Misunderstood chatty introverts

60 replies

WanderingFruitWonderer · 16/03/2022 06:10

I just wondered if there other chatty introverts out there, who get mistaken for extroverts?
I'm extremely chatty and friendly, really too much sometimes Blush I get anxious, and I'm very keen for people to like me. I love people myself, most people I meet I find interesting in some way, and I love hearing other people's stories. So I kind of get puppy-like enthusiasm when meeting people and in my nervous desire to connect, I talk a ridiculous amount etc.
However, I also find it exhausting! I love to retreat and be alone and silent, to re-energise. But people don't realise. They think I'm an extrovert. When in fact I'm a very nervous, neurotically chatty introvert!
Does anyone else relate? Also, any quiet extroverts? I wonder how many of us don't fit the introvert/extrovert stereotypes?

[quote ittakes2]I have just discovered inattentive adhd which mostly effects people born as females. Being impulsively chatty can be a sign but considering it sounds like you also get sensory overload combined that increases your chances. Does this sound like you?

I was expecting to find a paragraph about Bogroll there... Grin

I need people. I need alone time.

Currently taking forever to do the supermarket shopping because I'm having my little break before I get out of the car.

DS1 has a collection of diagnoses... I think I know where they've originated from...

@LizzieMacQueen

This is a really interesting thread thank you OP but I am confused by all the talk of recharging batteries.

Do you mean winding down in the evening, like cooking, watching tv, folding laundry?

It's not something I've ever consciously sought out so I'm trying to work out what that means for me.

Thank you. My understanding of battery recharging, is re-energising our minds, in fact our whole selves. The theory is (according to Carl Jung) who came up with it, that introverts re-energise alone, and extroverts re-energise in the company of others. So necessarily, introverts find social gatherings tiring (even if they enjoy it) and extroverts find solitude tiring (even if they enjoy it) Of course it's a huge spectrum, and many people fall somewhere in between on the scale, as PPs have said. Hopefully that answers your question? Smile

Thanks for answering @WanderingFruitWonderer. With that description I'll peg myself as a quiet extrovert but as a PP said upthread, maybe we can be too quick to label ourselves. It does help though, to understand our differences.

I'm another inattentive ADHD person, by the way, so maybe there is a link with chatty introversion.

Icecreamandapplepie · 16/03/2022 13:25

This is me!

I come across as a social butterfly when with others while my husband comes across as quiet and socially inept.

But he is happy around people whereas I find it totally draining and love my own company!

@Donotgogentle - It’s a tricky one Grin

@MayMorris that's fascinating about Christmas cards and photos. I'd not heard that before, but it makes perfect sense.
Interestingly, I've made my own Christmas cards before now, and they'd definitely be nature and landscape themed - either a snow-scape with animals, or a starry night sky. It wouldn't occur to me to include Santa, or any other human face. Also, looking through the photos on my phone - almost all of the natural environment including flowers, plants, wild birds, waterfalls etc. Virtually no people pictures! I'd never made the link before...

@Longcovid21

I dunno, but I love the sound of you. Chatty introverts are my favourite kind of people.
Aww, this is such a lovely kind post. Thank you @Longcovid21. The thread has made good evening reading. Thank you to all who contributed, introverts, extroverts, and ambiverts alike, of both the chatty and silent varieties, and everything in between! Much food for thought Smile
