NC because this post will definitely be recognisable to friends that have spoken about this recently (👋🏻 If you’re reading).

We were talking about different things that appear in different places in the country.

Where you live, can you order:

  • Spice on your chips (not salt & pepper chips, or chilli chips, but Chip Spice),
  • A pizza platter, or,
  • Lemony minted cabbage?

And where are you? Grin

Salt and sauce on chips in Edinburgh.

MichaelAndEagle · 23/03/2022 07:48

Never heard of any of them. Live in Newcastle, from North Wales.

TheGreatFoodDivide · 23/03/2022 07:52

www.bonappetit.com/recipe/lemony-cabbage-with-mint

This looks like the right type of recipe - you’ve got to let it sit for a while and soften though.

As @supadupapupascupa says, it comes in kebabs (I’ve not had one for about 15 years - vegetarian) but it also comes in side salads - delicious!

I have no idea what any of those things are. I'm in Cumbria and have previously lived in Suffolk and Nottingham.

Simonjt · 23/03/2022 07:58

Not a huge fan of american salt spice, it doesn’t taste of much. But a few places here (north london) have it, a few places also had it in Nottinghamshire.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2022 08:00

It's amazing how this sort of thing varies so much between areas?

If you asked for a fish cake here, you would get something different to what most of you are expecting.

The chips would be cooked in beef dripping so sorry vegetarians.

If you were extra hungry, you might get a breadcake but then you'd be faced with a meal that wouldn't fit on your largest dinner plate for under £6.

HighlandCowbag · 23/03/2022 08:01

Not heard of the pizza platter, unless it's one of those mixed boxes with chips, pizza, onion rings etc all served in a pizza box?

Chip spice is a Hull thing isn't it? And the lemony cabbage is easy to make.

Shred a white cabbage, cover with oil and lemon juice, salt and pepper and cover bowl with clingfilm and leave for at least 8 hours to 'cook'. I don't do mint in it but presume it's just a bit of mint sauce stirred through. I do it quite often in the summer for BBQs, always goes down a storm.

E621 = monosodium glutamate.

NoraButty · 23/03/2022 08:02

We call it Red Salt, independent takeaways tend to offer it, not seen it anywhere else. I’m North West.

I’ve not heard of the lemony minty cabbage but I’m interested 😆

Xtraincome · 23/03/2022 08:21

Heard of none, would definitely try. From Staffordshire, lived in London 10 years, now in Northamptonshire.

LadyFanny · 23/03/2022 08:23

@userxx

I'm up north and spice is readily available, usually in Piccadilly gardens, it's not something that goes on chips though.

No but they all sound good. Does a pizza platter mean just different types?

I’m in Sydney but from Scotland.

mizzo · 23/03/2022 08:23

What would you get? I'm intrigued Grin

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 23/03/2022 08:24

A slice of fish sandwiched between big slices of potato, which is then battered and deep fried.

The breadcrumbed ones with fish and mashed potato combined are not generally sold in fish and chip shops in Yorkshire, no-one would date Grin.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2022 08:30

no-one would dare, that is.

milkysmum · 23/03/2022 08:33

I'm in a village in Lancashire. We have red salt in some chippys, never heard of other two things.

DinosaurRenaissance · 23/03/2022 08:34

I haven't heard of any of them. South west. A few years on the outskirts on London. They all sound delicious Grin
Might make the cabbage one!

longwayoff · 23/03/2022 08:43

I've changed my mind about the cabbage Grin will make later today.

mizzo · 23/03/2022 08:54

@BarbaraofSeville
I thought it must be Yorkshire as you said bread cake. I've never heard of a fish cake like that though, sounds delicious!
I need to track them down, I've had patties, scraps, scallop potatoes, chip spice and mint sauce on fish and chips.

Georgeskitchen · 23/03/2022 09:03

Also to be enjoyed in many of Her Majesty's "establishments" I believe!!

I've had them in Leeds.

emmathedilemma · 23/03/2022 11:52

Is a pizza platter the same as a munchie box?
I've never heard of the salt and cabbage but I don't eat kebabs. The standard is salt & sauce on chips here.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/03/2022 11:54

I live in London and come from Dublin, and I've never heard of any of those things. But I am intrigued, especially by the lemon cabbage.
