I tried to start one for Purim but didn't get any takers!

If anyone fancies a Pesach chat, I'm up for it.

I just did an order on Sabeny (a very useful grocery & sundries website, if you're not familiar with it - delivers all over the UK) after planning some meals, so I'm feeling weirdly on top of things.

Haven't even thought about cleaning yet.

thank you for all the info on the pricing regarding food pices

EllaDisenchanted · 01/04/2022 08:31

Yes, we do in my family. We were always taught that it's a mourning tradition to represent the loss of the Beis Hamikdosh.

Bells3032 · 01/04/2022 08:52

@Dilbertian I thought everyone did thst. Egg represents life and the salt water the tears of the Israelites

We watched Prince of Egypt last night, which felt like a watershed moment!

My community Seder has been cancelled and have been toying with the idea of hosting one!

EllaDisenchanted · 01/04/2022 11:52

Bells yeah, egg symbolises the circle of life. Don't think it's a universal custom though.

Davros · 01/04/2022 14:32

I like fried Gefilte fish, not boiled. M&S used to sell it, I don't know if they still do

Gonnagetgoing · 01/04/2022 14:46

Just a question - if you're a liberal Jew (don't attend synagogue much etc) do you still do all the cleaning, get rid of unleavened bread etc?

A close friend of mine since I was 16 does celebrate Passover, does the Seder meal etc but I don't really ask her loads of questions. Her DH is Catholic so of course he does the Easter part too.

I'm Reform (not liberal) but no, I don't clean... However I only eat unleavened bread that week ;)
knitnerd90 · 01/04/2022 15:46

Growing up (I'm stricter now) we would get rid of the bread, put all the pasta flour etc in one cupboard we didn't use, but not scrub the house or change all the dishes.

Dilbertian · 01/04/2022 16:16

When we went to Second Seder at friends' houses they never ate egg in salt water and we really missed it. I assumed for years that it was either something exclusive to First Seder (like Shehechiyanu) or just our family tradition.

What's weird, though, is that we'd debate a million different customs and analyse the heck out of every aspect (Shomrei Shabbat, atheists and Israelis in my extended family!) yet we never discussed the egg in salt water.

upinaballoon · 01/04/2022 17:02

Do you simply boil the egg in salt water and then peel it as usual, or is there more to it than that? Does it taste different?

Why are tinned peaches NOT ok if they are in grape juice, please?

Dilbertian · 01/04/2022 17:14

Each person gets a hard boiled egg cooked in the ordinary way, peeled and served in a bowl with a little salt water. Not very salty, like the sea, but only slightly salty, like tears. It's really nice!

Daleksatemyshed · 01/04/2022 18:33

This is all really interesting reading, and I have a ton of questions, but I fear us Gentiles may be getting in the way of your festival so I will not ask them and leave you all in peace. I hope after all the hard work you all have a wonderful time!

Starting the hungriest part of the year : when you cook for days, the fridge and freezer are heaving but there is nothing to eat... Grin

duvetdayforeveryone · 12/04/2022 17:23

I am waking up very early Friday morning and will do all the cooking then :)

duvetdayforeveryone · 13/04/2022 19:26

Finished all the shopping today. Tomorrow the final clean up and kitchen change over, then Friday is the cook off Grin

Dilbertian · 14/04/2022 17:34

I have a kneidlach question. If I precook and then reheat in the soup, I end up with deceptively fluffy-looking cannonballs. How far ahead of cooking can I mix and shape them, so that I can cook them just before we eat? I'm using the Telma packet mix.

EllaDisenchanted · 15/04/2022 11:45

Freeze them uncooked. Defrost before the meal, and pop them in while you are boiling up the soup. I always cook mine in the soup anyway

EllaDisenchanted · 15/04/2022 11:47

Or roll them in the morning and stick in the fridge. Or even night before. Just matzo meal, eggs, salt, water and a bit of oil, nothing that shouldn't keep overnight in the fridge. It anyway rolls better if you chill it down after mixing.

Don't they make the soup cloudy? I (and my Mum) always cooked them separately in a pot of salted water, and then tater to the soup. The cooking water gets so cloudy it looks like you've poured milk in!

Telma packet mix has rasing agent, so I wasn't sure if I could mix it ahead of time. I've always mixed my own, and thought maybe that where I was going wrong, hence trying a packet.

Anyway. They're rolled.

Everything food-wise is prepped and the dc will lay the table.

I'm having a rest before the marathon begins Grin
