Assalamo alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak to those fasting! I thought we could have a thread to support each other and have some general Ramadan chat. Others are free to ask questions too x

Wslm ramadhan Mubarak to you too. Hope the fasting is going well.

mubarak86 · 02/04/2022 15:56

Alhamdulillah so far so good. Weather is decent which always makes it more pleasant. Decided to really cut back on cooking this year, then we rush off for taraweeh prayers. Children are older now so alhamdulillah I've got time for myself.

That is true. Good weather gives you that much needed boost. I’m trying to cut back on food waste too this year Inshallah. I’m okay without snacky bits but dh and the kids like it. It’s my 11 year old dds first full month of proper fasting so I like to make an effort for her.

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 03/04/2022 15:21

Hi can I ask a question? I'm not Muslim but have a friend whose a Muslim and is observing Ramadan. I've not known her for long. Ive heard it's traditional to give dates as gifts in Ramadan is this correct? Would it be odd for me to do this as a non Muslim (give them dates as a gift I mean)

jazzyjazz22 · 03/04/2022 15:22

I'm fasting for the first time and finding it difficult. I'm a revert and finding it hard to stop thinking about food.

MySister · 03/04/2022 15:35

Wasnt meant to fast as very pregnant but ended up being busy and realising at 2 pm that i still hadnt eaten and wasnt hungry so continuing n see how it will go.
Good weather is def good! 6 year old still fasting too today, might even go, on and do her first full day

H1978 · 03/04/2022 15:35

It’s fine to give dates as a gift. I’m sure they’ll really appreciate the gesture. It’s not customary to give anything as such or alternatively you could gift something on Eid like chocolates.

H1978 · 03/04/2022 15:40

@jazzyjazz22 May Allah give you strength to continue fasting. Don’t be too tough on yourself. I always think of those who fast in poorer countries with no idea if they’ll have any food to break their fast with 😢. That usually helps to make it through.

@MySister that’s so cute about your 6 year old. Mine are all older now so everyone’s fasting but I remember their first fasts too, trying to entertain them until it was time lol

BritishDesiGirl · 03/04/2022 15:41

Salam, to All

Great to have a thread for those of us fasting.

Day 2 for me, very under the weather today. I ate too much yesterday so ended feeling horrible.

I hope everyone had a successful 1st or 2nd rosa.

balalake · 03/04/2022 15:43

Thank you OP for reminding us that Ramadan has begun. Out of courtesy to those fasting I do not eat in front of them at work on the days I am in an office, or were it to occur, invite them to social gatherings in daytime hours.

It will get easier. Did you have a predawn meal?
jazzyjazz22 · 03/04/2022 16:37

@flashbac I did manage to get up at 4am.... had some granola and fruits and yogurt. Feeling a little sluggish now though

Try and have some protein.

mubarak86 · 03/04/2022 17:38

Great to see the replies, I knew there were Muslims on MN 😁. @jazzyjazz22, I remember my first year fasting and although it was the winter and the shortest days, it was still very hard. Do you have a good support network around you? I second having a good amount of protein for suhoor (pre Dawn meal).
What's for iftar today? We're going to a new masjid for iftar tonight, and I plan to do that at the weekends inshaAllah. During the week iftar will be soup, bread, dates, jelly sweets for the dc and one other side such as sheesh kebab or samosas. Kids will get hungry after a while (they are teens so need a lot of protein) so every 3 days I'll do a big pot of rice and a tray of chicken and keep it in the fridge and they can help themselves.
I'm trying to eat consciously to satisfied levels, rather than eat everything I crave. I really need to lose a few stone and this might help kick-start me inshaAllah.

MySister · 03/04/2022 18:59

I agree, proteins at sohoor time is a game changer.
For iftar we do some soup and salad and some side dish, for sohoor we might have baked beans and scramble eggs, or a cheese toastie, some nuts fruit and tea.
Older kids might have leftovers after coming back from tarawih prayers.

jazzyjazz22 · 03/04/2022 19:27

@mubarak86 I have some friends who are supportive. Thanks for the tip- will try to include some more protein in the morning. I've cooked some dishes to have in the fridge- chick peas, steamed veg and some Naan bread. Just made some chicken and rice for iftar today so should have enough bits to make a meal at 4am tomorrow! Thank you for the support x

H1978 · 03/04/2022 21:05

I haven’t started fasting yet so it feels like ramadhan hasn’t quite started for me. When kids are at school it will feel like just a normal evening meal.

BritishDesiGirl · 03/04/2022 21:13

If anyone can recommend something for indigestion after iftaar meal. Really struggling, lm not eating unhealthily but feel very unwell after meal and struggling to digest the food.

H1978 · 03/04/2022 21:37

Carom seeds (ajwain) are a great for indigestion. Just chew a few seeds after your meal. I suffer from acid reflux and chewing gum for about 20 minutes after food really helps.

ButterfliesnWaterfalls · 03/04/2022 22:46

Assalaamu alaykum 😊

I’m so glad Easter break is here, so can take it easy for the first two weeks of Ramadan. It makes a huge difference as I work in a school and DS is at school too. So no work or school run! Yay 😁

I’m trying to eat light foods but will see how long that lasts.

Hope everyone manages to achieve their goals for this Ramadan In Sha Allaah ❤️

mubarak86 · 04/04/2022 00:07

Just back from taraweeh, such an amazing feeling mashaAllah. Its only in the last few years that I've been able to go back to taraweeh since having the children. It really feels like Ramadan again alhamdulillah. Off to bed now for a few hours before it's time to get up for suhoor. Mine don't break up for Easter for another week so I'm dreading getting up for the school run.

Hello,

Dates, sweets, cakes... I recently shared some cakes with my non Muslim friends in my department as a token of starting Ramadan. I usually gift something sweet. Hope this helps Smile

maryboleyn · 04/04/2022 04:40

Salaam everyone. So happy to see a thread like this. Too tired to contribute anything at this time though 😴

Jobseeker19 · 04/04/2022 04:51

Salaam Alayakum,
I have found prioritising water at suhoor helps to keep you going. I have a something small and then drink a lot, until I cant drink anymore.

These past few Ramadan have been tough with the long days and heat so I have been
grateful the mild weather and the half-term.

Make sure you have salty food to replace electrolytes at iftaar. It will help with headaches and avoid overly greasy foods.

If you get headaches still I recommend vicks on your temples.
