How many houses between you and a train line not to hear it?

Looking to relocate, but there isnt much up for sale.
A decent looking house has just come up for sale, but it's about 100m from a train line. About 2 commuter trains an hour, from what we can tell, plus freight.
The set up would be:train tracks, garden, house, road, potential house. How much would that put you off a house? How much do you think we would hear/feel?
I've lived closer to a much busier train line before (Bristol-London mainline) and got used to ut. More wondering if we'd be stuck with a lemon! The other possibility is 200k more (50%), would be a real stretch, and looks out onto a massive pylon......
All thoughts welcome.

Two trains an hour wouldn't bother me tbh. I think you'd tune it out after a while anyway. It might attract a bit of a discount but you benefit from that when buying as much as you are disadvantaged when selling.

Hugasauras · 25/03/2022 19:38

We have one at the bottom of the garden, down an embankment and we have thick tree coverage between us and the line. I don't even notice anymore but it's definitely not loud enough to disturb us. If you're in the garden obviously it's a bit louder but only lasts a few seconds.

I actually love hearing the last train of night go past, I listen out for it Blush There's something oddly comforting about it. I much prefer it to road noise.

Watto1 · 25/03/2022 19:40

I’d certainly prefer a train track to a pylon! I love hearing the trains going by.

Christienne · 25/03/2022 19:41

That wouldn’t bother me.

This!

If it’s really a choice between train and 200k extra debt and a pylon you’d be mad not to buy the train one!

I lived about 50m from train tracks for 20 years. You completely get used to it. There were no houses between ours & the tracks, just a field.

I briefly lived near a railway yard, I wouldn't recommend that - the trains being moved around in the middle of the night make the most awful metallic screeching sound. They probably do it in the daytime too but it's less obvious. It woke me up every night.

orangeisthenewpuce · 25/03/2022 19:48

Used to live in a house that had a very busy train line at the bottom of the not very big garden. It was the London to Edinburgh line so the trains went really fast. Horrendous for the first few months then got so used to it we didn't even hear them.

sweetbellyhigh · 25/03/2022 19:52

How many houses?

1000?

RewildingAmbridge · 25/03/2022 19:56

We live about a third of a mile from our local station (few hundred houses is guess,) and at night in the summer when the windows are open I can hear the trains in the distance. It's not intrusive and actually quite pleasant to hear.

Viviennethebeautiful · 25/03/2022 19:56

Train line at bottom of average length garden. Trains every 10 mins. Mild hum in garden no noise in house. Used at night for one or two freight trains which you can hear but very soothing.
Train station at each end of my road into a city. House value enhanced by this

EatSleepReplete · 25/03/2022 19:57

The one near us had passenger trains & also the very long quarry trains on it. The quarry trains mostly went past at night. Barely ever noticed them.

KeepingAnOpenMind · 25/03/2022 19:58

I had a train line at the front of my garden but I quite liked it. Reminded me of the Railway Children. Train lines are fine but not busy roads or under flight paths.

LosingMySh1t · 25/03/2022 19:59

Lived a stones throw from the train track at the end of my garden for 25 years. You honestly don't hear it after a while.
I'd much prefer a train track to pylons.

Traumdeuter · 25/03/2022 20:02

The only thing to be wary of would be engineering work occasionally - a lot louder but for a limited period. You get used to the regular train noise and I love watching them go past.

RedWhiteOrBlue · 25/03/2022 20:04

A month of living with a rail track at the end of the garden and you just do not notice it anymore.

Clymene · 25/03/2022 20:04

There is road, house, road, house between us and the train line. The only time I really hear it / notice is in the very early hours - 5/6am. That said, we live very close to the station so the trains are travelling very slowly

TracyMosby · 25/03/2022 20:06

Im a mile away from the train line. Twice a day train. I hear the horn thats all.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 25/03/2022 20:08

There's a train track at the bottom of our road down an embankment, the train station is a few minutes walk so there are quite a few trains coming and going, freight trains through the night and I don't even realise the trains go past now, it's only when family come and say oh is that a train? That i actually properly hear them. The only thing that does annoy me is when they work on the tracks through the night, the metal makes a right noise!

Tonsiltrouble · 25/03/2022 20:11

It totally depends on the line and the weather and the area. We are a mile or so from the train line and sometimes I hear it in the distance, especially on hot still nights. We have a moderately busy road at the end of our garden. It’s sometimes noisy and annoying but the houses across the street don’t hear it so I think you’ll be ok.

I’d pick a train line over a pylon a hundred times over though.

OrlandointheWilderness · 25/03/2022 20:11

My grandparent live next to a busy train track - trains rundown to kings cross every 15 mins plus more. They have an 80 foot garden but you can't really hear it at all - it's never been particularly noticeable once you are used to it! And in the plus side they've had the flying Scotsman go past a few times

Hasselhoffsheadband · 25/03/2022 20:11

I live one row of houses from a fairly busy and fast train line - I quite like it, it's kind of comforting, the normality of it? The noise doesn't bother me at all.

Myfanwyprice · 25/03/2022 20:13

In our previous house the train line was at the end of the garden, within a couple of weeks we barely noticed the trains. We now live half a mile away from it, and there are a lot of houses plus an A road between us, but we still hear the signal noise when the trains go through the station.

I visit a friend who lives near a train line and I love the train at night and hearing the early trains when I'm half awake. Like you I find it a really comforting sound.
rwalker · 25/03/2022 20:14

Freight train can be VERY noisy you would hear them

Hugasauras · 25/03/2022 20:15

We also get steam trains going past occasionally, and the noise they make is wonderful. DD gets extremely excited if we are out in the garden when one goes past!
