@alondra, I have to take issue with your dismissal of the effects that alopicia can have on women, I have a close family member who has suffered with this since she was 12, it has caused years of severe depression, unhappiness, anxiety and frankly her life has been absolutly miserable at times. For a woman to be bald in our society is very very hard. (JPS has the very good fortune to look stunning, not every woman can 'rock' a bald look) Good wigs cost a huge amount of money and a cheap wigs look exactly that!

No, its not a 'serious illness' but it is by and large a bloody awful one with no end in sight for the woman suffering it.

@Newtonred

On a different note what is with these dresses that just stop short of exposing the nether regions (and quite often do). Some of them must literally be taped down the groin or even further in order to stay in place
I agree, it might be my age, but my first thought is always “how do they manage to have a wee” Do they have sworn to secrecy interns positioned in the ladies all night to hold up the dresses, re tape the modesty tape, make sure the trains aren’t adorned with scraps of toilet paper……
ChickenStripper · 28/03/2022 10:03

It's not her illness/condition- he is sensitive because of the fact that Jada has an extra marital social life and he's been made to look pussy whipped. Chris Rock was his outlet for that anger.

jungledoc · 28/03/2022 10:04

@ChickenStripper agree

Alondra · 28/03/2022 10:05

I don't know how many of you saw the interaction between Wanda Sykes and Samuel L Jackson. She was poking fun at him and laughing at his own expense. Nothing happened. It's the Oscars.

Frankly those of you who still think what Will did is ok, you are not only condoning violence but agreeing that a man can violently act on your behalf whether you agree or not.

Newrunner29 · 28/03/2022 10:06

@LetHimHaveIt

'Would we be talking about the Oscar’s if this hasn’t have happened Would the Oscar’s be in the headlines?

No!

It was becoming stale and out of date

Now - we are talking about it, and leading headline

That is why.'

You are talking abject nonsense. Oscar winners - especially the 'Big Five' - are always headline news. Always.

Precisely no-one in their right mind, would think an onstage smack-down between two black men, was a good idea 'to boost ratings'. No-one in their right mind would think Chris Rock and Will Smith agreed beforehand, to such a career-damaging set-up.

I don't for a minute think you're in PR, unless it's in the same way my next-door-neighbour who does the Facebook page for her dad's handyman business and her own MLM bollocks, thinks she's 'in marketing'.

Your last paragraph made me laugh so much! 😆
mistyoak · 28/03/2022 10:06

Such a crap joke.

CR also took a pop at JPS a few years ago. Don’t think he likes women.

Will embarrassed himself and was totally OTT. Shouldn’t have blamed it on love!

Bedsheets4knickers · 28/03/2022 10:07

I think their marriage has had so much controversy, brought on by themselves. I don't think W.Smith really heard the full extent of the joke and was just playing his part laughing along , he then realised and felt he had to justify his marriage , once he sat back down he was shouting but looked uncomfortable doing so.

I'm trying to figure out in my own head if being compared to GI jane is an insult or praise . She's pretty fucking cool .
What matters is her losing her hair has hurt her and making fun of it on any scale is not ok .

IsitFridayyet21 · 28/03/2022 10:08

It's really shocking. Chris Rock went too far. Will overreacted.

I get the impression Chris Rock isn't well liked in the celebrity circle. I think Will might get 'cancelled' now.

I did feel sorry for Chris though, that must have been very shocking to have been smacked and no doubt he wouldn't have been able to process quite what had happened. He will hopefully consider his 'jokes' more carefully in future.

bigyellowTpot · 28/03/2022 10:08

@Jobsharenightmare yes defo a performance thats what I thought too, Will Smith will never win an Oscar for that slap, seen more realistic slaps on WWE wrestling 🤣.

Bedsheets4knickers · 28/03/2022 10:09

@unname

This is Will Smith’s 3rd best actor nomination and he actually won an Academy Award tonight. He is definitely a good enough actor to pull off a stupid prank.

Again, not saying that’s what happened but it is certainly possible.

I doubt Chris Rock would allow himself that humiliation.
guiltyregrets · 28/03/2022 10:11

Urgh can't stand Chris rock, he's definitely had that coming to him. He fully deserved that slap.

