What's your solution for keeping hair off your face when walking/running?

I have thick, unruly hair, collarbone length, that won't stay in a ponytail, pigtails or any kind of grip or clip if I go for a long walk (or do anything which involves getting warm/sweaty). It frizzes up and escapes everything.

A woolly hat has worked fine all winter, although my head is pin-sized so even a hat slips off and I have to keep pulling it back on.

Thin sports headbands and elastic yoga type hairbands slip off, or the top layers of my hair just bend double over them and flop forward into my eyes.

I bought 4 Hygge headbands, 2 of each length, but I have to jam bobby pins/kirby grips all around to stop them unravelling and looking like some form of wimpole before they simply pop right off my head.

Plastic Alice bands that end behind your ears aren't bad but tend to be uncomfortable.

A baseball cap is a bit too hot in summer and I also wear glasses, so a peak just makes my glasses steam up.

Any ideas that have worked for you if you are hot and menopausal with springy hair, glasses and a small head? I do sweat a lot from my head, in summer the sweat runs right out of my ponytail. Blush

Claire’s accessories do some wide cotton headbands that work well for me. I find buff sized bands are too long, and same problem with others being too tight.

I make and wear knitted headbands - have a look at local craft fares etc, they're so comfy

Just been looking on Amazon, they've got some wide fabric ones attached to a standard plastic alice band - but you do risk cheap tat from there.

Ooh I can crochet, will they stay on any better than any other band of the same style though? Anything that has to pass round the back of my head will slip off!

The company that makes those invisibobbles do a super comfortable adjustable Alice band. They’re in boots.

What about something like this? Might hold the ponytail a bit better and is designed to wick the sweat away.

Pony tail with a Hygge Band.

Laufeythejust · 19/03/2022 21:34

I have a lululemon running headband. It’s elasticated and has a velvet strip on the inside which clings to my hair pretty well and doesn’t move.

HouseofHolbein · 19/03/2022 21:35

Grade 3 all over works for me 😊 still wear a buff to protect my ears tho.

trilbydoll · 19/03/2022 21:37

Actual branded Buffs are smaller than Hygge bands and stay on better (although you might have the same problem with them steadily climbing off your head)

I wear a cap, it's never made my glasses steam up. How close is the peak to your glasses?!

Failing that, taking the hair back in lots of tiny ponytails secured with those elastic hair ties that stick to the hair. Main downside is you might look like Medusa Grin

UnaOfStormhold · 20/03/2022 07:32

Is growing your hair an option? Not immediate of course... I find hygge bands work for me as long as I don't fold them too many times (making them wider seems to increase grippiness) but best in conjunction with a plait!

BogRollBOGOF · 20/03/2022 07:48

A children's sized buff/ snood?

nevertoooldforindie · 20/03/2022 07:57

I do a lot of hill walking and I hate whisky bits of hair touching my face. I am always hot and hormonal In winter I use a fleece hair band that covers my ears but tried a few to get a good fit. In summer i west a visor. Might look a bit untrendy but means I don’t need sunglasses. Which I also find annoying

EleanorDeCleaner · 20/03/2022 16:59

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. Smile Medusa lol.

I've been trawling Amazon and Etsy, having decided that an Alice-band style seems to work best but needs to just be super wide to stop the wispy bits escaping.

My hair stopped growing and started breaking in menopause, so I'm having some cut off actually!

There are some wide ones around but they're just a bit of stiff tulle netting glued to a plastic headband, with some fabric ruched over the top. For £20! Well I can make my own for less than that.

I'm not completely averse to a visor, but even if it sits an inch above my glasses they'll still steam up? Maybe I'm just extra hot and moist. Grin

I live in a very hot country and always run with a baseball cap to keep the sun off my face. Just get a thin one designed for exercise with lots ventilation. I also run with sunglasses and no issues with steaming up, just make sure they are nice and tight.

AnybodyAnywhere · 20/03/2022 17:06

I use Hygge headbands and never have a problem with, very comfortable.

BobblyBlueJumper · 20/03/2022 17:07

A visor?

I hate bits of hair in my face. I have tried all kinds of buffs, bands, ties, caps.

Branded buffs stay on better than hygge ones, they are stretchier. Hygge ones gave me a headache after a while.

I bought some thin elastic Nike alice bands with silicone on the inside - the kind you see footballers wearing - and they gradually slide off my head.

I just wear a visor now like some sort of 90s triathlete. They're stiffer than other kinds of headgear so hair finds it difficult to escape.

Eckek · 20/03/2022 17:20

Cut a thick band from the leg of a pair of black opaque tights? I have the same problem!

RestingPandaFace · 20/03/2022 17:23

I have to cut hygge bands in half as they are too tight on my giant head and pop off. If they are no use to you anyway try cutting on in half.

Alternatively use Kirby grips to pin the front back off your face, or try a half ponytail for just the front.

nordica · 20/03/2022 17:30

When you use Kirby grips, use two and cross them over one in each direction. That keeps them in place really firmly.

Babdoc · 20/03/2022 17:34

Why not just get a really short, smart haircut, OP?! Much less bother all round. I wash mine when I get up, it’s dry by the time I’ve eaten breakfast, and nothing blows in my face however windy the weather. Solved.

EleanorDeCleaner · 20/03/2022 18:36

Whooah @LaraDeSalle that's neat...and a snip at £800. Shock

Few more ideas there, thanks - I'll have a look for a thin running cap with ventilation for my head steam.

I used to have a very chic pixie cut @babdoc, but that was about 20 years and 5 stone ago. I'm very nervous of the fat face/short hair combo, I am prepared to go for a chin length tousled bob!

Surely this would get all sweaty and horrible when running though?
swapsicles · 20/03/2022 18:55

How about french plaits? Or perhaps several smaller ponytails around the front of your face, say 6/8 coming back from your forehead then an Alice band on top, If you pop a couple of grips in they should stay better due to the ponytails

CMOTDibbler · 20/03/2022 19:06

I use a Buff visor - they have a soft band and stay on really well (Hygge bands just pop off my head too)
