Partial Denture

RoostasTowel · 16/03/2022 14:07

Just seen a thread about how disgusted someone is with their mother not wearing her dentures. A lot of comments about how sore dentures are and how difficult it is to eat with them.
I'm due to get a partial denture next week for 2 missing teeth and I'm already worried about it but hearing that some people never learn to eat with dentures is really freaking me out.

Anyone here have partial dentures and can tell me the reality of it?

I've never had a problem with a partial denture.

I've had it replaced a couple of times as the jawbone does alter shape.

Unless you want to chew biltong or steak (which I don't because I am veggie) then it isn't a problem.

It would be interesting to know how many people find it pretty plain sailing and for those that don't what the reasons are .

I'm really not a wimp and coped with esophageal cancer and all that that involved ;chemo ,hair loss ,major surgery ,night feeds by pump through my stomach .

@peridito my next visit will be when i get a call from the dentist telling me that my temporary tooth is ready hopefully next werk.. My other big tooth is still there, but is sensitive to touch my dentist seems to think i might need a root canal treatment on that. He said to look out for discolouration ìts fine so far.
The other tooth the other side is absolutely fine ,
When he took the impression we never spoke about how it would be held in place and i didn't ask, i think im in shock.

@Duckface123 - I completely understand you not discussing it .My dentist is lovely (I'm so lucky) but I find anything to do with teeth so distressing and emotional that I zone out during treatment .

Let us know how you get on .

peridito · 24/05/2022 18:03

Meant to add that it must be so much worse for you loosing a tooth suddenly like that in an accident .No wonder you're in shock Flowers

Duckface123 · 24/05/2022 18:14

Thank you @peridito you are very kind, I know in the long term i think i will get it all sorted im just thinking the worst case scenario for everything and its seems like it is so far away, i want everything to happen now. I will let ye know how i get on when i get called back. My dentist is lovely aswell and don't think he would have offered to do the temporary tooth if it wasn't suitable at this time.

I have a partial as my teeth are so damaged from clenching my jaw when I sleep. I can’t have implants as they will break too.

I have a private denture so the teeth are on a metal band which means the roof of my mouth is mainly clear and taste buds (yes - really in the roof of the mouth) aren’t too badly affected.

My current denture is so much more comfortable than the old plastic NHS one and it’s worth investing in one of you can’t afford/don’t suit implants.

peridito · 24/05/2022 20:12

Yes ,I've seen those metal band ones and thought they looked better .It's the plastic on the roof of my mouth that I find most difficult .And yes ,I've noticed the loss of taste .
Tried to suck a Solero the other day and it's just not possible with the plastic .As for sucking anything else Blush ....Another loss .

Hi everyone, just a little update from me, got my partial denture a couple of days ago, so far it's not been too bad. It fits well in the gap. It is strange getting used to the plate on the roof of my mouth. I have been taking it out whenever I eat it feels very weird leaving it in and I'm paranoid about getting food stuck in it. Hope everyone else is doing ok.

peridito · 02/06/2022 21:27

Thanks for update @Duckface123 ,really glad that you're getting on so well .I do get food under mine but I just nip to the bathroom and give it a rinse .

How are you cleaning it ?I gather there's a rapid 3 min siak as opposed to all night but I'm currently just rinsing and brushing .

They're very realistic these days aren't they ?

I had a nasty fall last month and lost two front teeth, the big front one and the one next to it that isn't my other front one, if that makes sense! The one the other side.

I have a partial denture and it is definitely taking some getting used to. It's only a small one and doesn't go much further than my two teeth really, and eating isn't that much of an issue although it takes longer, but I still can't talk properly! I feel like I'm lisping on my t and s and f. My dentist did say it's temporary and talked about implants (£1000 a tooth) or a bridge but he can't do anything more permanent yet as my front tooth was so badly fractured in the fall my root actually snapped and I still have a bit in there. I am on the waiting list to have my gum cut open and get the root out but there's a wait as they're still catching up on Covid appointments and prioritising people that have waited longer

I have the same, it’s a cobalt chrome denture.

I hated the NHS one. Many tears were shed over it. I paid for the chrome one and it was a game changer. I don’t really take it out other than cleaning and I can still eat everything I want to.

@peridito - I know your comment on this thread is over a year old, but I was wondering how you was getting on?

I wasn't brought up with great dental hygiene unfortunately and had caps/crowns on both my upper front teeth plus one of my teeth to the side wasn't great. In 2019 my front teeth crowns cracked whilst eating a Dime bar (that I don't particularly like but had been bought as part of a hamper Xmas present). I had to have 3 dentures on a plate.

I was also devastated and hated the feel. Except when alone in the bathroom to clean it, I never removed it even during the night in the dark.

My teeth overall had worsened due to my own neglect over a long period of ill health - still I didn't realise how bad.

Last summer I visited a dentists whilst on holiday in Turkey after communicating with them for months about implants.

I'd researched the company and had the assessment whilst there on holiday - all free of charge including a taxi to and from the premises over 1 hour away from our hotel.

The staff and premises were all professional, with professional equipment etc - but the upshot was, my jaw bone structure was so poor they couldn't guarantee implants would work (and less so if I had temporary "teeth" put in whilst the implants themselves healed).

I was grateful they were honest (as they could have conned me out of approx £6k plus flights) but so disheartened. Especially as they told me I urgently needed to see a dentist back in the UK (I wasn't registered with one anymore).

Another tooth at the front upper deteriorated with old fillings falling out and the weak tooth chipping. I couldn't find a NHS dentists taking on new patients so in the end had to say it was an emergency.

I had to have this additional tooth and another one added onto my existing denture plate.

I was so upset.

I then had to pay private for additional work which included a in-depth clean and some fillings and advice on treating gum disease. In treating the gum disease by, amongst other measures using inter dental brushes another crown/cap became loose and the private dentist had already told me there was an infection under it which would need treating at some point.

So when the crown fell out due to using the inter-dental brushes, the dentists said there was no way they could fit another - so another tooth added to the denture = 6 now.

I'm still hopeful that I'll be able to improve things enough to have implants as I hate wearing dentures.

I don't have any major problems eating as with tougher foods I just use my natural back teeth.

Nor does it look too bad.

It's just the feel I hate, and the appearance when I remove it.

So I totally get the psychological struggle you refer to.

I try not to have regrets in life but to learn from mistakes etc - but not taking good enough care of my teeth is definitely a regret I live with :(

peridito · 19/08/2023 13:32

Oh goodness @redandrea7119 you've been through it with knobs on !

I still hate mine ,I feel all I need is reins attached to mine and I'll be running races.

Except when alone in the bathroom to clean it, I never removed it even during the night in the dark ha, this is me!
Except apparently it's a no no to leave it in at night, bad for the gums. So now I jump through all sorts of hoops removing it discreetly after partner asleep. Or removing and not speaking.

Mine broke twice ! So I've paid£600 For A metal based one. Its strong and snug and I hate it even more.

It's just the feel I hate, and the appearance when I remove it.Absolutely!