SueSaid · 28/03/2022 10:11

Exactly.
52andblue · 28/03/2022 10:12

@overnightangel

Pair of self-inportant arseholes so not a surprise to see them acting as such, with a nice dollop of misogyny and toxic masculinity thrown in
I agree. I'd add in Disablism too. If it was 'staged then it got well out of hand. No one comes out of this well.

he is always getting ribbed for their open marriage

and then that same man violently acts on the woman ...how many women are there who have been attacked and murdered by men in the name of love?
VampireMoney · 28/03/2022 10:13

The thing about the joke, he compared her to GI Jane, an absolutely gorgeous, strong, incredible woman. Demi Moore was iconic in that role, so beautiful. Jada could have taken that as a compliment, said 'thankyou' and stroked her head or something like that, empowered all the women out there with alopecia.

Honestly (personally) that's how I'd have reacted to his 'joke' and probably said call my agent get me in talks for the roll.

The fact she only rolled her eyes means it probably didn't even register as an insult.

Chris Rock is an idiot but that was tame by his standards.

notanotheroneagain · 28/03/2022 10:14

@jungledoc

"To top it off, Will said his mum was abused all the time by his dad, and he always regretted not being able to defend her. He was obviously offended by a man bullying his wife."

So it's ok he resorted to violence because his dad was violent to his mother?

My point is that there is a power difference at play between women and men. Probably in his mind will feels that Chris should take on someone his own size.
gazprom · 28/03/2022 10:15

Chris Rock has a stellar reputation in comedy circles.

He also made a film about the toxicity in the Black hair industry after his daughter asked him about straightening.

It's called (geddit) Good Hair.

Also, (and I say this as a bald woman myself) there isn't anything inherently terrible about looking like GI Jane. I'm trying, really am, but can't see it.

Torunette · 28/03/2022 10:15

@trancepants

What stood out to me about the commercial break footage is that while she's not in shot most of the time, it appears that Jada is just sitting there throughout. I think what Rock said about her was utterly horrible but in terms of international attention it was a moment that would have made almost no impact unless she had chosen to speak about it later. By Will acting as he did, it's now front and centre worldwide and is something that will always be attached to her. Will took away her agency. Says, 'keep my wife's name out of your mouth,' making her identity primarily about her relationship to him. it's not, 'you hurt Jada' it's 'you insult me though my wife.' He made her unhappiness into something about him. He's getting comforted in the break, while she is largely left sitting there.

It's absolute red fucking flags all over the place. She is hurt but suddenly he's both a hero and a victim because of his own rage. Nasty fucking man.

This.

There have been stories about Will Smith having issues about Jada's career successes (notably Gotham) for some time.

And now we have this. Instead of the story being "Brave Jada hurt by Oscar hair loss joke" with a picture of her looking sad but dignified, and an opportunity for her to discuss appearence expectations on her red table show, we have "Smith punches Rock" .

He's totally taken the narrative from her. She now can't talk about her reaction to Rock's joke as the main issue, the onus will all be on her response to Will's behaviour.

He's made her a victim, he's pinned her into a narrative that has him at the centre (despite the joke being about her), he's silenced her at the same time, and he's exploded the story to boot.

Tbh, if this is his modus operandi, I understand why she has emotional entanglements with others.

Absolutely That was a tame joke. He was laughing at the joke initially but his wife was angry He was probably concerned that Chris Rock would expose more about his wife’s entanglements. Will and Jada Smith have a very strange relationship. They are rumoured to have an open relationship . He sleeps with women and men and so does he He has made a fool of himself which is a shame as he won an Oscar Will Smith has gone down in my estimation
okayigetit · 28/03/2022 10:16

I can't believe people are defending Will smith assaulting Chris rock live on television because he made a G I Jane joke... Chris was employed to present the show, ofcourse there's going to be jokes about people in the audience.. okay the joke wasn't very funny but that level of anger and aggression was not warranted at all! G I Jane is hot anyway.. not like he said Jada was shit and ugly

SantaCarlaCalifornia · 28/03/2022 10:17

I just posted this on the other thread, but it works here too -

I'm shocked at the number of apologists for male violence here.

Contrary to popular belief, words (even really bad and rude ones) aren't literal violence.
It's a really slippery slope to say that it's OK to be violent because someone has offended you, and absolutely used by many men who beat their wives while feeling justified about it.

Figgygal · 28/03/2022 10:19

I just don't understand why he would embarrass himself so publicly over something that was a pretty tame joke actually
When he actually laughed first
Let himself down massively

Excellent memes this morning

52andblue · 28/03/2022 10:22

@Torunette - that's a really thoughtful take on it & I think you're 100% correct.
