I have 300k - please tell me where to live?

This is a bit of a random one but we just discovered that our lovely place in Edinburgh may not be available for us to continue renting.
We have 300k to buy a house but no idea where to live!
We prefer large towns or a city, must have two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Don't mind a flat, but I would much prefer even a tiny garden for the cats.
No kids and we both work from home so can go literally anywhere in the UK!
We are a bit priced out of Edinburgh, DH apprehensive about Glasgow, previously lived in Newcastle which was okay...I feel funny about going too far south, I don't know why??

Anyone have any ideas?
I am so stressed!
We could keep renting, but it's so hard with the two cats even though they are perfect and have caused zero damage to any place we have lived. Argh! Confused

That should say 'at least' two bedrooms*

What are your interests and hobbies? Where do any relevant family members live?

Indoorcatmum · 15/03/2022 20:25

@DownWhichOfLate I enjoy pottery and art classes, we both love restaurants etc but aren't outdoorsy or particularly hobby focused.
Family is in Yorkshire but we aren't concerned about being close to them :)

Durham?

biggreenhouse · 15/03/2022 20:27

when did u live in Newcastle? its changed quite a bit in the 13ish years since I lived there. or the coast Tynemouth/whitley bay is really great now too

Ragwort · 15/03/2022 20:28

Alnwick

Indoorcatmum · 15/03/2022 20:30

@biggreenhouse Whitley Bay could be interesting! I had an idea of it being more for either very young families or retirees... Is this correct?

As we are childless and I'm in my early 30's I am really struggling to find a place where I fit in.

@ragwort

Love Alnwick!

biggreenhouse · 15/03/2022 20:40

@Indoorcatmum it's full of cafes, bars, restaurants, there's a new comedy venue, a few gyms and crossfits to choose from, lots of yoga etc if that's your thing .. plus easy enough to get into newcastle 20 ish mins on the metro

Indoorcatmum · 15/03/2022 20:48

@ragwort I hadn't considered Alnwick, thank you!!

@biggreenhouse I'm going on Rightmove now! You've made it sound lovely. Thank you :)

Perth? Lovely small city, you'd get a lot of house for your money!

RunnerDown · 15/03/2022 21:41

Why is your dh apprehensive about Glasgow. The Southside has loads of nice shops and restaurants. Lots of younger people live there. It’s very eclectic and not as expensive as the West End .

Indoorcatmum · 15/03/2022 21:56

@margotsdevil we may have to take a drive! I've never been there

OP posts:
Indoorcatmum · 15/03/2022 22:00

@RunnerDown
He hasn't had any bad experiences in Glasgow, I think he was just worried about whether it would be safe for me to wander around by myself as he travels a lot for work. We've lived in places where it really wasn't safe to be a woman alone and we don't want to repeat that.
We don't know anyone from Glasgow so I would LOVE to hear some first-hand experiences from people :)
Do you have any specific postcode recommendations?
I would be super open to living there. I love Scotland

Ooh look at this gorgeous house in Halifax! 😍
I’ve no idea what Halifax is like, I just love browsing Rightmove.

Obviously a link would help

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 15/03/2022 22:09

And this one too. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/118873157

audweb · 15/03/2022 22:09

Why on earth would Glasgow be unsafe for a woman to be alone? It’s the biggest city in Scotland, it’s not some dive. There are places in Edinburgh just as rough as the toughest places in Glasgow.

South side, or one of the outer towns, or the west end. All lovely areas.

Indoorcatmum · 15/03/2022 22:14

@audweb
As I said, we have nothing against Glasgow, I would ideally like to move there actually!
I agree, there's unsafe areas everywhere.
I just need to be armed with recommendations for areas to live before I convince DH lol

Cardiff is a great place to live, 3 bed, 2 bath, and courtyard garden within walking distance of city centre.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 15/03/2022 22:17

How about Dunbar or Haddington? You'd still be able to see friends in Edinburgh but it's cheaper and East Lothian is a lovely part of the world.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 15/03/2022 22:19

This probably wouldn’t be suitable for WFH but so lovely. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/120159584

Indoorcatmum · 15/03/2022 22:21

@CoffeethenCrochet
I've never considered Cardiff, have you lived there?
I would love some postcode recommendations!
Thank you for the suggestion. A courtyard like that would actually be easily catproofed

@FatFilledTrottyPuss
I love the character of that place! As I don't drive, I need to be walking distance/have easy UBER a less to amenities :)
