I'm just wondering if it's better to get a newer Android, an older Apple or a refurbished Apple. Thanks.

Android is the operating system but nevertheless there is something less solid about the screens on iPhones.

But @Zonder - Android isn't a brand, it's just the operating system.

So you're not comparing like with like in a lot of those examples.

The battery life is down to the phone manufacturer - the same goes for the quality of the screen and the amount of storage available. It has nothing to do with the fact that the phones run on Android.

The battery life/quality of eg, a Samsung phone will be very different to that of a Nokia or a Huwaei or a Sony.

I have never cracked my screen but I have cracked the back which was £40 from our local trusted repairer. Not bank breaking but annoying nonetheless. I have an XR. Assume the back is glass. Battery life is quite awful, almost three years in it sits at 85%. I will at some point buy a new battery as I just can't be bothered paying these ridiculous prices for a new phone. Apple also make phones effectively obsolete as the phones can no longer be updated and apps won't work as need a newer system version. I don't think androids do this.

I did a few years ago and hated it so swapped back after less than a week. We all have ipads, which I love, but for a phone I love Android.

CarbonelCat · 02/04/2022 20:03

We used to have apple everything but I got so annoyed with the battery life issues, and the fact that you increasingly needed to have apple everything and it was all so so so much more expensive that we made the break.

We are all android now, all DC phones etc and we pay next to nothing compared to Apple. I genuinely think it's a mugs game.

But what I'm saying is that Apple is notorious for poor battery life.

But that's only one of your points.

All the others will vary hugely depending on what brand of phone you buy - it has nothing to do with the fact that they're on the Android OS.

MyCatStealsSponges · 02/04/2022 20:46

I’ve had both. Never noticed issues with battery life for either with the newer models. Battery life has improved all round. I transferred data from Apple to Android in seconds, think I used a free app. It was super easy. Took me a day or two to get used to Android, fine after that. Honestly don’t get why people are so tribal about it all. Choose the phone that suits you best whatever the OS.

And it's the one you chose to refer to in the post I was responding to!

Whitefire · 02/04/2022 21:13

@Okeydoky

I have Android for my personal phone and my work phone is an iPhone. I really don't get the fuss about iPhones. The battery is worse and they are less customisable.
Same here, I use it as little as possible.
BearSoFair · 02/04/2022 21:31

I recently went from Android (Galaxy A40) to a refurbished iPhone 11, some minor annoyances but overall for me the pros have outweighed the cons. The better camera and better battery life especially!

BearSoFair · 02/04/2022 21:37

Oh I see battery life is being mentioned as a negative by others...obviously can only speak for myself and both are used handsets but my A40 was showing battery health (3rd party app) of 84% and discharging at around 15% per hour of use. Refurbished iPhone arrived with 88% battery health and I usually use approx 30% battery per day.

AppleCrumbleIceCream · 03/04/2022 07:20

I was a big fan of Android phones, loved the way you had more control over how you wanted it to look, apps etc, but the last two Androids I owned had the stupid glass backing that broke within days of purchase.
Seeing as I had an iPad which I love, I thought I’d give the iPhone a go.

As I’m getting older, I needed something a bit simpler and ‘solid’ if you get my meaning, so my iPhone SE (2020 version) fits the bill.

It does what it needs to do.
I love the password saver, find my phone etc, not bothered too much about the quality of photos too much, though the photos come out okay.

Not bothered about needing a full screen, though maybe one day when my eyesight gets steadily worse, that might change.
Size wise, not too big, not too small.
Battery no better or worse than android.

The only negative is the the price, I agree. It cost me somewhere between £400 - £450. Fucking ridiculous 😡 though I did go with 128GB storage option.

So, it’s up to you, op. There are positives and negatives with both.

BrightGoldenHazeintheMeadow · 03/04/2022 17:54

Thanks very much everyone. Really interesting to hear all of your views.
