Where would you go?

I promised DH a child-free weekend away for his 30th birthday and I don’t know where to go. Any suggestions?

It’ll be the first May bank holiday weekend if that makes a difference.

We’re going to Scotland in the summer for a family holiday so probably won’t go for Edinburgh this time but will definitely put it on the list for future trips.

theholcombe.com/ We got flooded in here once. It was marvellous! Trip to Bath and Cheddar Gorge?

AdaColeman · 17/03/2022 19:44

Another vote for Newcastle on Tyne, lots to see and do, a good range of hotels and restaurants. The Laing Art Gallery is a perfect little gem.
If the weather is good, hop on a train to the coast, or track down some Roman remains.

Don't bother with Bath. I like Exmoor but that may be too close to home?

LoudSnoringDog · 17/03/2022 19:46

Birmingham

speakout · 17/03/2022 19:47

Orkney.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 17/03/2022 19:50

I wouldn’t have even thought of Newcastle so will definitely look into that.

Thank you for all of these suggestions.

Is do Yorkshire, we’re in the Cotswolds too so it rules that out and pretty much Bath too as can be done anytime.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 17/03/2022 20:04

Belfast; great restaurants and hotels, good shopping and nightlife and beautiful countryside about 10 minutes away Grin

2022myyear · 17/03/2022 20:06

Things to do in/near Newcastle

Art Galleries - Laing; Baltic (take lift to top floor - great view); Hancock Museum

Music - look at pub venues in Ouseburn (30 mins walk from centre); the Sage (classical) - walk across the Millenium Bridge.

Clubs - long while since I was in Grainger Town but it's an experience. Leave yer coat at the hotel.

Eat - good variety of restaurants. Depends what you like.

Coast. Tynemouth; Longsands - fab fish n chips here at The View but need to book. Right on the beach. Beaches are gorgeous. Tynemouth - think it has a market in old railway station on Sundays. Alnmouth - gorgeous beach - near to Alnwick where castle of Harry Potter filmed.

Northumberland. Hadrian's Wall. Go to Steel Rigg/Crag Loch and lunch at The Sill. Visit Hexham, Corbridge. 49 min train ride from Newcastle station.

Brighton or London.
Probably London

PeriodDrama · 17/03/2022 20:30

Northumberland, North Yorkshire or Cumbria.

Whitby is my fave destination, I love that whole coastline from its breathtakingly beautiful and you also have the moors at your disposal

gogohm · 17/03/2022 20:37

If you want fun go to Liverpool, the cavern club was particularly good

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 17/03/2022 20:46

@Tigersonvaseline

Brighton or London. Probably London
I’d be ok with London and that’s where I looked initially but DH grew up there so doesn’t consider it that special.

Liverpool for a city break, Lakes for country pubs, fab food and long, stunning walks.

AuntieMarys · 17/03/2022 20:50

Liverpool

JaninaDuszejko · 17/03/2022 20:50

We live in a large town in the South West. Very close to the Cotswolds.

We went to the Cotswold for my 30th (many many years ago!).

Lots of good suggestions here, how far are you prepared to travel? Assume you've been to all your local places like Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Oxford, Cheltenham and Gloucester already. What about down to the south coast, Lyme Regis etc? Alternately I'd go to Liverpool because everyone I know who has been there raved about it (it's on my list of places to go).

PinkGinBigGrin · 17/03/2022 20:52

I'd go to Dublin (but maybe you wouldn't want to fly?) as dh and I absolutely love it there and always have a great time.

Or if you don't fancy the Cotswolds or London I'd go to the Lake District.

30not13 · 17/03/2022 20:53

Birmingham is a really good place for a city break. Liverpool or Glasgow have the same kind of vibe too, really fun and interesting cities with lots to do.

notacooldad · 17/03/2022 20:54

We loved Liverpool, loads to do, a really interesting City if you fancy a city break
What do you like doing in Liverpool. @HerLadySheep

Dh keeps on suggesting a weekend there.

Figgygal · 17/03/2022 20:55

Live in south glos Devon is always my go to but the m5 on bank Holiday weekend can be hell
Cardiff? Swansea?

Satsumaeater · 17/03/2022 20:55

Also agree with Liverpool.

Not yet suggested but I had a great time in Belfast recently and you can probably fly there from Bristol.
