Things that would apall your grandmother?

Lighthearted - just missing my nanna thinking about this.

I was making a quick dinner while my mum was over and hovering about while chatting. The plan was some homemade chips and i grabbed a small knife and began peeling potatoes, next thing i get a playful slap on the shoulder and a reminder that my nan would have been appalled at me 'wasting so much potato' by not using a peeler.

Made me smile because i had that conversation with her plenty of times when she was still around. She never clicked on that i don't reuse teabags, that the clothes dryer wasn't just for emergencies, that i use fresh oil and dont have a frying pan in the cupboard with fat/oil older than me in it...

OP posts:

Eating in the street! Not even a quick packet of crisps!

Just what I was going to say!
Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 20/03/2022 08:52

That I have tattoos and my dd's have their ears pierced.

Lagattolove · 20/03/2022 08:53

Getting drunk. Actually just having more than one Sherry at Christmas would have appalled her.

undermilkjug · 20/03/2022 08:53

That i work.

felulageller · 20/03/2022 08:54

Scottish Independence

That apalls me to be fair!!🤣🤣🤣

lookatgiraffenow · 20/03/2022 08:57

Couple more...I miss my gran too.
Ladies did not go to the pub. Not even the 'lounge' or 'saloon' parts of it.
Smoke in public (gran didn't smoke at all, no one in the family did/does).

Oh the horror of it all!

ipswichwitch · 20/03/2022 08:58

Drinking any brand of tea that’s not Yorkshire tea

2tired2bewitty · 20/03/2022 08:59

She would have been horrified that I used ready made pancakes for Shrove Tuesday this year 😱😱 I do miss ringing her to ‘check’ the recipe though

OMG yes this one!! My mum used to do this as well. When I was a pre-teen I got her to stop reusing oil. I used to get rid of it when she wasn’t looking. She would scold me for throwing away ‘good’ oil so I had to lie that the old oil was making me ill. Blush

People not wearing hats to Chapel.

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 20/03/2022 09:00

That I went to uni instead of getting married and having kids asap.
That I work full time instead of staying at home.
That I sometimes swear in general conversation.
That I let the DC have 'picnics' on the living room floor for tea.
That I only have two DC!
She would be very disapproving if she was still about Grin

Yep, even a biscuit n the garden. But a picnic away from home was ok.
itrytomakemyway · 20/03/2022 09:02

Saying kids, not children
Saying what , not pardon
Whistling in a public place
The fact that we have had a Tory government for so long
That several of her grandchildren have children without being married
That women have to wait until they are 67 to get their state pension
The length of waiting times to see a GP or to be seen in A and E

Aww my nanny was so lovely but yes she wouldn’t have liked tattoos on women, they were only for men serving in the Navy, drinking alcohol, I don’t think she ever did, not even on special occasions. I miss her loads, she was always so supportive.

AuntieMarys · 20/03/2022 09:06

Doing washing on a Sunday.

I have "my grandmother" and then the other grandmother. The other grandmother was appalled at a lot of stuff, but we weren't close.

My grandmother was not appalled at much. When she was young she rode horses bare back, used tobacco, had a whisky from time to time, played guitar, sang live on the radio, wore an adorable fancy pleated pair of shorts, gorgeous handmade clothes. She was poor but looked so glamorous. Took such great care of her skin. Her nails were always so pretty. She was an amazing cook, kitchen garden gardener, seamstress. She enjoyed cheeky humour. She just accepted me and loved me and was never critical... and, OP, she gave me a peeler about 35 years ago. It's one of my most treasured possessions! Thank you for the prompt to remember such a lovely woman.

inheritancetrack · 20/03/2022 09:10

Just about everything, although she was very blasé about gay relationships

I was coming on to say eating in the street! Mine would be appalled by my children wander around snacking!
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/03/2022 09:14

I still remember my grandmothers shock at me wearing ripped jeans, with the cuffs dragging along the floor getting more bedraggled as the day went on. She offered to mend them for me. My mother told her they were supposed to look like that... (would have been the early 2000s, she lived in a quiet Scottish village while I grew up in London...)

Drinkyourweaklemondrink · 20/03/2022 09:15

I'm in my 40s and my grandma was born in 1910 so there was quite the generational gap
Tattoos
Swearing
Rock music. I used to listen to nirvana as a teen and she hated that.

LadyGAgain · 20/03/2022 09:15

My Nana was fabulous. Gentle. A true lady. Traditional - family first. Came from nothing and appreciated everything she and my grandpa worked for.

She would hate my hoop earrings "only gypsy rose Lee wears hoops".

Some of my knickers have seen better days. If I was wearing said pair and needed to go to hospital she would be appalled. Best underwear every day was her motto... in case you need an ambulance.

She sounds awesome!
Idratherhaveacuppa · 20/03/2022 09:18

That my kids aren't christened. She wouldn't have let them in her house. Nasty old bag.
My maternal grandmother on the other hand - not a lot! Chalk and cheese 😂
