Always had an android - thinking of getting an Apple - thoughts?

I'm just wondering if it's better to get a newer Android, an older Apple or a refurbished Apple. Thanks.

The only Apple product I have is an elderly iPad. I do quite like it, and yes, I can get audio and Kindle books on it. No problems there.

I've always had android for my phones though. I'm used to it and I like it that way.

Lambanddog · 02/04/2022 01:29

Android. Surely yiu are paying for the branding otherwise.

Donkeywonk · 02/04/2022 05:25

I went back to Android as iPhones are so expensive that when i needed to replace it I could only afford a much older model and could have higher specs for less because there's market competition in phones with Android.

I was expecting Apple to be much easier to use but found it less intuitive, some features I like but other times it makes doing task's unnecessarily complicated. Most my family/friends use whatapp to video call & message now.

Apple battery life was terrible and would go from 20% to dead in a flash, I assumed it was just as older but still seems to be a regular complaint. Thankfully my new phone can go days without charge and is super fast to top up.

millytint44 · 02/04/2022 05:48

Google pay works on android and is just as accessible as apple pay.

IPhones are completely overrated. My 13 year old is already brainwashed that they are cooler than Android.

sweetbellyhigh · 02/04/2022 05:52

I have the latest apple and it is no better than a few models back and definitely not superior to android.

Plus it costs at least double a comparable android. My next phone will be android again

NelsonScrandela · 02/04/2022 06:31

I made the move a few years ago. I preferred android as everything was linked including websites on my laptop. Now I'm with Apple, I have the watch and everything is set up so I'll probably stay. It's not as good and I find myself paying for Apple Music and additional storage.

The only good thing about Apple is that when you get a new phone everything is already loaded as the previous phone but then of nothing changes, what's the point in a new phone?

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 02/04/2022 06:39

I've had iPhones for years and would never go back to Android.

They are quick, easy to use and have long battery lives (I just charge mine overnight and I'm on it all day for work - including using the camera and the 4G). I've never had any issue with it crashing or freezing either like I did with previous androids.

I don't care that my phone isn't customisable because I don't need it to be. I also have a MacBook and I'd ever ever go back to Windows.

I had years of constant problems with Windows machines - they're slow, freeze constantly and constantly need upgrading and require various add-ons to work properly, whereas I've had my MacBook for four years and it still runs like new.

Zonder · 02/04/2022 06:46

Our family is split 50/50. Parents have Android and kids got iPhones a couple of years ago for the cool. My youngest is switching back to android with the next phone after getting fed up of needing new screens but my eldest still wants the cool.

Basically what we have found is:
Cons of apple:
Apple screens crack more easily
Apple battery life is pants
Less storage for your money on Apple
More glitches on Apple
The chargers don't last long (apparently apple make as much on selling replacement chargers as they do phones - allegedly)

Pros of Apple:
There are a couple of apps that are not on Android
The cool

Facetime is easily replaced by countless other video apps like WhatsApp or insta or ...

Magissa · 02/04/2022 07:25

I swapped from Android to Apple much to my dh horror. He is Android all the way and has been working in the tech industry for many years. I got an iPhone SE last year and love it. I certainly had no major trouble moving over. Took a day or so to get used to but I am so happy with my phone. I also have an iPad and love how they sync seamlessly. Apple Pay is so secure too.
Absolutely no regrets! Smile
Do it OP!

Jewel1968 · 02/04/2022 07:28

I have both (one for work and one personal). Android for me.

Magissa · 02/04/2022 07:32

Having just read the previous post...
None of that has happened to me. My charger is fine 18 months in, my screen has never cracked (though I always use a protector as I did with my Android phones).
When I had my phone few weeks I knocked it into a bucket of water. The phone survived. It has a built in survival system which told me what to do.

Magissa · 02/04/2022 07:37

Slight exaggeration there but it did give me messages to remind me it had been exposed to water and not to charge until it was dry...Blush

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 02/04/2022 07:55

Cons of apple:

I've only had this happen when I've dropped my phone. Now I use screen protectors and I've never had an issue.

Apple battery life is pants

No worse than android? My phone easily lasts all day without the need to charge it and I'm using the camera and mobile data all day long as well as music apps and games.

Less storage for your money on Apple

Depends how much storage you need as to whether this is a problem.

More glitches on Apple*

What glitches are you referring to? I've never noticed any.

