A Pesach/Passover thread

I tried to start one for Purim but didn't get any takers!

If anyone fancies a Pesach chat, I'm up for it.

I just did an order on Sabeny (a very useful grocery & sundries website, if you're not familiar with it - delivers all over the UK) after planning some meals, so I'm feeling weirdly on top of things.

Haven't even thought about cleaning yet.

@ididntevennotice

Is this some kind of inside joke?
Why would it be a joke?
Nnique · 28/03/2022 21:52

What? Why would it be a joke?

(Sorry OP I can’t join in with the chat but I’ll follow along if it’s okay with you as I’m very interested!)

I don't understand it.

celestebellman · 28/03/2022 21:54

Weird response @ididntevennotice

Not Jewish, but happy holiday @EishetChayil

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 28/03/2022 21:54

I’m in!

Nnique · 28/03/2022 21:55

@ididntevennotice maybe learn to look things up if you don’t understand what they are?

ididntevennotice · 28/03/2022 21:57

Oh I'm so so sorry I genuinely didn't know. I had to Google to see why people were reacting like that to me, I'm gonna ask MN to remove my comment but it probably won't happen tonight. I'm so embarrassed now Blush

merrymelodies · 28/03/2022 21:57

I'm not Jewish either but wishing you a Happy Pesach!

ididntevennotice · 28/03/2022 21:58
@ididntevennotice maybe learn to look things up if you don’t understand what they are?
Yes I just have. I don't want to keep retiring to the thread but I honestly didn't mean to be offensive. I had no idea. I'm sorry.

Nnique · 28/03/2022 22:02

Ah @ididntevennotice Flowers

@EishetChayil would you prefer this to be a thread just for Jewish people or is it okay to hang around?

upinaballoon · 28/03/2022 22:05

When is Passover this year? You spoke about cleaning. What do you have to clean? I am guessing the house but I might be wrong. I would look it up now but I don't know how to google in the middle of typing a post.

Pennina · 28/03/2022 22:06

I'm in! Started cleaning a bit and doing a major declutter. I dread it every year though, it is just more work and cooking than I have time for. Ho hum. So much money to go away ..: one day though

AdoraBell · 28/03/2022 22:15

Can I just sit here and learn please? My late mother’s family originated from eastern Europe and fled in the 1800s. My mother wasn’t Jewish so I only have a vague idea of the Pesach traditions.

Happy Pesach to all.

Ricardothesnowman · 28/03/2022 22:15

I'm so looking forward to sedar after 2 years of cancellations due to covid.

EllaDisenchanted · 28/03/2022 22:15

I'm in if you'll have me!although we are cheating this year, I'm going to my parents Grin husband gonna be coming back home for work on chol hamied so still need to clean the car, bedroom, kids room (he works from home in there), and do a partial turnover in kitchen.
And I'll def be helping my mum with the cooking and baking!

EllaDisenchanted · 28/03/2022 22:22

@upinaballoon EVERYTHING!!!! Depends on your personal degree of observance, tradition (sephard/ashkenaz/lubavitch/chasidishetc), family customs (called minhagim), and the shul (synagogue) you attend.
Tricky to answer. But for religious orthodox Jews it's weeeeeks of cleaning and a LOT of work. Spring cleaning on steroids plus cooking and baking with about 10% of your usual ingredients in very bizarre version of your usual kitchen, none of your usual appliances, and a heck of a lot of ingenuity.
Nothing like the feeling of sitting down for seder night though.
Me and my mum used to set full days for cooking once we "turned over" the kitchen. (Made it ready for Pesach). Eg one morning would be for cakes. (Flour less, using potato flour, eight separated and whisked eggs in each) . We'd make roughly 18 of those. It was a production line.

Basically pesach food is potatoes in various combos (including the cakes Grin

It’s the time of year when being a coeliac is a bit easier! Thanks for the link that website,
I’ve spied gluten free matzo meal, I’ve never seen it before, my DH will be delighted!

EllaDisenchanted · 28/03/2022 22:27

Ha!@SpiritInTheNight so true Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 28/03/2022 22:31

I'm
Catholic but really interested in how others celebrate feasts. Why is your kitchen not as it usually is?

Peanutssuck · 28/03/2022 22:45

Following. Is it acceptable to say Chag sameach, or have I got the wrong holiday?

doodleygirl · 28/03/2022 22:48

Now you’ve made me think about it, I was trying to pretend it’s months away Grin

EllaDisenchanted · 29/03/2022 19:43

@doodleygirl as soon as purim is over... bam! It's basically pesach

Pinklimey · 29/03/2022 20:26

I think cleaning everything in preparation for a celebration is really nice. Do you have help?

duvetdayforeveryone · 29/03/2022 20:38

@EishetChayil Thank you for starting this thread :)

I am very excited for Pesach this year Grin
