Would you take dc out of school to save £ on holiday

Just looking to book a holiday, not had one for 3 years, and too go in June (term-time) it is over £1000 cheaper. Would you take children out of school? I have a year 6 who would have finished SATs and a year 1.
Also, does anyone know what the fine is if they fine you?

DS had quite a few transition days, college students coming into school and I’m sure some of them were in June. Also had 2 days of sex Ed which DS wasn’t impressed by Grin

Also spent time doing their school play

I always used to. I work in a school now so can't. It's one of the major downsides imo. We can't afford to go abroad any more

Tony Blair did it. They went to Tuscany I think and some people said a couple of weeks in Italy probably taught more than their school.

We are this term with our primary reception, yr1 & yr2 child. Saves a lot of money. Already informed it’s not authorised but just falls shy of the amount of days missed to be able to fine us. We won’t hesitate to take them out again unless it’s exam time.

I did years ago, it was £1600 cheaper to go to Cuba two days earlier and miss the last two days of the Spring term. My DC did mention they were missing the nice Easter stuff at school and I did feel guilty when I was away.

My Y12 DD still talks about how the period between SATS and the end of Y6 was one of the best times of her entire school career so while I have taken an odd day off here and there over the years from school to save a bit of £ I probably wouldn’t do it then

Same here, years 11 and 13 now and still remember that half term with great fondness. Not just fun and games but doing lots of helping out with the younger years, helping out around school, no pressure, they loved it.

Is it just a single £60 per child per parent or per day?

I had a friend who told me she and her husband were fined per day absent.

Houseplantmad · 19/03/2022 10:55

@Soihaveagoat be careful. There's always a contingency period with GCSEs which is at the very end of the cycle. They have to be around for that if anything happens which prevents an exam being sat or else risk failing the subject if they are a no show. It's a low risk but one you should be aware of.

What type of holiday is it? Packages are often more expensive.

Depending on how strong educational wise your DC are I would.
Mine come on more with 1:1 in short bursts from me anyway ( primary age).

Roselilly36 · 19/03/2022 11:02

Yes, we have done this when are two were at school. Made a huge difference to cost, only ever took a couple of days before the end of term, never got fined, you will receive a letter though. Assuming you are in England fine doesn’t kick in until, 10 sessions have been lost, so basically missing one week of education. I would do it if I was you.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/03/2022 12:41

No, I wouldn't. I suck it up and pay the extra, I don't want DS missing school.

myfavfood · 19/03/2022 16:09

So I think we are going to book so they miss just 2 days of school, it still works out at a saving of £900 Shock

It's so hard I wish they wouldn't put the prices up so much more during school holidays

They don't put the prices up in the school holidays, they reduce prices outside school holidays because of the reduced demand. It's to get more people booking.

I know people who have done this but in the last week of summer term, where they're not doing very much anyway.
