Where would you go?

I promised DH a child-free weekend away for his 30th birthday and I don’t know where to go. Any suggestions?

It’ll be the first May bank holiday weekend if that makes a difference.

I'm just back from a long weekend in Edinburgh for my birthday.
It was amazing.

Tintagel. Especially if there's good weather due. Stunning little place. We swam in the haven and felt like we were in a different world.

We also like Glastonbury, lots of fun, kooky shops and historical bits to see.

Rye for a gentler weekend. Lovely little place.
Liverpool or Bristol for a raver.

thefootballcoacheswife · 18/03/2022 13:33

Or Bath for one night and a day, on to Bristol for the next one-best of both

emmathedilemma · 18/03/2022 13:43

Another vote for Belfast, possibly my favourite city break.

Swansea........you have a great mix of coast and country to explore, Mumbles is lovely, nightlife on Wind Street and plenty of places to eat.

I’d never heard of Tintagel but it looks lovely!

Bathonian here. If you are planning a child free May Bank Holiday it probably isn't the best time to be heading onto the A303/M5 for Devon or Cornwall trip.

Websites like Secret Escapes/Travelzoo often have good offers.

Cardiff or the Gower are a good shout, or perhaps the Wye Valley, Purbeck or New Forest aren't too far away.

Suffolk coast - loads to do and see!

Depends what you want but these are lovely for a weekend, lots of places to visit nearby darwinescapes.co.uk/beach-cove-coastal-retreat/

They are lovely! I’d feel bad going somewhere so nice with easy beach access without our DDs.

Hmmm…

I would try South Queensferry. I can see it over the water from my window. Very quaint old town, think cobbled streets lined with hotels, bars and restaurants.

Here's a lovely hotel, but there are more:

www.oroccopier.co.uk/

Too many restaurants to list here.

You can do a lovely boat tour on the Forth. They do sailings during the day and disco/Jazz cruises at night.(Maid of the Forth or Forth Belle).

You can get a train in to the heart of Edinburgh, which only takes 10 minutes. For the best and poshest cocktails in town, try The Dome :

www.thedomeedinburgh.com/

You can get a 3 course lunch at Cafe Jules, for just £9.90

www.chezjulesbistro.com/menu

So much to do in Edinburgh, it's crazy.

If you had a car you could also go up north - St. Andrews etc.

We did Belfast recently, and that was really nice.

tigerbear · 18/03/2022 16:51

As many have already said, Newcastle!
I’m from there, so like a previous poster, totally biased, but it really does have everything!
My favourite restaurant in the country is there - Peace & Loaf. It gets booked up very quickly though.
Had the 18 course tasting menu recently, was amazing.

If you do Belfast, I'd recommend these apartments, as they are so central to everything.

www.centralbelfastapartments.com/

If you exit the apartment block and head left and left again, a two minute walk will bring you to this iconic street that is full of bars and restaurants :

Mind you need a vaccine passport AND your actual passport to get in anywhere.

ruthypfdraper · 18/03/2022 16:55

Newcastle is fab. It's glorious weather just now and the city has so much going for it. A short drive to the coast. Stop at the Angel of the North on your way. Explore the quayside market, have a drink in the ouseburn valley. Amazing architecture, friendly people. Nice b&bs in Jesmond.

SunflowerSmith · 18/03/2022 16:58

Lake District, lots of breathtaking walks for all abilities, beautiful villages, country pubs, stunning drives, there's nothing not to love.
I personally prefer the Northern lakes around Keswick area to the southern Windermere area.
If you enjoy driving then you must go through the Hardknott Pass.
