What do your DC eat for breakfast?

confusedofengland · 19/03/2022 16:04

I am interested in finding out what other DC eat for breakfast. Even better if they are 10/11 year old boys.

I took DS2 to a paediatrician (routine appointment for his ADHD)& she said I don't give him enough breakfast. He has grown 2cm in height since January & 2kg in weight since end of July & she says he is not growing enough. He is on approx 6th centile weight/50th height. GOSH were happy with him upon seeing his dad who is similar build.

He usually has 2 slices of toast with marmite & juice, on weekdays. Weekends usually 2 courses - crumpets/croissants/waffles, followed by a plate of fruit. He is slow to do everything, including eat, and toast is quickest thing we have found.

Mine was always very tall (90+) and skinny (I understand that he went below 1st centile at one point) but he is now going up the weight charts since he started going through puberty (but I will dare not weight him again!). He also looks stronger so he must be filling out in some way. Typically, he will have one of the following (with a glass of apple juice):

3 crumpets with cheese/Marmite

three veggie sausages with mushtooms, tomatoes and occasionally a slice of fried bread

pancake stack with forest fruits and drizzled dark chocolate

Or when he is not very hungry or I cannot be bothered:

one round of waffles with maple syrup
two slices friend bread with Mediterranean herbs (fried in olive oil)
porridge

I would like to encourage more varied breakfasts but it is probably not the worst either Blush

As much as they want. Sometimes they’ll just have a bowl of cereal other times they will have cereal and a four slices of toast with bacon.

SiulaGrande · 19/03/2022 16:20

DD has one of these:
Slice of wholemeal toast, fruit eg berries or a pear cut up with half a small pot of alpro fruit yoghurt on
Slice of toast and one egg scrambled
Slice of toast with portobello mushroom baked with a squirt of ketchup
Porridge with grated apple / cut up pear stirred in with a little maple syrup and sometimes a spoon of peanut butter.

Doesn't like peanut butter on toast, used to have a spoonful on the side, or other more nutritious nut butter like almond.

Always has a glass of oat milk.
For ages she had frozen banana and berries smoothie as the fruit but went off that.

Peanut butter or marmite on either toast or a toasted bagel.

gogohm · 19/03/2022 16:23

At that age my DD's would have one slice of toast or a pain au chocolate, sometimes a cocoa pops and milk bar. Neither like cereal. 2 slices of toast seems plenty to me as long as he's not begging for more

Beecham · 19/03/2022 16:32

My 10/11 yo eats less than that on school days. She usually just has a bowl of cereal or a cinnamon bagel with juice. Doesn't always finish.

Xiaoxiong · 19/03/2022 16:36

DSs of 8 and 10 here. The 8 year old usually has a huge bowl of cereal, sometimes with sliced banana on top. He is always ravenous in the morning so eats tonnes.

The 10 year old doesn't like "breakfast food" so will have leftovers warmed up from the night before, but often isn't very hungry in the morning. He'll eat like a horse later on.

Yerroblemom1923 · 19/03/2022 16:39

Bowl of cereal or toast. If she doesn't eat at home she usually gets toast at break time at school. She's 13. She's seems to be a healthy height/ weight - we don't have scales as I'm conscious of eating disorders.

VampireMoney · 19/03/2022 16:39

Eldest DD has never eaten breakfast, she's never been hungry in a morning. My younger 2 never anything more than a couple of slices of toast or a bagel. My parents didn't do breakfast so I never had it as a kid and still don't.

SnowWhiteLobelia · 19/03/2022 16:39

I have 10 year old and 12 year old boys. The 12 year old has sensory issues relating to food and as a result is teeny tiny and needs bulking up.

Generally I feed them;

a (very) small bowl of cereal (cheerios) without milk for DS1. - usually ramekin sized.
Plus a slice of toast with butter / cream cheese/ nutella
Piece of fruit - strawberries usually
vitamin tablet

Sometimes if DS1s eating is bad I give him a chocolate milkshale with full fat milk, fortified powders and vanilla icecream.

On Thursdays we leave early for school and they always have a drive through McDonalds bacon roll with hash browns. It's our Thursday treat.

Weekends usually pancakes / bagels.

