Best time of year to visit Eden Project?

TooWeirdToLiveTooRareToDie · 25/03/2022 16:23

My DD is really into plants and gardening so I’d like to take her to the Eden Project as I’ve never been either.

I was thinking of going in the Easter break but just wondered how much flora we’d be able to see at this time of year?

It’s a long way for us so I’d like maximise and go at the best time of year.

Have a look at the trip advisor review for Easter time & see posters photos.

www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g10501470-d2233181-Reviews-Eden_Project-Bodelva_Cornwall_England.html

It was summer when we went. So, so busy and it’s so hot in there we didn’t really see the plants as we were so busy shuffle, shuffle, shuffling along as fast as we could to try and get out ASAP! I’d wanted to go since it opened, I was pretty disappointed and far preferred the Lost gardens of Heligan, which was stunning in summer when we went.

parrotonmyshoulder · 25/03/2022 18:44

It’s never been busy when we’ve been. Easter, October, Christmas, February. There are a lot of idiotic reviews on trip advisor, bemoaning the lack of playgrounds and having too many plants.

leavingtime · 25/03/2022 18:44

Quite honestly after having been there and not being impressed in the slightest, I think you'd see better flora in a good garden centre. Probably their cafe/restaurant would be cleaner/better run/cheaper too.

Or find National Garden Scheme gardens which are open to the public. There should be a booklet in local garden centres.

Go to Heligan instead , much nicer.

HemanOrSheRa · 25/03/2022 18:45

I second The Lost Gardens Of Heligan. Much better than the Eden project.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 25/03/2022 18:52

I would suggest June to September. We went in May and things were just starting to bud. I would also advise a cool day to visit. It gets very hot in the biodomes and there can be a lot of outdoor walking too.
Definitely check out Heligan as well.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/03/2022 19:28

Eden was fab 20 years ago. It was so groundbreaking and focused on reusable, recycling element. Now it’s very tired and shabby. Things haven’t been maintained. It costs too much to go. It’s not worth it. The ethos changed and it’s not so much about the “project” anymore.

Lost gardens are far far better for a plant enthusiast. Or Trebar gardens. Also Pineatum (sp) in St Austell as well.

Tidypidy · 25/03/2022 20:15

If you're a member of National Trust, there are lots of lovely gardens to visit- especially in Cornwall.

Glendaruel · 25/03/2022 20:19

Wish I had gone to heligan instead. Over priced, lots of people and interactive s broken. We did stay in land pod at the yha which was good.

Ganymedemoon · 25/03/2022 20:22

I agree with many pp. The Eden project was a big disappointment. Heligan however is just beautiful! Especially so in Spring. Also lots of NT properties with lovely gardens. I would not bother with Eden.

Isonthecase · 25/03/2022 20:28

We loved it! We went just after Christmas and used the national lottery offer to get tickets so it was an absolute bargain and it was glorious being in the domes when it was cold outside and having a hot chocolate in the Italian style cafe. There's a funny smoke puffer thing in one of the other buildings that captivated the kids for hours too. Unfortunately the offer has ended now and it's probably too late notice to go for their open week as it ends Sunday but I'd keep an eye out for it running next year.

crackofdoom · 25/03/2022 20:30

The spring bulbs will be out at this time of year, which is nice. The biomes are the same all year round.

Zog14 · 25/03/2022 20:41

Love Eden, been going for 5 years with kids. We go October, when we are down for Scottish half term. A ticket gets you in free for a year, so I think it’s ok value if you can go more than once.
Love Cornwall in October, get the last of the summer sun.

Another shout out for Heligan. We went it’s first year and often thereafter, just gets lovelier and lovelier. We’re fortunate to be well travelled and it’s one of the few places that has exceeded our expectations.

Eden is spectacular, though. Would avoid school holidays. Nightmare.

Nillynally · 25/03/2022 20:44

Most gardens of heligan was much better IMO!

MissMarpleRocks · 25/03/2022 20:51

Went to Eden & Heligan last year. Heligan was beautiful. Stunning.

ffscovid · 25/03/2022 21:22

Eden Project is amazing and is great all year round. Obviously different plants bloom or look interesting at different times of the year but each season brings something different.
The outside bits are obviously best in spring or summer but autumn is pretty too.
The biomes are great year-round. High summer is my least favourite time as it's so busy and the heat & humidity is a bit much.
Winter is stunning and a real treat to see it all in the dark when they do late night opening for the Christmas period (go earlier in the day to see it in daylight then whizz around again after dusk to enjoy the pretty lights and music).

We're lucky enough to live fairly close by so visit a lot.

Thanks for all the replies, I’m a bit surprised that it’s not considered very good anymore. Should have got there years ago!

We are planning on staying down so the Lost Gardens are already on the list but again, I’m not sure it’s the best time of year. I’ll check out recent tripadviser reviews.

Thanks for the other suggestions too @DobbyTheHouseElk.

@Tidypidy We are NT members too, so will look out for places nearby.

I’m afraid I found it really boring.

intwrferingma · 25/03/2022 21:30

Cornish gardens which are way better if it's actual plants your daughter enjoys:
Lamorren
Glendurgan
Trebah
Personally, as a Cornish resident though I've had enough of Eden and it's arrogant, grant grabbing founder!

Piper22 · 25/03/2022 21:32

Eden project is the worst. So dull and boring. Don’t bother

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 25/03/2022 21:32

I've been visiting regularly since it opened, as I used to work there & only live down the road.
The biomes are incredible, but it doesn't matter what time of year you visit, just avoid the crowds! Outside is meh, loads of other better spring & summer gardens in Cornwall.

Nelliephant1 · 25/03/2022 21:35

There isn't one it's really not worth visiting at any time of the year. It's waste of time and money.

ButtockUp · 25/03/2022 22:12

Been twice.
First time was one year after it opened ( a bit bare.)

Second time was before Covid hit. ( Very lush.)

It really doesn't matter when you go as it's subtropical and in enclosed bio domes.

Outside might not be clement but I didn't rate the outside ... silly giant insect models on grubby land.

Best place was Trebah. Loved it so much on our last holiday , we went twice.

Xpologog · 25/03/2022 23:01

Most overrated place I’ve ever visited, very rude staff too. Overpriced. I could have seen plants just as interesting in a park.
Lots of better places to visit.
