£1.25m to buy a shell!!

It's a pricey area around here, yes, but £1.25m for a house you'd need to gut and start again Shock

I suppose you could just float on the presumably unheated swimming pool while you're waiting...

When you said a shell, I wss expecting bare brick walls, no kitchen or bathroom, pipes & wires hanging out of the walls.
I don't know the area at all but presume the bungalow is well located. I'd love to buy it and renovate. Just about £1.5M short!

Ipadflowers · 21/03/2022 12:08

It’s not really a shell? It’s just a normal house in need of renovation.

Octomore · 21/03/2022 12:09

How on earth is that house 'just a shell'?

It needs a new kitchen, bathroom, carpets etc., and it needs decorating. But it is definitely not just a shell.

God knows what the estate agent was thinking with the out of focus snooker ball photo though.

girlmom21 · 21/03/2022 12:11

4,000sq ft of house with half an acre of land and a swimming pool? It only needs some modernisation. That's a reasonably priced property.

Octomore · 21/03/2022 12:11

If that is a 'shell', then the 80s/90s decor house we moved into was also a shell. Except wait, no it wasn't. It was and is perfectly liveable in while we gradually redecorate and renovate to our own taste

BarbaraofSeville · 21/03/2022 12:12

Er, it's perfectly liveable except that it's dated.

You could live in it and do it up over time.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/03/2022 12:13

Someone up the road from us has bought a house for 1.7 million and has submitted plans for a complete refurb inside and out. I would guess they might be spending another 500k on this. People will pay a lot to be in the right location!

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 21/03/2022 12:13

Its not a shell, just needs modernising. You could live in it now.
No idea if its expensive for what it is in that area, however.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 21/03/2022 12:13

Quite mid-century cool with minimal effort, that. Definitely not a shell!

Although you’d have to pay me 1.5 million smackers to live in Hitchin again so for that reason I’m out

PutYourBackIntoit · 21/03/2022 12:15

I'd love to be let loose on that!

nancy75 · 21/03/2022 12:16

£1.2 million of that is for the plot I would imagine, it looks very much like a house that would be bought & knocked down where I live

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 21/03/2022 12:19

It doesn't "need" new kitchen/bathroom/carpets. Millions of people in the UK are living perfectly happily in houses like that.

I grant you that if I moved in I'd want to revamp most of it, but assuming the electrics aren't dangerous and the central heating works it's a want rather than a need.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/03/2022 12:20

It's a shame when people knock houses down or completely gut them.

I read about this one a few days ago, it's been in the same family for 80 years apparently and has a lot of original features.

I'd want more neutral walls and carpets and the pink bathroom would have to go, but I'd want to keep the fireplaces and do something with the kitchen units rather than get rid of them completely.

VanCleefArpels · 21/03/2022 12:20

Value of the land - a developer will be eyeing this up to build numerous houses on a big plot

Gonnagetgoing · 21/03/2022 12:22

I suppose it's reasonably priced for the area but it's so dated in so many ways.

TheHoptimist · 21/03/2022 12:22

I think that you have no idea of what buying a shell is
The house is perfectly habitable and mortgageable , it could be updated if the buyer isnt a fan of early the 1970s finish

SheWoreYellow · 21/03/2022 12:22

You know houses don’t come with the furniture when you buy them? Grin

ClariceQuiff · 21/03/2022 12:23

The interior is dated but unless there are issues e.g. with electrics that are not being disclosed, there is no reason why you couldn't live in it as is while you updated the decor and fittings to your taste. I've seen far more shabby and dated houses that are lived in as they are!

Gonnagetgoing · 21/03/2022 12:23

wonder if they'll keep the pool?

There are some properties local to me and to DM where they're both getting indoor pools fitted apparently. One's just a detached house (not that nice of one really) but not huge.

theveryhungrycatapillar · 21/03/2022 12:24

It's gorgeous I love it!! Just needs some modernising! I clicked on the thread expecting it to be a very special and rare seashell to be honest lol!

Looks like it is being sold with covenants on it - can’t split the land / have more than one dwelling

It's a bit daft getting a pool installed with the energy price increases I think! Imagine the cost to keep it heated, clean etc!
WhatAWasteOfOranges · 21/03/2022 12:26

This could be an absolutely fantastic house. I can see why it’s priced at that…

I misread the m in the title and thought someone was complaining about paying £1.25 for a conch shell or something Grin
WhackingPhoenix · 21/03/2022 12:27

I opened this thread with a seashell in mind Grin

That house is totally liveable! It just perhaps isn’t decorated as you or others might like.
