Baby crying for hours and hours

Hello,

I have a 6 week old daughter and she cries for hours and hours at a time.

It is really wearing us down.

She has a lot of reflux and keeps on spitting up milk between feedings.

She is gaining weight fine though.

The health visitor thinks she might have a tongue tie.

She doesn't seem to have belly ache (no hard belly, no pulling up of legs).

Her crying and screaming is so so awful. Her face gets really red and she is crying like she's being murdered.

I try to console her, try to hold her in different positions, nothing helps.

At the moment she's lying on the sofa next to me, while I'm typing this, screaming her head off.

I never heard a baby scream like this :(

I don't know what to do. My husband thinks I should go to A and E tomorrow, but I don't think they can help us.

We tried Infacol, but that also doesn't help.

Can anyone help please, she screams for most of the time she's awake and it's really not sustainable.

The rare times she's not screaming she's actually quite sweet and has started to smile at me now.

My daughter did this too. From about 3 weeks. I was distraught and didn't know how to cope and I basically hid in the house because I was scared to take her out.

The crying really calmed down from about 8 weeks and became 'normal' crying by about 3 months. It is SO hard and stressful but time will improve things. I think I read that 6 or 8 weeks is when the crying peaks so you should hopefully see some improvements soon.

My DD didn't have any allergies or reflux. She was just an excessive cryer. I would invest in a sling if you don't already have one.

@Daisychainsandglitter

How did you get on at the GP *@babycryingandcrying*? I hope your appointment went well.
Hi, the GP prescribed some gaviscon and some laxatives. She said if it's not better in a week I should come back for more investigations. xx

I have a sling, but when my daughter has cried herself in a frenzy the sling doesn't help anymore.

I tried it yesterday and it made her even angrier being in there. :((

If they do prescribe Omeprazole for you OP ask them for the suspension not the tablets that you have to dissolve. The suspension is more expensive and it has to be ordered as a special by the pharmacy to be made up by a compounding pharmacy so GP’s usually won’t offer if you don’t ask. It’s so much easier to get in them though and you can ask that they add a sweetened flavour to it strawberry or something so it’s easier to get them to take it.

Good luck- I found it can be a long road to getting what your baby needs so don't be afraid to go back and push for further investigations if it doesn't work.

I can empathise OP, it’s horrible. My DS2 was exactly how you described, there was no consoling him. DH even took him to emergency dr in the middle of the night once, told he was a healthy baby and to take him home.

He did improve, by the time he was 7mths. But it was a very difficult, I felt like a zombie most of the time, especially as I had 21mth old DS1 to look after too. DS1 was such a calm, happy baby, it was quite a shock when DS2 arrived.

It will get easier, you will get through it. My advice would be take any help you are offered, my late MIL was an absolute angel, she helped us so much.

Try cutting out dairy and soy if breast feeding. Although it takes weeks to leave your system if it is that you should see a difference in a few days.

then check if she has a tongue tie, they can be hard to spot by gps or HV so it’s best finding a practitioner from www.tongue-tie.org.uk

Good luck x

Awwww, my thread came back to life 😂 Just a quick update: her crying gradually got better at 3 months, but with her it actually went on until she was 6 months old. She then transformed and is now such a happy, smiley baby. She likes to play with toys and she likes to mess with her big brother, who is 2 years and 3 months.

I don't know why she was screaming like that in the first few months of het life, but it was hell to go through. I've been to the GP so many times, even to A and E.

I don't know how we survived as a family, but we did and here we are. She still has reflux, but the pediatrician said we should wait for it to get better.

Picture of her attached 😀

Aww your daughter is gorgeous OP ❤️ Pleased you have come out the other side, it is hard work when you are going through it, I remember it well.

fairgame84 · 26/11/2022 10:09

Great news.
She's cute 😍
We have similar crying episodes with DD but put it down to purple crying as there doesn't seem to be a reason for it.

Aww, that's lovely! My DS screamed non stop and stopped at 3 months so I guess it was 3 month colic. Still remember it years later
