TomAllenWife · 15/03/2022 23:12

I've come to bed and have started itching all over, from the soles of my feet up to the top of my head, it's umbearable
I have a rash, my face is bright red, boiling hot, throbbing and my lips are swollen & tingling

I literally can't keep still, every bit of me is on fire

I called A&E as we have to here and they're calling me back

Any ideas?? I'm terrified

Yes A+E - GO

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 15/03/2022 23:44

I had a similar reaction a while back. I phoned 999 but was passed to a doctor who sent DH 20 miles to the OOH pharmacy for stronger antihistamines. It was really scary.

TheOrigRights · 15/03/2022 23:46

@TomAllenWife

You can't just turn up to our a&e My breathing is ok, but my lips are still weird The itching is the worst I could pull my skin off
Eh? Are you meant to schedule or accident or emergency? Is there someone where you can just turn up? If so, then go there.

Take more antihistamines. If you can get yourself to A+E safely please go NOW. Any friends nearby who could take you? If not, 999.

unfortunateevents · 16/03/2022 00:35

Are you in the UK? I don't understand why you can't just go to A&E?

SeaToSki · 16/03/2022 00:42

Take another antihistamine, if you let us know which one you took and roughly how much you weigh, we can look up the max dose and which other varieties you canmix it with

I had an allergic reaction to antibiotics and the doctor had me on triple the dose of benalyin plus claritin for the first day

Then call the a and e number again and tell then to hurry up

TomAllenWife · 16/03/2022 00:44

Hello, called 999 as was struggling
Paramedics were there in minutes, definitely allergic reaction, possibly to fresh pesto that I made earlier
Now in A&E waiting as they said that as they food passes through stages of digestion I could have a further reaction

I had a reaction similar to this many years ago after some dental treatment. In the end I needed an ambulance and didn't panic until they got me to hospital and started running whilst pushing me on a trolley. It turned out to be something called delayed anaphylaxis.

You need to get to hospital straight away. Call an emergency ambulance if you need to and don't hesitate!

Hope you're okay.

Squiff70 · 16/03/2022 00:46

Cross-post, sorry!

So glad you're at the hospital now. They will get you sorted.

Andouillette · 16/03/2022 00:54

So pleased you went in. Any cashews in the pesto? They are a very common allergen.

TomAllenWife · 16/03/2022 00:57

No but I put pine nuts in it
The lovely paramedic said it can be down to the concentration of them so who knows

Yeah, s/he's right. I employed a chef who used to get what he called pine mouth a lot.
Redsquirrel5 · 16/03/2022 02:30

Glad to hear you are in A&E I have had this several times unknown reaction. Usually stay about 5 hours. If your tongue swells you need to go or breathing difficulties.

To those saying take more antihistamine you should be careful diagnosing other people and you don’t just keep taking them.

I have an emergency pack and advice. Take an antihistamine and if symptoms increase then take one half an hour after. Then I have steroids and if still reacting go to A&E. This was advice from top Consultant of Immunology. You can’t just keep taking antihistamines willy nilly.

Hope you improve quickly and are able to return home soon TomAllenWife shame about the pesto fresh pesto is delicious.

LoveFall · 16/03/2022 02:38

Thank goodness you got to A & E. I was really worrying. I hope you get properly assessed and given an Epipen to carry with you.

toomanydogsandcats · 16/03/2022 05:54

Christ, what kind of a system is that...you people are nuts to put up with this shitty service. Nowhere else is that dangerous in peacetime. The sooner the NHS is disbanded and cremated the better.

Starryskiesinthesky · 16/03/2022 05:58

Yeah and what do you suggest instead?

NO we do not need to et rid of the NHS, just get rid of the fat cats & the 'art' directive BS. Someone to reduce waste!! (Totally wasteful use of supplies)

@TomAllenWife that was scary for you, I hope you can rest today & aren't rushing off to work!

Porcupineintherough · 16/03/2022 06:20

Glad you are ok OP. Could all.the posters who were saying "A&E just go" please note that in cases of suspected anaphylaxis, you should call 999. Dont try and get yourself to.the hospital as you can deteriorate very quickly and the ambulance carries adrenaline and other treatments that they can administer straight away.

Hope they find the culprit OP, you should be referred on for allergy testing. Ds1 had a similar reaction in Dec and now carries epipens although in his case we havent yet found the cause.

TolkiensFallow · 16/03/2022 07:09

My goodness, I’m glad the paramedic came as these were classic anaphylaxis symptoms. The all over itching is classic. I’m so so glad you are ok OP

Fizzgigg · 16/03/2022 07:44

@TomAllenWife well done for calling an ambulance. Totally the right call for a serious allergic reaction or suspected anaphylactic shock.

So glad you're doing better. You'll have have a big shock and may have a bit of a comedown in the next few days - either from the reaction or the fright. Please look after yourself and if you need any info or support going forwards do get in touch with the Anaphylaxis Campaign who are wonderful. Flowers.

HelloDaisy · 16/03/2022 08:22

Glad you rang 999 and got the right help.

My mum had a similar reaction to kiwi fruit once even though she had been fine with eating them up to that point with no problems before..

TomAllenWife · 16/03/2022 11:00

Thank you so much for checking on me Smile
Finally got home early morning
Moderate allergic reaction
I can see my GP if I want a referral to dermatology

The paramedics and A&e staff were amazing, very grateful but feel like a bit of a drama queen
