Cradle cap at 3 years

Ilkleymoor · 28/03/2022 20:16

My child still has cradle cap - lots of flakes across their scalp with a yellow tinge.

I'm using dentinox but it's no better.

I tried conditioner on the scalp and then combed it which got a lot of but the second time I did it, some of the scalp was red and sore afterwards. Plus it's all come back.

Any ideas/will it go away by itself?

Both of mine were at school before it went.

FolkSongSweet · 28/03/2022 20:19

My 3.5 year old still has it. But she has loads of hair so you can’t see it. I’ve made no effort to remove it whatsoever, though I guess if it were visible I might try some coconut oil and a vigorous brush. If it’s not obvious then I’d just leave it tbh.

PumpkinCrumble · 28/03/2022 20:22

Mine still have it periodically. I use i coal-tar shampoo and brush it with a Denman hairbrush to lift it.

I think it's keeping some of his hair thinner but that might be me over thinking it.

I don't want to hurt his scalp again and trying to lift it only worked for a short period. It was much worse when he was younger, thick enough to lift itself. So maybe it is getting better, just slowly.

Might try coal tar instead - thanks

We used coconut oil, let it melt in from the warmth of their head then use a nit comb to brush flakes off once softened

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2022 20:30

Both of mine were like this.

Unfortunately they both grew up to have sebhorric dermatitis.

Astraturf · 28/03/2022 20:31

Try aveeno baby wash to wash it then put aveeno baby cream on while it's still damp it greases it up a bit but it cleared my DDs up.

Readyforspring · 28/03/2022 20:33

Dsc at 9 still has it in 1 area. Makes their hair frizzy /like baby fuzz /bed hair at that part.
They use a shampoo from the gp weekly.

RandomDent · 28/03/2022 20:34

My kids get this. Head & Shoulders does the trick.

lobsterz · 28/03/2022 20:36

The best thing I found for it was the Johnsons Baby Hair and Scalp Oil, it's in the newborn cotton scented range. Rub it in and then comb and loads came out and we didn't get any redness. Basically use as they advise olive oil but it's much more effective

WellTidy · 28/03/2022 20:36

My eldest was at school before it went. I stopped using dentinox as it would sting his eyes and made no difference anyway. His hair was really thick and you could only see it if you really separated his hair and looked closely. One hairdresser mistook it for nits.

pastabest · 28/03/2022 20:40

Does it have any black spots in it? If so it could be a fungal version.

We had the same issue and it did make the hair thinner. Hair all grew back once it was resolved though.

saltedcaramelanything · 28/03/2022 20:45

My was exactly the same @Ilkleymoor
Everyone said when he was a baby it would go away on its own, so just left it. At 3yo I realised it was blocking his hair really coming in.

I tried loads, but the only thing that I found to work was olive oil. I got a spray like this - sprayed it on liberally, let it sit 30min or so, and then brush it out. By letting it sit, it softens it so it didn't pull or hurt. Literally 3 times over a week, and it was gone.

Mine still have spots of it at 10, the body shop ginger shampoo has been brilliant

StrictlySinging · 28/03/2022 20:49

DS’s persisted into school. Head and shoulders was the answer.

fruitpastille · 28/03/2022 20:52

I combed it out with oil. I found picking it so compulsive. It did eventually go but now he has quite bad dandruff as a teen.

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/03/2022 20:54

My DS had it all the way til he was 8, head & shoulders was the best thing I found.

BellaPoldark · 28/03/2022 20:57

Regular combing seems to help but keep it gentle if it became red and sore when you tried to lift it.

BertieBotts · 28/03/2022 21:00

I always want to pick it but DS (3) says "Stop! That is my skin and my power! I need it for sleeping!" Bonkers little logic that they have, but he has a point about it being his skin.

You can just leave it if it's not visible through the hair, it will go by itself.

itshappened · 28/03/2022 21:11

My daughter was getting the same thing at that age... I thought maybe it was from swimming, but then noticed her back was dry too. So I changed from using child's farm products to bloom and blossom, and it cleared up completely. Her hair also was thin in patches where the skin was yellow and flakey... it's still thinner but definitely improves all the time.

NewtoHolland · 28/03/2022 21:25

Worth getting it checked that it's not a fungal infection.

Ilkleymoor · 28/03/2022 21:44

Thanks all. Will get it checked by gp in case it's fungal and if not will try some of your tips. Fingers crossed.

My three year old has the same. I second the Johnson's scalp oil mentioned up thread. After a good soak it just brushes off. It's incredibly effective. I wonder if it's caused by shampoo as I find it doesn't tend to happen when I use Child's Farm shampoo on her hair, particularly the tangerine newborn range.

DeePlume · 29/03/2022 10:35

Do you wash the hair with fresh water or just in the bath water? My daughter had cradle cap and I discovered it was because I was using the bath water to rinse her shampoo out, after I started using fresh water from the tap it cleared up!
