How much is the going rate and what do you expect (allow?) them to buy with it?

OP posts:
MagicDragonsPuff · 17/03/2022 21:39

£5 a week, mine bought whatever they wanted, usually crap but it’s their crap

Bugbeau · 17/03/2022 21:56

He gets £2.50 a week on a go Henry card. He sometimes saves it for Lego or a switch game. Sometimes buys random rubbish in the pound shop or the entertainer, sometimes buys comics/magazines with it (needs 2 weeks worth usually to do that).

sanityisamyth · 17/03/2022 21:58

Lego and magazines mainly

Is yr 5/6 when pocket money starts? Completely missed that one ..

DarkCorner · 17/03/2022 22:04

£3 a week. Sonetimes he buys sweets/fizzy drinks or saves up and buys an x box game. Or uses it in a gift shop if we have a day out (massively concentrates his mind if it’s his money that’s getting spent!!).

My dd is 10 in Yr 5 and heres goes on clothes and stupid bits and bobs from claires accessories and then on buying stuff like tokens and coins to allow her to continue further on in games like minecraft etc. She gets £50 a week plus tops up for an odd starbucks or cinnabon treat, Now before anyone jumps on me for such a stupid amount its not all me I promise you! Its £10 a week from me then £10 a week from Granny then her big brother slips her £20 for a little treat every saturday and then £10 from her uncle. She is very lucky.

Borris · 17/03/2022 22:10

Year 6 and £2 a week here.
She buys sweets, hair stuff, little cactus plants, magazines, a yoga ball recently

Pascha · 17/03/2022 22:13

Ds doesn't get regular pocket money yet but he has a reasonable amount stashed away from Grandparents and Christmas. He spends a little bit on sweets on a Friday but otherwise he ignores it so we don't top it up.

Fluffruff · 17/03/2022 22:13

£50 a week! Does she manage to save any of that? Lucky girl!

User280905 · 17/03/2022 22:14

£2.50 a week, usually spent on Pokemon cards

jazzandh · 17/03/2022 22:19

sweets mainly and funko pop stuff.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 17/03/2022 22:20

Mine at that age got £5-10 per week. The deal was they got a decent chunk of pocket money, but then no one nagged me for anything in the shop! So if they wanted sweets / snacks beyond what I bought in the supermarket / bottles of juice / whatever, that was fine, but they paid. They also saved for more expensive items such as Lego or computer games and bought souvenirs on days out. From a little older they bought small Christmas / birthday gifts for me and each other.
I never put restrictions on what they spent it on, beyond the obvious age related ones.
Both are now good at budgeting, including one with his own flat, and good and generous gift givers.

Yep she does, she has and I have just checked for you in the poppit purse 38,24p left from last week lol. I know there is nothing else she wants so she will take any money she hasnt spent and puts that in a jar for whenever she wants something big or too expensive for mum to buy! I refuse and always hve done to spend stupid amounts of money on tat,If she wants it she can save up and buy it! The last thing she wanted was some trainers, now I will biuy trainers at £30 but not at £70 no way will I ever spend that much I could never justify that at all. She got them but it took her about 2 months of her own money,

Do the other members of the family all know that she getting money from 3 other people a week?

Dd is now 12 but started going into town with her friends in Yr 6 (I was trying to get her a bit more independent before starting secondary school).

They mainly go to mcdonalds or starbucks, flying tiger and primark.

We got her a bank card as so many shops wouldn't take cash due to covid. We've found that dd is very sensible with her money, so I tend to top up her bank card with £30 when it gets low (I want her to have enough in there to cover most emergencies).

Sometimes the £30 will last for 2 months, but during the school holidays she can arrange to go way more frequently, thus needing top ups more frequently. And I want to encourage her meeting up with friends and wouldn't want her missing out because she's got no money.

It depends on what type of spender your dc is I guess. If they are likely to spend all the money in one go on every trip then set weekly pocket money. If they're sensible and don't blow it all then just top up when needed.

