After years of loneliness, bullying and so many tears (from both of us), this weekend she’s going to the cinema with a group of friends!

We really hoped high school would be a fresh start and she’d make lots of new friends, but it was even harder than primary school.

When she sent me a text asking if she could go I could have jumped up and danced!

Anyway, I just had to share this good news with someone! Smile

I remember both of my sons going through the stage of being very lonely at school. Best of luck to your girl x

UselessASD · 18/03/2022 12:24

Wonderful!

Goldenbear · 18/03/2022 12:25

How lovely! I hope she has a fantastic time!

My son is not autistic but was bullied in year 7/8 and the 'friend' that he had via a friendship of mine as in the son of my friend who went to the same school, told him to stop following him around and find some of his own friends well he took him for his word and did just that. I felt very similar when in year 10 he asked to go out to the park with a group of new friends after school, then meet them in town on Saturday! He has loads of friends now and socially many options - probably too many as I have to encourage him to study! He is so happy and carefree it just warms my heart!

confusedofengland · 18/03/2022 12:25

That is amazing! As a mum to an ASD/ADHD boy I totally get where you are coming from. I dream of this being DS one day.

I hope it is the start of something beautiful for your DD

Asd mum here too I hope your daughter has a wonderful time x

CockapooMum · 18/03/2022 12:45

That's lovely. My daughter also has autism and selective mutism and didn't have one friend during high school. She's at uni now and living in a house share, has friends and regularly goes clubbing with them even tho it makes her uncomfortable at times she pushes herself to be more social and each time I do a happy dance 💃

mamaoffourdc · 18/03/2022 12:45

❤️ love this ❤️

Bloatstoat · 18/03/2022 12:48

This is fab OP, nice to have some happy news in the world, and things like this give me hope for my DS when he is older. Hope she has a lovely time and it's the first if many good times for her.

SomeoneSomewhere21 · 18/03/2022 12:48

Amazing, hope they have a great time.

I get it. My DC with ASD is 14 and similar issues, horribly bullied in y7.
We moved schools and he found his (small group of) people. The day he came home and casually said “I’m thinking of going ice skating with my mates at the weekend” I had to try not to whoop and cry!

Halllyup17 · 18/03/2022 12:56

I completely get you. My daughter is 18 and has asd. She very rarely goes out with anyone. I hope this is the start of things to come for you.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/03/2022 13:53

That's amazing! My ASD 14yo is miles from being able to do this - I hope she has a great time and it is the start of better times for her.

You should be proud of yourself for getting her here as well! ☕️🥂

Onehappymam · 18/03/2022 19:15

Thank you so much everyone for your well wishes. Flowers She’s been sending me updates and a photo of them all together. For a long time she hasn’t had a friend, never mind a group of them!

It makes me sad that so many of you can identify though. Of all the things I worried about when she was a baby, I never for one second worried about her feeling lonely and rejected. I just assumed she’d make lots of friends. Most kids either completely ignore her, or they’re mean.

For anyone whose kid hasn’t reached this stage yet, I hope one day they find their tribe. 🤞🏻

My DD wants to go to uni too @CockapooMum and though I encourage her, deep down I worry how she‘ll cope. I’m so glad your daughter is thriving. You’ve given me hope! Smile
