The quality of Primark clothing

ouch321 · 25/03/2022 17:20

I bought a lot of their clothes say 10 years back but found the quality was lacking eg the seams would be in the wrong place on jeans legs or tops would shrink or go baggy in the wash etc.

I've only used them for socks/tights/night-shirts etc in the years since then.

So for people who used them in the past and who still shop there now, has the quality gone up or down or remained much the same over the years? (And yes I do realise they are a budget provider.)

Only asking as there's now a huge one near me with lots of stuff that looks nice at a glance but just wondering if the quality is still an issue.

And all the shops near me - River Island, Topshop, Warehouse- have closed over the years so options for age 30s females are lacking...

Primark clothes have always been crap quality unfortunately. But considering the fact that they're made by child slaves in Asia and sold dirt cheap I think you'd expect them to not be good quality.

lapasion · 25/03/2022 17:39

The quality varies. I certainly have things from there that have lasted for years. It’s certainly improving and I think it’s on par with a lot of other high street stores.

Mooloolabababy · 25/03/2022 17:44

Quality is still not that great still, but tbh I have found that the quality of clothing from most retailers has gone downhill, I'm not happy about recent purchases from next, oasis or vans which all cost a fair bit more than primark but have bobbled straight away after 2-3 washes, whereas years ago they would have lasted for years.

Not saying its right but lots of expensive clothes are made there too, sadly price doesn't give assurance that no one has been exploited in the supply chain.

I find primark okay for some stuff like leggings and children's clothes, but a lot doesn't wash well and is wasteful as it's ill fitting and falls apart after a while. I think it depends what size you are as to whether seams are in the right place, it seems larger sizes are worse as they must just scale them up without thought to how proportions differ. Prices are creeping up as well, I actually like the quality of TU clothing if looking for an affordable alternative.

miltonj · 25/03/2022 17:47

Varies so much! I've got some things from there that I've had for years, that's still going strong and get compliments on. And then there's stuff that I buy and lasts a couple of months.

That's bullshit
Hoppinggreen · 25/03/2022 17:49

Some of the t shirts are £1.50 of course it’s crappy quality

MaverickSnoopy · 25/03/2022 17:51

If I buy something in Primark its because I'm skint and need new clothes. I don't expect them to last and tend to only buy filer pieces eg a top, summer cardigan or shoes. I'd assume they'd not last until the next season. I get my pjs there as well as M&S. They last about the same as each other, M&S slightly longer.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/03/2022 17:54

I don't think it's much different the H&M basic range or basic New Look range. I worked there back in the day and still have some clothes which are coming up 20 years old. Don't wear regularly and don't tumble dry but they've lasted.
Stuff is always hit and miss in there. I don't think their shoes last though.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/03/2022 17:54

DH swears by their black jeans though

BakewellGin1 · 25/03/2022 17:55

I always buy winter boots there and I still have some which are at least three years old...
Also go for Pjs, jeans, kids clothing (some of which washes better then Next or M&S clothing)
Tops for work are ideal but I find they make the arms and shoulders super tight regardless of size I buy so a little inconsistent.

I buy longline plain coloured t-shirts. Most basic t-shirts from other places are too short. Wear weekly and they last a outlet if years. Hoodie similar. Only jeans that fit dh properly.

HeDidWhattt · 25/03/2022 17:56

Primark was rubbish, but now so are all the other stores but because it’s cheaper it now seems better quality for the money!!!

cluecu · 25/03/2022 18:09

I have worked quite closely with people in the sustainability / ethical clothing / supply chain industry and they have told me that of the high street brands, primark and h and m are the best in terms of their policies and processes. I am no expert and I don't know if that still means they are bad but they aren't bad ^because they are cheap. Whereas others are bad ^and less cheap, the extra money isn't getting passed down and they're less concerned from what I could gather.

CaptainPovey · 25/03/2022 18:15

Men's polo shirts are good quality IMO and they wash well

Coffeencrochet · 25/03/2022 18:21

I always get my long sleeved tops from Primark, mostly to wear under short sleeved/sleeveless dresses. They do the job and I've found some of my more recent purchases are better in quality than what my older ones (4+ years) were originally.
I used to shop there a lot in my early 20s but now just go for DCs clothes, or bits and bobs like socks, accessories etc.

Gowithme · 25/03/2022 18:31

I love Primark and the stuff lasts me years (unlike DH who seems to go through everything in a very short time - especially necks on cheap t-shirts, stretched v.quickly). I don't think the quality has got any better but I think other places cost a lot more but often aren't any better.

Worldgonecrazy · 25/03/2022 18:34

I get a lot of the basics and they last as long as basics from M&S etc. Some of the more high end fashion stuff is low quality but probably not much difference to other High Street shops.

I would never have considered shopping in Primark ten years ago but the company have worked hard to make it a much more pleasant customer experience.

PAFMO · 25/03/2022 18:42

In fairness, I've got knitwear from Banana Republic and Hush that's worse quality. It is what it is. It's cheap and it's not going to last a lifetime.

Handsnotwands · 25/03/2022 18:44

I’ve got a few reallllly old primark things, like 10 years old

I think they vary. The things I’m thinking of are some wide leg black work trousers (not stretchy) and a few cotton dresses. I also have a long sleeve t shirt which must’ve been an anomaly as it’s been worn at least weekly for a decade. More recent ones have been shit

Mamapep · 25/03/2022 18:44

No. Primark is rubbish.

BookkeeperBobby · 25/03/2022 18:53

It's hit and miss but no more so than other places. I got a couple of blazers last year that don't look worn at all now, also longer line t shirts and hoodies I've had for years are still going strong. The sportswear and beach stuff is decent too. I wouldn't buy shoes there and sadly my pleather skirt looks a disaster but thinking about it that's the only thing from Primark that's gone wrong, and even it was okay for about a year or so. I've had a couple of jumpers bobble but then I've also had that from m&s and they were a lot more expensive! Also they don't use plastic bags at all and they don't charge you for paper bags. It's a decent enough shop really.

FabFitFifties · 25/03/2022 19:14

I've had nice t-shirts and jackets for my son (child) pre covid. I bought a couple of shirts for myself that split straight away at the arm pit/shoulder area, and frayed at seams. My niece bought me lovely satin type pj bottoms and matching robe, with some co-ordinating vests. The vests were OK, but the bottoms and robe have washed fab, and are about 3 years old. I'm obviously not a regular, but my limited experience says women's clothes very variable, but kids stuff better.

Manekinek0 · 25/03/2022 19:19

Most of it is terrible quality. But then I don't think other high street stores provide anything better. The clothes in next etc are on the same level as Primark.

I mainly buy in charity shops, get the odd pair of jeans off ebay/vinted and then very rarely I splash out on something from MaxMara. Luckily I like vintage clothes.
