I just think that it is a real shame that he behaved in such a manner.
Some people don’t even realise that Will Smith won an Oscar. He has been fighting for more diversity at the Oscars. Now he wins an Oscar his win has been tainted by the punch.
I agree with those who said that she should have gone onstage. He then should have taken the mike and talked about the inappropriateness of the ‘joke’ and how insulting it is to women who are constantly judged by their appearance. In doing so, he would have protected his wife, received support from the audience and viewing public, embarrassed Chris Rock and then to top it all off he would have won the well deserved Oscar

Anon778833 · 28/03/2022 12:14

I don’t condone violence but tbh women are always the butt of jokes about our appearance and I couldn’t help admiring WS for sticking up for his wife.

Will Smith is an idol for so many children. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is still being watched by both teenage boys and girls. What message does this give to them?

I am a massive Will Smith fan, but on this occasion he got it totally wrong. He could have shouted out to Chris Rock from where he was sat and told him to watch his mouth, he could have walked up to him and spoken to him on stage to say he was out of order. Instead he walked up to him and slapped him across the face and then gave a speech about how love makes you do crazy things. What message is he sending out to his millions of child fans?

DigsDilemma · 28/03/2022 12:16

I think Chris Rock deserved a slap. My son has hair loss. It's a horrible thing to deal with without being publicly humiliated as well.

Thatsplentyjack · 28/03/2022 12:16

@Swayingpalmtrees

Jada should not have been there if she was feeling too fragile full stop. The oscars is well known for this kind of stuff. You can not control what other people say or joke about, life isn't like that.
Wow. That's days everything about you really
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 28/03/2022 12:16

I think it's disgusting to mock someone's alopecia - he deserved to be slapped.
You wouldn't mock someone with burns would you?
Why is it ok to mock someone struggling with alopecia who is no doubt distraught.
I feel like crap everytime someone mocks me for being overweight. Trouble is some people just don't know when to stop with the bullshit.

gazprom · 28/03/2022 12:18

all the people here defending a woman who had as a 48 year old an affair with an 18-year old friend of her kid

And a man so up his own fundament and so "cucked" to used the modern parlance that he pedestalises said wife so much that he assaults people who makes a mild reference to a shaved haircut (by choice or otherwise) that is visible to all to see.

And that kids, as they say, is showbusiness

That really says a lot about you. Glad you're so open about it so people can watch what they say around you in case their words end up getting them physically assaulted. I get that you're sensitive about being overweight but I doubt you walk around slapping everyone who makes a comment.

WS unraveled before the world then got incredibly emotional about it. There's something very big going on behind that. A red mist moment triggered..

However, no excuse for what he did.

Jada rocks her look, as did Demi, but I'm sure she can stand up for herself. If it were me I'd have stood up, smiled and taken a bow (but that's me, not her)

I hope all involved in that incident are OK.

NotMeNoNo · 28/03/2022 12:20

They were both bang out of order, one blurted out a stupid rude comment and one reacted without self control. You don't have to pick sides, two wrongs don't make a right.

What's that got to do with it?

Calennig · 28/03/2022 12:21

Comments/joke was inappropriate and hurtful but violence was unacceptable response.

I wonder if he was less being consoled afterward as dealt with/contained - ie pacified down to acceptable pubic behavior - it's possible more likely if it was clear he was on something to people in the room.

It's possible at that point it would have been appropriate to escort him less public and keep him away but perhaps shock and panic played a role there especially with a live event and there were trying to calm everything down.

I do feel for Jada Pinkett Smith - not a great evening for her at all and all down to two men and many other people's acheievements are also overshadowed.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 28/03/2022 12:21

Words are not the same as violence. Justifying Will Smith's violence is giving carte blanche to every abusive man out there. They are quick to blame other people for 'making them hit' them. Chris Rock didn't make Will hit him. Will has to take responsibility for his own actions.

A lot of the comments on this show that we have a long, long, long way to go before people understand about abuse. And before people 'get' that a man who uses his fists/hands/feet when he can't win with his words - isn't a protective man; he's a violent man.

Eyedropeyeflop · 28/03/2022 12:21

Oh god the snowflakes are out in force. Reminds me of a case in school whereby some geeky kid was getting bullied by the year group billy big balls and one day he snapped and literally knocked him out.

He was suspended and the other lad turned into the victim.

Personally it was great to watch and the kid never did get bullied again by this lad. He absolutely did ask for it.

If the ‘comedian’ had been female would you be applauding Will Smith for striking her? WS could have really humiliated CR and shown him up with words and still keep his dignity but maybe he can only think with his fists.

It's ok, next time someone mocks you, just slap them. Seems to be acceptable now.
gazprom · 28/03/2022 12:22

And Jada said 4 days prior that she loved her hair.

Look, I get it, when I first shaved mine I felt a bit exposed, took a while to get used to it.

But then I am not a beautiful hollywood star who has had pretty extreme changing hair styles and extensions throughout my life.

It's keratin. not beauty. And it happens to pretty much half the male population

GeoffLynton · 28/03/2022 12:22

On a more light hearted note, I've watched the clip of Liam Payne being interviewed afterwards, urging us all to 'take the bewdy from it' about 8 times now Grin

okayigetit · 28/03/2022 12:22

@Soul11Soul

He wasn't saying she was ugly, or mannish, or not desired by others etcc

GIJane chooses to shave her head to become more "mannish".That's the whole point.

Jada may have some extreme styles but her current hair style is dictated by a medical condition. She has no choice.

True, but she is choosing to own it, otherwise she would have worn a wig, she has chosen to own her condition which is great, but her husband slapping someone who made a comment about it isn't 'owning it' it's reinforcing the idea that a woman having a shaved head is bad. (No blame to Jada though, I'm sure she would have owned it had Will not got up and embarrassed him and her)
Eyedropeyeflop · 28/03/2022 12:23

@AnnesBrokenSlate

Lol at the assumption this geeky kid was a violent kid. Nar he wasn’t, he was just sick of being tormented and decided to sort the situation out once and for all.

These things are never black and white.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 28/03/2022 12:23

Yy for snowflakes - you mean posters who have worked with DV charities or experienced abuse. Will Smith doesn't need you absolving him of violence. Neither does any other man whose immediate response to any situation is to raise his hands. They don't care what you think and you're just as likely to be a victim of it whether you cheer them on from the sidelines or not.

Cindie943811A · 28/03/2022 12:24

In my defence, my remarks have been taken out of context.
Given the public forum and filming Smith had few options — heckling seldom achieves anything when the agrees or has control of the microphone.
Physical violence is not permissible full stop.
However, I was making the point that Smith was not “out of control” and this incident does not suggest of itself that he would commit domestic violence.
Culturally a face slap is supposed to be humiliating rather than painful. The response in times past would be a challenge to a duel.

Lol I think it's more snowflakey reacting how will smith did to a lame joke than it is being shocked over a physical assault on telly!

Now THAT would be good TV.
