Partial Denture

RoostasTowel · 16/03/2022 14:07

Just seen a thread about how disgusted someone is with their mother not wearing her dentures. A lot of comments about how sore dentures are and how difficult it is to eat with them.
I'm due to get a partial denture next week for 2 missing teeth and I'm already worried about it but hearing that some people never learn to eat with dentures is really freaking me out.

Anyone here have partial dentures and can tell me the reality of it?

I have a denture with two teeth on, never had an issue.

RoostasTowel · 16/03/2022 14:10

Ok. That's a relief to hear. You can eat with them in?

I've got one with 2 teeth on also. I never take them out (apart from when cleaning) I used to use pallette glue stuff to keep them from coming out when eating some stuff that stick to roof of your mouth but it's awful, so I've just got used to it.

I can eat fine. I do avoid things like toffees, but that's not really a problem.

billyt · 16/03/2022 14:54

I had to have this due to an accident.

There is nothing I won't/can't eat except for foods I don't like Grin.

Doesn't affect how I eat either.

Just remove to clean regularly.

SallyWD · 16/03/2022 14:57

My mum has these and she's doing fine. She eats anything and everything! No problem.

Clarabe1 · 16/03/2022 15:05

I think people stop wearing dentures and struggle with certain foods if they don’t fit properly anymore. The bone can shrink over time and they can become uncomfortable then. You can always get them changed though if that happens.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 16/03/2022 15:07

I’ve got one with three back teeth. It’s comfortable, but food can get under it. I don’t wear it all the time.

urrrgh46 · 16/03/2022 15:12

I can't wear mine. Have one top and one bottom each with one tooth on it. Just can't wear either at all.

urrrgh46 · 16/03/2022 15:13

Mines been unwearable since the beginning.

RoostasTowel · 16/03/2022 17:17

@urrrgh46

Mines been unwearable since the beginning.
How is it unwearable? Does it not fit? Is it sore?

You do have to persevere with it; my dentist told me not to take it out apart from to clean for the first few weeks.
If it's painful or rubbing, then go back.

urrrgh46 · 16/03/2022 21:46

I just hate it. The top one is tight on the tooth it attaches to. The bottom one hurts full stop. I can't bit on it at all. I'm very sensory - clothes etc and I just think I won't ever get used to them. When I can work up the courage I'll have implants put in instead.

peridito · 04/05/2022 09:23

How are you getting on @RoostasTowel ? I've just got a partial denture for 2 missing teeth and psychologically I'm devastated .I think this outweighs the physical discomfort .

I just can't get my head round having a denture when I have so many of my own teeth ,but crucially not my two top front teeth .

Hopefully I'll eat less as a result though .

I do by the way know I'm very very lucky to have access to a lovely NHS dentist .

RoostasTowel · 04/05/2022 22:51

@peridito

I haven't had any physical discomfort at all.
Mentally it's taking time to adapt. I'm still not 100% confident.

I wish I was eating less Grin

I had a denturer but now have a bridge which I find tons better. I have changed the way I eat as I can't munch an apple but it just becomes my new normal really

doadeer · 04/05/2022 22:58

Not sure why I wrote denturer like an adventurer lol.

peridito · 05/05/2022 08:00

Thanks Rooster .I'm not particularly in pain ,but I am sore and in discomfort .Eating anything other than porridge feels beyond me .And I can't bear the sight of my missing two top teeth having a lump of rigid plastic in my mouth is just awful .
My emotional response seems out of proportion.I'm devastated .How can I kiss and be intimate ?
I don't feel able to take it out when my partner or son are in the house .So will have to schedule breaks when they are out .

Honestly I'm so depressed .All I want to do is stay in bed and sleep .

Even the hope of implants which I guess I might have to go for ( using a credit card ) doesn't make me feel much better .

All this because old crowns ( over 40 years ) came out ,were replaced by a cantilevered bridge which resulted in the anchoring tooth snapping .

Duckface123 · 24/05/2022 16:40

Hi could I jump on this thread, I have lost one of my front top teeth due to an accident, i am so upset about this. My dentist has made an impression of my teeth and sent them off so i can get a temporary tooth, i have no idea what to expect, have read some horror stories. The plan would be to get a dental implant have been referred to a specialist dentist for this so wairing for an appointment. How are you getting on @RoostasTowel , I am just so emotional and upset about what lies ahead 😔

MVision · 24/05/2022 16:49

@peridito do go for dental implants if it makes you feel this bad. They are great and just like having real teeth. Have you had a quote? It might be as you have lost two teeth together the implants could go on one post which may reduce the price a bit. I had sedation for mine and it was totally fine to have done as a procedure.

peridito · 24/05/2022 17:05

Thank you Mvision ,that's encouraging ,especially your experience with the procedure .

Duckface sympathies .It's very upsetting I know .All I know is that there has to be a time lag of a ?couple of months between an extraction/loss of tooth before they can go ahead with the implant .I expect your dentist will fix the temp replacement on to the remaining one .But I don't know .

You'll feel better as you get over the shock .

Duckface123 · 24/05/2022 17:14

Thank you @peridito can i ask do you still wear your dentures. I know it may take some time before i can get the implant I'm just praying the temporary one will be ok in the meantime.

peridito · 24/05/2022 17:39

@Duckface123 yes I'm wearing them .Maybe your tooth will be replaced with a single one attached to an adjacent one ? I had a cantilever bridge which was a crown on one of my front teeth with a false tooth attached to it where the other had been extracted .But that does need the one remaining tooth to be in good condition .And mine failed after a short while because of my bite which is quite a marked underbite ,so this may not be suitable .

When is your next visit ?

ALongHardWinter · 24/05/2022 17:40

I have a partial denture for my two front bottom teeth. I've had it for 4 months now,and I am gradually getting used to eating with it in. At first I found it impossible, and couldn't go out for a meal in a restaurant for the first couple of months, but I persevered with it at home and now I have no trouble at all.

peridito · 24/05/2022 17:43

Thanks longhardwinter ,I keep reminding myself that there are millions of people walking around wearing dentures and clearly the majority of them are coping .