Dd is now almost at the stage where going clothes shopping with me is an utter trial for both of us, so I'm thinking of giving her a clothing budget and she can buy what she wants rather than my sensible hunt for 100% cotton tshirts. Plus she's started buying her own skin care and face masks, so that's something I'll divert from the weekly food shop budget to her.

Every trip she takes into town, she always brings back a little gidt for her younger brother. Usually a 50p pack of popping candy or a lollipop, or a car from the pounds hop. Something cheap, but it always makes his day. And I'd hate to limit her money in a way with a set amount of pocket money in case she felt like she couldn't do this anymore

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 17/03/2022 22:39

Yes they do lol, She is the only young one in the family so they all spoil her. My brother is 40 plus and not married and no kids so he just treats her and my mum does it cos she wants to and her own brother, my son is alot older than her and he and his partner take her out one day of the weekend and on holidays with them so while me and dad are sort of the steady normal parents kind of thing they all do the fun things probably like what they would do with their own children if they had them! She is here monday to friday then off who knows where with the extended family, It is lovely they all love her so much. She if asked would say she has 3 homes!

SkylarFerris · 17/03/2022 22:47

£5 a week. Spent on Pokémon cards, chocolate, games. Lots saved and lots spent.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 17/03/2022 22:48

£1 a week, spent on sweets. It’s a funny age for magazines and we have readily so she could use that if she wanted to, she gets plenty of stuff at Xmas and birthday so doesn’t want anything really so it seems pointless giving her more as she will fritter it away.

FreezyFreezy · 17/03/2022 22:48

They just get given money as and when rather than pocket money and they usually spend it on sweets or magazines. Occasionally they'll save up and want to go to Waterstones for a book or Lush for a bath bomb.

RoyKentsChestHair · 17/03/2022 22:51

My DD is a bit older than that - year 10 - but she sent me this earlier Grin

At that age she would have spent it all on Harry Potter merch.

What do your Yr 5/6 Dc buy with their pocket money?
BerryPieandCustard · 17/03/2022 23:56

Yr 6 DD gets £20 per week (£10 from me and £10 from Dad).

I pay onto a go Henry card and she generally saves it there for bigger purchases or things she wants to buy online. She has £64 in the savings pot and £21 in the card pot, she has it set to automatically transfer £2 per week into the savings and makes occasional transfers there. Dad gives cash and she buys herself one tonic gift card for £10 per month and the rest on whatever takes her fancy- at the moment it is crystals and stationary. She has a tin in her room that she keeps this money in and has around £60 there.

We provide clothes and shoes but if there is anything specific she wants she will buy it or if she wants an expensive item more than what we would normally be willing to pay we will usually go halves with her (like the pale yellow Levi’s jumper!)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/03/2022 23:59

£2 a week. Craft stuff mainly.

JessesMum777888 · 18/03/2022 01:12

15 year old daughter £20 a week (this is bus fair for social time as well) spends mainly in macdonalds and primary’s.
10 year old daughter £10 a week - spends on total shit at the shop and dog treats the dog doesn’t need
11 year old son £10 a week saves it apart from paying the 10 year old a £1 to clean his room 🤦‍♀️

VivienneDelacroix · 18/03/2022 01:23

£5 a week for my 11 and 13 year olds. It was £2.50 until recently when I asked around and thought I was maybe being mean.
They rarely spend it to be honest - they both have about £150 in their accounts. If they do buy something the youngest usually buys books, the oldest buys computer games.

Bromse · 18/03/2022 02:06

It was a very long time ago but at that age I think mine received the equivalent of five pounds a week from me plus whatever grandparents gave him. He spent it however he wanted and it never lasted long :-). It gave him a little bit of independence and he had fun so all good.

I can remember being given five shillings every Saturday morning by my parents at that age which was quite a decent amount then.
