MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/03/2022 07:56

we now have a local op with plastic recycling
we have other usual recycling, cardboard, glass
we pay for garden waste collection
we do not have a food waste recycling so that would help even more
our landfill bin has barely anything in it, dog poo is a large culprit, that and vegetable peelings, tea bags

there are only 2 of us in the house now so we are just getting used to it

It's pretty lucky that we don't fill it actually since we both have ADHD and sometimes forget to put it out (meaning it doesn't get emptied for 4 weeks). Once we forgot to put it out twice in a row so it didn't get emptied for 6 weeks. It was definitely full then Blush

@thatweirdhippygirl

Didn’t mean to sound holier than thou, sorry! 😂

I did say I know these things aren’t for everyone. I personally hate the reusable sanitary stuff and usually skip sugar pills so I don’t have to have a period 😂

@thatweirdhippygirl - I was joking a bit about the holier stuff!

I do think supermarkets and shops are bloody awful/useless re packaging. When i was young (in 70's, child) Safeways had unpackaged fruit and veg and you had your fruit and veg shop. Safeways also had paper bags rather than plastic ones. You had a fishmonger (long gone), baker etc. You could also take back empty bottles for 10p money back!

Thesearmsofmine · 25/03/2022 16:05

I wish there were more options in our local are. I remember in my 80’s when I was small that you could buy most fruit and veg loose and my mum also used to go to a shop called weigh n save which sold everything loose like spices etc and it was low cost. We need something like that now as the majority of refill shops are priced at the higher end of the scale.

Leftbutcameback · 25/03/2022 16:07

@deadlanguage I think you live in the same town as me! (Waves)

Babyroobs · 25/03/2022 16:35

Until a few months ago, we always had an overflowing black bin, sometimes to the point where we would have to use my dads black bin too. then our local Coop started recycling soft plastic and it has made a huge difference. I am embarrassed how much plastic packed foodstuffs we buy but it just seems like everything comes in plastic.

Treqil · 25/03/2022 16:42

Quite full, I wish tesco would sell things in less packaging, always a ridiculous amount of plastic and I wish/my local area would have more options for what they take in the recycling bin, as its a bit limited.

elliejjtiny · 25/03/2022 16:46

Household of 7, including 2 older dc in nappies at night. We have 2 bins that are emptied every 3 weeks. Our bins are always full to the brim.

Zazdar · 25/03/2022 16:52

Ours is emptied every three weeks and is rarely more than a quarter full.

hedgehogger1 · 25/03/2022 18:23

Mine is always full of Guinea pig cleaning outs. I wish they'd not wee on the hay they're meant to eat

Ululavit · 25/03/2022 18:37

I reduced a lot by getting milk delivered in glass bottles, not plastic from the supermarket.

But my local Superdrug had just stopped taking pill blister packs, and I can’t put meat or fish plastic packaging out for recycling no even if I’ve rinsed it, as the foxes smell them and scatter them all over the road from the open recycling crate.

LadyDanburysCane · 25/03/2022 18:42

Our “landfill” bin is emptied fortnightly. I generally only bother with it monthly and even then it’s only half full most of the time.

My single neighbour in the other hand often has trouble shutting the lid in hers - she refuses to use the food, plastic or glass recycling but does use the paper recycling bin.

Natsku · 25/03/2022 18:54

I wish we could pay for glass collection, going to the bottle bank is so annoying and they are usually already overflowing.

The UK ought to bring in (bring back?) bottle deposits so you get paid for recycling your bottles instead of paying for glass collection. That's one thing that gets recycled very well in my country, even when people drink in the park and leave their bottles and cans lying around, along comes a granny or a couple of children to pick them all up to take to the shop for the deposit money!

FOJN · 25/03/2022 20:03

I put one 30L rubbish bag in my landfill bin once every three weeks, that's how often it's emptied. We have a recycling bag for plastics and a box for cardboard and glass. We also have a food waste caddy, mine is usually filled with veg peelings and tea bags. We have to pay extra for our garden waste bin.

MinglingFlamingo · 25/03/2022 20:07

We have 1/2 - 1 (depending on the week) bin liner of rubbish sent to landfill a week. The rest is recycled. We have 2 large bags of cans and plastic, 2 of the same bags for paper and the same again for cardboard. One large storage box full of jars and bottles. Our supermarket has started recycling shrink wrap and plastic bags. Local pharmacy recycles blister pack tablet things.
We are a family of 3

MinglingFlamingo · 25/03/2022 20:09

Oh fruit and veg peel & tea bags goes in the compost. Also collect eggshells for mum to use in the garden

A580Hojas · 25/03/2022 20:14

We are a family of 3 adults, 2 of us wfh most of the time. We have a small wheelie for non recyclable waste and it is never more than half full every two weeks. We compost everything we can and sort our recycling to the max. I still feel bad about sending the amount we do to landfill.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 25/03/2022 20:24

Ours is always full - our local council don't allow us to separate food waste (it has to go in the black bin) and a lot of plastics aren't recyclable. We also have three indoor cats so a lot of the waste is cat litter as they only collect our (separate, paid for) brown bins in summer, and even then it's only once a month Hmm

It also doesn't help that our bins go out on our back street, and the council won't collect if there's a vehicle blocking the road, so both bins and recycling often go a month without being emptied.

MinglingFlamingo · 25/03/2022 20:51

Should add that rubbish is once a week recycling is once a fortnight

I'm very pleased and surprised that my council is better than many on this thread they are normally very behind the times

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 25/03/2022 21:18

We have the new skinny landfill bins - food waste separately collected and local Tesco does soft plastics, glass goes to bottle bank, most plastics, card etc and tetra packs into recycling bin. I forgot to put my grey bin out a few weeks ago and was worried we'd struggle with it for another two weeks, but it was only just full at the next collection after 4 weeks worth. Was quite chuffed given we are 5 people

QuebecBagnet · 25/03/2022 21:19

We don’t have a landfill bin at all. Anything which can’t be recycled goes to a special power plant and is used for fuel, all of it.

Zazdar · 25/03/2022 22:39

I think they are behind the times. Progressive councils have attempted to reduce landfill by reducing the frequency of general waste collections and increasing the frequency of recycling collections.

I meant more in terms of the broad range of items which could be recycled

Also in my county very little if any rubbish actually goes to landfill. Instead it's incinerated and From what I understand this is then turned into electricity

Hebeee · 25/03/2022 23:00

Where we live there are no wheelie bins - the council provides a food caddy/liners which are collected weekly, recycling bags which are collected fortnightly (no glass, just plastics, paper, card etc) and we have to provide our own black bags for landfill waste (alternate fortnightly collection to recycling). Glass is taken to the bottle bank and we compost garden waste, although that can be collected if required.

There is a maximum limit of three black bags per fortnight, no maximum recycling.

We are a family of two and put out one black landfill waste bag per fortnight, three recycling bags per fortnight and probably a half-full food caddy weekly.

Later in the year this is changing to landfill bags collected every three weeks, recycling and food waste every week, plus glass collection is being introduced.

Readyforspring · 25/03/2022 23:29

Always full and occasional tip run too. Emptied fortnightly

Recyclables only allow cardboard. Paper, cans, plastic bottles.
No packs from like fruit etc its ridiculous.

General waste always heavy. Veg peelings, nappies etc. (landlord doesn't allow compost bin due to rat issuee with previous tenants)

AlwaysLatte · 25/03/2022 23:37

Not that full as we compost all the food scraps and recycle what we can. But our council doesn't take plastic wrapping or some hard plastics, so we have some of that for the refuse bin.
