 03/04/2022 20:29

Both my babies were like this, terribly colicky and unsettled. We tried various things to help (ranitidine/Omeprazole, all the over-the-counter remedies and even a visit to the chiropractor) but in the end they just grew out of it. I can’t remember exactly when (must’ve blocked it out) but by 8-10 weeks the crying was considerably less.

I don’t want to get your hopes up that it’ll magically stop, or suggest that your baby will be the same but sometimes they do just cry a lot and grow out of it. Definitely speak to your HV, there are things you can try and they might work for you.

thebabynanny · 03/04/2022 20:30

Has the GP prescribed any medicine for the reflux? That could be causing her a lot of pain at the moment.

Motherofplants · 03/04/2022 20:31

Sounds like my ds1, who had cmpa. Lots of parents end up at a&e for that due to poor gp/community support. I wouldn't hesitate after my own very long experience...

Arewethebadguys · 03/04/2022 20:33

Our daughter had something similar. Nothing worked except 'tiger in the tree' hold which you might have tried but it was an instant reaction.

Littlepip02 · 03/04/2022 20:34

All I can say is I 100% felt this 😪
My son was like this from 2 weeks old until around 6 months and even then he was still miserable.

He also had reflux, was put on to medication and also we tried dairy free for potential CMPA, but nothing ever really worked, all I can say is that he just grew out of it but. If my son wasn't asleep he was screaming I honestly don't know how I got through those days but I did and you will too Thanks

boymum88 · 03/04/2022 20:34

Oh bless you, it's soo hard, but I echo what others have said it's not normal. Just shows that reflux is not being managed or she has a allergy
If it's reflux it can take trying a few different things before you find what works, have you tired gaviscon infant, if on formula you can try a anti reflux one ( with 2 feeds my first was like a different baby - he was also on anti reflux meds) a dummy can also help, little and often feeds, keep upright for 20-30 mins after feed. Raise the head of her crib ( a couple of books under the feet)
Have they referred her to get her tongue tie snipped as she maybe taking in air when feeding

superstar84 · 03/04/2022 20:34

Another one suggesting a dairy intolerance

Dd was given neocate and advised to use dr browns bottles and within a few days was a complete different baby, she was much more settled and would lie down without any fuss

Our ds was intolerant to dairy so I was pretty quick to see the signs and asked the gp for an urgent paeds referral as the gp needed a paediatrician to prescribe the neocate

There are some milks where the milk protein is broken down into much smaller particles such as aptimel pepti but for a completely milk free formula at the time only paediatricians could prescribe them

tedgran · 03/04/2022 20:38

My stepdaughters baby, born late November is allergic to regular formula , and now they have been given a possible diagnosis of allergy to her mum's breast milk. They are carrying on with the prescription formula, and will try the baby with breast milk again in a few weeks to check the reaction. Luckily they have quite a lot of breast milk in the freezer.

When did your Babys reflux stop? xx

My daughter is being mixed-fed, formula and breast milk. We will try anti reflux formula from this evening and I will make an appointment with GP tomorrow and ask for prescription formula and to investigate the tongue tie.

It is so soul destroying thanks everyone for your support xx

Missmonkeypenny · 03/04/2022 20:57

Don't use infacol with reflux, it's acidic and aggrevates it.

Do investigate the tongue tie, but get it asked by someone properly trained. The NHS wait list is usually a few weeks long but private practitioners are usually a within a few days job - I had DS2s done at home the day after I contacted her.

Even if weigh gain is good, you should still be given medication for the reflux if it's causing your baby pain. If it is CMPA you will also need to remove dairy from your diet.

Kezzie200 · 03/04/2022 21:00

My newborn daughter did this when I ate lots of strawberries and was breastfeeding. I love strawberries! She has a sort of colic caused by me!

So look at what you might be eating if you are bf

crackersforcheese · 03/04/2022 21:02

My little one had bad reflux and ended up on omeprazole. We also used Dentinox drops in his bottles and they were brilliant. I would absolutely contact the gp to rule out any other issues. Sending love and strength! It's hard going x

DSGR · 03/04/2022 21:08

My first was like this. I tried everything - cutting things out of my diet (didn’t work), switching to bottle feeding and non-dairy milk (didn’t work). He truly was just the most unsettled baby. If you’re breastfeeding will she just feed. Sometimes that’s all you can do to calm them down.
My child did just grow out of it - didn’t have allergies at all. But it was hell. I sympathise

MrsPatrickDempsey · 03/04/2022 21:18

It is so hard trying to figure out what's going on with them.
I have posted the link to this before - I think it describes babies quite well. Hope it's some help.

MrsMo21 · 03/04/2022 21:21

My DD was exactly like this.

She had CMPA, tongue tie and reflux. A couple of visits to A&E, saw a lady called Faye at Rockabyereflux.

Changed bottles, dummies, had tongue tie sorted, oral physio, cranial osteopath, Neocate and Omeprazole. Completely sorted and she’s slept like a dream since 12 weeks old. She’s so chilled and smiley everyone comments - a complete change from when she was very small.

If you want any advice or help please PM me. I was at my wits end with my DD, I completely understand how you feel. I promise you, it WILL get better. Lots of unmumsnetty hugs 💐

HiKelsey · 03/04/2022 21:26

I agree with everyone else, possible CMPA and maybe needs some medication for the reflux.

There's a great group on Facebook called CMPA main group which is so supportive.

My 2.5 year old still suffers with her reflux unfortunately.