SnowWhiteLobelia · 19/03/2022 16:40

To add- they don't want more than that. If I tried 2 slices of toast for example it would just get left.

theskyispurple · 19/03/2022 16:47

4 kids... various appetites. Usually one of the following...bowl cereal and milk, 1 slice toast and 2 fried eggs, 2 eggs scrambled no toast, homemade banana pancakes with berries and golden syrup/ maple/Nutella, 2 crumpets with jam, 3 crackers , olives and a cheese sting and Frube, croissant and jam.

MrsGHarrison87 · 19/03/2022 16:49

Cereal or toast with either cheese spread, butter or chocolate spread occasionally. Dippy eggs with toast or bacon/ sausage sandwiches on weekends.

Wouldyoubabys · 19/03/2022 16:50

Ds has a huge bowl of cereal on weekdays. On weekends he goes through phases of not eating much at all, or having EVERYTHING! Wouldn’t be unusual for him to have cereal, then a sausage sandwich, then fruit….. then snacks….. then lunch an hour later!

museumum · 19/03/2022 16:52

Weetabix or granola at home then three dats a week cheerio’s at breakfast club.

Sometimes toast with Nutella at weekends.

He’s 8 and small for his age and slim.

Pascha · 19/03/2022 16:55

Either 2 crumpets with peanut butter or 2 weetabix with banana and honey and milk.

He's never been known to want much more first thing in the morning and he's a solid soul.

Beaker12 · 19/03/2022 16:57

DS 10 also with ADHD - struggle to get a thin bagel with marmite down him. Have also been told he needs to increase weight ( not helped by the fact his meds means he has no appetite plus sensory of school lunch hall so barely eats at lunch).

I’ve started giving him a large glass of smoothie as well, sometimes encourage a milkshake. He quite likes nuts and can pick at these so will offer him some of those at breakfast too. Also very slow at eating and not hungry in the mornings ..

Retrievemysanity · 19/03/2022 17:00

I have an 11 year old tall and skinny DD. She has a bowl of cereal on weekdays. At weekends she will have 2 crumpets with Nutella or pancakes with berries. What you’ve said sounds fine to me.

DelurkingAJ · 19/03/2022 17:01

DS1 (9) large bowl of porridge (made with full fat milk and a little golden syrup) and a glass of apple juice during the week. At the weekend, vast quantities of fruit followed by a peanut butter bagel. He’s tall (90th+) and slim (50th).

MissyB1 · 19/03/2022 17:02

Ds is 12 he has
Weekdays:
Bowl of porridge or bran flakes with raisins
Small bowl of mixed berries
An Actimel
Glass of orange juice

Weekend:
Pancakes / berries/ smoothie
Bagel with bacon
Cereals and croissant

Ineedastyleicon · 19/03/2022 17:04

My 10 year old boy is also very tall and skinny, has one or two bowls of cereal for breakfast. Either shreddies, cheerios or sugar puffs.

couldthisbeit · 19/03/2022 17:04

Boys of 9 and 11 here. Weekdays is a boiled egg with 2 slices toast, small glass of juice or portion of fruit, cup of tea or porridge with nut butter and grated apple, cup of tea or milk or a bacon / sausage sandwich with juice / tea.
Weekends similar if early football, otherwise a tonne of pancakes or poached eggs, mushrooms and avocado on toast. Both big eaters in the morning and all day in fact. Rarely do cereal as they're prowling for more within an hour.

MaizeAmaze · 19/03/2022 17:07

10 yr old: one slice of bread, cut by me and about an inch thick, with butter and marmite. Water to drink.
12 yr old: as above, but with honey, or a bowl of cherieos. Milk or tea to drink.

Weekends:pancakes or waffles with fruit, or chocolate croissants.

danni0509 · 19/03/2022 17:09

Ds is weighed regularly becuase of adhd medication @confusedofengland He had not gained anything for 4 months between last weigh ins, but had grown a few cm in height.

I’ve been weighing him at home and he’s still not put anything on. He has autism too so really fussy with food. He looks so thin becuase he’s growing upwards but not outwards.

Can you give your ds full fat milk? In hot chocolate or plain x 2 cups a day for extra calories? Will he eat peanut butter on toast? Salted peanuts? I find these high in calories.

MajorCarolDanvers · 19/03/2022 17:13

Weekdays

Cereal - shreddies, bran flakes, weetabix or a banana and a yogurt

Weekends - boiled egg and toast, toast and chocolate spread, porridge, pop tarts or some times a full Scottish breakfast

Mine are 13 and 9
