Would you take dc out of school to save £ on holiday

Just looking to book a holiday, not had one for 3 years, and too go in June (term-time) it is over £1000 cheaper. Would you take children out of school? I have a year 6 who would have finished SATs and a year 1.
Also, does anyone know what the fine is if they fine you?

£60 per child per parent I think

£240

myfavfood · 19/03/2022 09:23

Thanks @BluebellsGreenbells so still works out a lot cheaper

Yes. Year 6 is a largely wasted year due to SATs anyway

BananaPlants · 19/03/2022 09:24

We are going after SATS as well, the rest of the class will be on school camp for some of that week so I hope the school will take into consideration that it would have been some time off anyway (and not fine !h

toomuchlaundry · 19/03/2022 09:25

Would Y6 miss transition days, school play rehearsal, residential?

0htooooodles · 19/03/2022 09:26

Yep, I have and would again.

toomuchlaundry · 19/03/2022 09:27

@BananaPlants does your DC not mind missing the school camp?

lanbro · 19/03/2022 09:27

Yes, I have taken mine out every year in primary apart from 2020/21. I've never been fined although did get a warning from the LEA once, bit they'd missed a week in January and another week in April.

TBH I think any LEA would have a bloody cheek fining after the disruption of the last 2 years!

myfavfood · 19/03/2022 09:27

They have a residential trip in July so wouldn't miss that and teacher has said that after SATS it is mainly fun and games

When do they do transition days, meet their tutor etc?

NuffSaidSam · 19/03/2022 09:28

I wouldn't for a whole week. A day or so around half term I would.

BananaPlants · 19/03/2022 09:28

No, I gave the choice first. For the last Yeo years we have gone in August and prices were so much lower due to COVID, but back to being £1000’s more expensive during school holidays again now

Was it schools decision not to fine you and did you tell them you were going away I'm tempted to call and say they are not well!

I know they would be cheeky to fine but I can see them still doing it, even though they always have 100% attendance

No because if we use a week of our holiday allowance in term time then that's a week of school holiday we have to send them to a club or similar. So it just creates a logistical headache further down the line. I don't think a week out of school is the end of the world though especially towards the end of term.

Your local council should have the fines on the website. We don't get fined until it's over a week of unauthorised absence (10 sessions +)

I've been told this will be July

That is not until later @toomuchlaundry, SATS are beginning of May, so there is still a while to go until they finish for summer

OddestSock · 19/03/2022 09:30

I took mine out in reception, year 1, year 3 and year 5 (between 2 kids). I wouldn't hesitate in doing so again if they were both still in primary

MermaidEyes · 19/03/2022 09:31

At that age, yes. I did for several years until they reached Secondary age

I know I have this problem too regarding childcare, I work part time so going to try and work my days off to make up additional time. It's so hard I wish they wouldn't put the prices up so much more during school holidays

OP posts:
BeyondMyWits · 19/03/2022 09:32

We did it once in primary. Would not in secondary as the pace is so much faster.

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2022 09:32

My Y12 DD still talks about how the period between SATS and the end of Y6 was one of the best times of her entire school career so while I have taken an odd day off here and there over the years from school to save a bit of £ I probably wouldn’t do it then
shabbalabba · 19/03/2022 09:33

Yep...but we're In Ireland where no one bats an eyelid and there's no fines!!

Soihaveagoat · 19/03/2022 09:37

I have when my eldest was younger. Just a couple of days before the holidays so flying on the Thursday instead of the Saturday to save a lot of money. Now he's in year 9 I definitely wouldn't. I'm planning a big trip when he's done his last GCSE so the younger one will be in year 4 by then and will take him out for a week.