The chargers don't last long (apparently apple make as much on selling replacement chargers as they do phones - allegedly)

I agree the genuine Apple chargers are pants but I just buy knock offs from Amazon or eBay and they last years.

skipperjonce · 02/04/2022 08:05

Stick with android. But get a good one. Samsung or equivalent.

I strongly suspect most of the apple fangirl converts posting above switched from a cheap and nasty android. Anything will feel better in comparison!

IMO apple has had its day. Just another bloated, incredibly overpriced, unnecessarily locked down piece of tech these days.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/04/2022 08:12

The only good thing about Apple is that when you get a new phone everything is already loaded as the previous phone but then of nothing changes, what's the point in a new phone?

With an android you log into your Google account and it's all there too. Last phone switch I had transferred everything over with no issue at all.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 02/04/2022 08:22

Why is it on these threads that people can't just say they prefer Androids without insulting Apple users and calling them fangirls or stupid for "falling for the hype".

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 02/04/2022 08:28

Interesting thread. I've been considering the same purely because I can't find a small enough android phone & apple have the SE & the mini & my battery's knackered on my current phone.
Back to the drawing board I think because I don't find my work iphone as intuitive.

FatFucker · 02/04/2022 08:40

My work phone is an android and I just find it so clunky and not user friendly at all. As with PP I yell at it in frustration several times a day!

But suppose it's what you're used to.

DalarnaHorses · 02/04/2022 08:49

I've had both. I hate these threads calling other people's choices rubbish. Both Apple and Android do pretty much the same thing but, sometimes in different ways. It's down to personal preference.

I prefer Android as I like the amount of customisation, but I bought an iPhone for my Mum as it is easier for me to provide 'tech support' over the phone because she can't get in a mess with altering too much. Apple's customer service is also better if you live near an Apple store or even over the phone.

I have a Samsung (s20fe), I love being able to customise the appearance with different launchers. I'm not keen on the "sameness" of iPhones. It has all the apps I need, I use Google pay, WhatsApp video, it has WiFi calling.

DD and DH have iPhones. It's true that most of the teens have iPhones at her school and they like to use Facetime. DH and DD can always track each others locations without an app, whereas it is more complicated with an Android/Apple mix (but is doable).

My Android has expandable memory and a dual Sim, I'm not sure either of those things are available on Apple. I also use OneDrive for my storage, DD says OneDrive is a pain with Apple.

You mention going for new or refurbished. All my phones come from CEX or Game, second hand A grade. They are always immaculate, never had any issues. DD's ipad was refurbished direct from Apple, again no issues.

DalarnaHorses · 02/04/2022 08:56

I'd also add that Android isn't consistent across all devices. Different manufactures overlay their own versions of the OS, so there are variations. Best to try out in store if you can, but they are so customisable, so if you dont like something, it can often be tweaked. Huawei doesn't have Google services, or didn't last time I looked.

Screen protector always on. Still cracked - both kids twice. Pretty expensive to replace 4 screens. They never had this with their androids and neither have I.

Battery life is much worse than android. I guess you're not doing TikToks all day!

Storage is an issue when you need to store TikToks and a gazillion friend vids.

Glitches with audio, screen freeze etc.

Zonder · 02/04/2022 09:16

@DalarnaHorses makes a good point about Android - there's a massive variation from one brand to another. We have Samsung and pixel here. Both excellent.

DalarnaHorses · 02/04/2022 10:57

Android is the operating system. It doesn't have any influence on the build quality of a phone. Different manufacturers will have different quality screens for different price points and it also depends on case and protection.
To my shame I've smashed screens on both Apple and Android. DH is currently sporting an iPhone with a back held together with tape.

One thing I will say and it applies to Apple and Android, glass backs are the stupidest design decision ever. Some designer thought, oh - glass screens get broken often, let's make the backs of phones glass too! Hmm

winnieanddaisy · 02/04/2022 11:57

My son in law gets me a new iPhone in contract every two years . I'm 68 and like the iPhone because to me it's 'idiot proof ' . I don't use all the applications it has mainly because I don't need them . I last updated it over two years ago because the one I have , XS Max is still good so I thought it would be a waste to change it. I always use a screen protector so no damage there . I usually charge it overnight on a trickle charge , so no damage to the battery , and as a PP said , it's in sync with my iPad .

ImAvingOops · 02/04/2022 12:12

What is good about iPhones is I'm that if you buy them from apple and upgrade every 2 years, the trade in value is good, which discounts off your new phone. Only valuable though if you regularly upgrade
