"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Odilla · 24/03/2022 00:06

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

@Riseholme

My dsis mil lived in Yorkshire. She had a Yorkshire friend with a hairdressing salon called Maison Alice pronounced in a distinctly non french accent Mares-son Aliss.

One day dsis heard this conversation.

Eee Alice tha makes the best scones in Yorkshire.
Aye Nancy but nobody can beat tha sponge cake.

They know how to take a compliment in Yorkshire!

Nobody and I mean NOBODY in here in Yorkshire says "tha" I can assure you with 100% confidence. That was exaggerated by whoever told you, I'm afraid
SpringsSprung · 26/03/2022 00:04

@Nomoresmoresthensnores

You really can't beat Yorkshire Tea though can you. It really is the only decent cuppa.

For that reason alone I can let it slide

(I also like Whippets but I'm not sure they're indigenous...but then when you think about it..neither is tea... where are those Yorkshire tea plantations ey?)

I live next to the Yorkshire tea factory and cannot stand the stuff! I love every other brand of tea but that. I feel like a traitor!

Cute little fact - on the front of the factory, they have a giant orange teapot with the time on it and every day at 11am a whistle blows and the teapot tips up 🫖 🟠 Staff tea break apparently

bigyellowTpot · 26/03/2022 00:06

@SpringsSprung apart from Seth Armstrong off emmerdale he used to say tha 🤣

blibblibs · 26/03/2022 00:07

We live in Yorkshire but aren't from Yorkshire and every evening when the local news comes on we wonder out loud how Yorkshire has saved the world that day!
Thankfully we moved here after the DC had already done a few years at school otherwise they wouldn't know the word the existed Grin

SpringsSprung · 26/03/2022 00:09

@CatsOperatingInGangs

You’re all just jealous. It’s not called God’s Own County for nowt. I mean, just look at it!
I know exactly where that was taken! With Knabs Ridge wind farm in the distance
SpringsSprung · 26/03/2022 00:12

@moggerhanger absolutely love Bridlington and want to retire there

Are you joking? I visited Brid 2 years ago and was appalled at how rundown and depressing it's become. The town centre is ready to die. The beach is fabulous I agree, especially since it had such investment in it and the harbour is fab too but retire there? There's nothing to do! Have you been within the last 10/20 years? If not, you may be in for a shock

For Yorkshire folk

SpringsSprung · 26/03/2022 00:19

@SofiaSoFar

I'd rather hear Yorkshire people talking about being from Yorkshire than hear a southern accent saying anything at all.

Too much, "I fink it cost free farsand paands", etc.

Urgh.

THIS!!!!! See also "That's why I done it!!" and words such as 'demand' pronounced as "Demaaaaarnd" rather than "De-manned" like the rest of us!
SpringsSprung · 26/03/2022 00:22

@schroeder

I identify with this so much. I can't understand why they all think it's so great? Too hilly, crap beer, chips cooked in lard! Bleugh
Oh yes, looks crap doesn't it.....Hmm Confused

@Odilla

🤣 Yorkshire is everywhere it seems.

Witness:

  1. Bridlington
  2. Knaresborough
  3. Malham Cove
That is NOT Knaresborough! This is

I absolutely respect the people of Yorkshire being proud of their heritage and county but I hate the lazy stereotyping of 'Southerners'. We don't all sound like Danny Dyer and there are real differences in accents from the various counties.

Don't forget Foxes biscuits.

For those who have never heard of them you have eaten them if you have eaten M and S or Waitrose biscuits.

Oh and don't forget factory shops, I know they can be found in other places but I have such happy memories of huge bags of broken biscuits.

Lolabray · 26/03/2022 06:09

I agree people do this but it is not some thing I’d do or my friends would do. Also being told my dad worked down a pit and I have whippets when I lived in Essex!

I also don’t like the stereotype that people for example turn off the heating cos we are tight- I’m not tight I’d consider it a necessity.

Gardeningcreature · 26/03/2022 06:29

Has anyone mentioned Yorkshire Terriers?

Don't really like them myself, as a child our next door neighbours had 2 very self righteous ones who never, ever, stopped yapping at us.

(Sorry Yorkshire Terrier lovers).

Now Jane MacDonald is different. I will not hear a bad word spoken about her!

Perhaps she could officially open 'Yorkshire Day.'

Roo4u · 26/03/2022 06:58

@Gardeningcreature please tell me there's not actually a Yorkshire day Grin oh and I have heard people say well im from Yorkshire but stipulate which part because its embarrassing to be from certain parts apparently

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 26/03/2022 07:05

@Roo4u

Are you sitting down? Yes, Yorkshire Day is 1st August Wink

chatterboxday · 26/03/2022 07:19

I've lived in Yorkshire for many years and no I'm not from Yorkshire. There seems to be a lot of Yorkshire pride. The local news is full of "proud to be Yorkshire" stuff. I find it really insular.

People here are supposed to be friendly. They will make conversation at bus stops etc but where I live a lot of people don't really want to be friends.

I'm moving when I retire.

There is indeed, it is one of the few days some soldiers may wear a rose in their berets.

No offence to Yorkshire terriers but they are by far the worst kind of terrier, I mean you've got west highland terriers, Welsh terriers, Scottish terriers, Norfolk terriers! (They are adorable) (I know there's loads of other terriers but yeah Yorkshire's are down the bottom for me!)

Yes! People seem friendly on the surface, but I've found it very hard to make friends with actual Yorkshire folk since I've been here. The friends I've made have generally been incomers.

It must be because I'm from That London. So therefore think I'm great.

chatterboxday · 26/03/2022 08:02

@herbaceous - I knew it wasn't just me lol. My friends are not from Yorkshire. I found it easier to make friends in that London 😊

pastypirate · 26/03/2022 08:11

There is a parent at dd2 school who has specified her Yorkshire background on the front of her house. As in the plate on the wall by the front door specifying the street number.

NickHS · 26/03/2022 08:18

I think many of us have a habit of ‘bigging up’ our communities in the face of prejudice, perceived or otherwise. Some tend to be more overt or persistent. Scousers obviously and ‘Northerners’ generally. It’s really an inherent chippiness addressed to an imaginary audience living in the snooty and over-privileged Home Counties and London especially.
