I have 300k - please tell me where to live?

This is a bit of a random one but we just discovered that our lovely place in Edinburgh may not be available for us to continue renting.
We have 300k to buy a house but no idea where to live!
We prefer large towns or a city, must have two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Don't mind a flat, but I would much prefer even a tiny garden for the cats.
No kids and we both work from home so can go literally anywhere in the UK!
We are a bit priced out of Edinburgh, DH apprehensive about Glasgow, previously lived in Newcastle which was okay...I feel funny about going too far south, I don't know why??

Anyone have any ideas?
I am so stressed!
We could keep renting, but it's so hard with the two cats even though they are perfect and have caused zero damage to any place we have lived. Argh! Confused

@giggly I take your point, but I'm from NZ, haven't been in Edinburgh long and I'm just going off info we have received from family and friends. I think I have showed throughout this thread that I would actually love to live in Glasgow and have emailed to set up a viewing :)

@giggly
Wholeheartedly agree, the snobbery towards Glasgow on property threads is maddening, especially from people who have never set foot in the city.
It's one of the top weekends
destinations in the U.K., I moved nearer to Edinburgh several years ago and I feel much safer in Glasgow than Edinburgh.
Go and look, visit get a feel
for it yourself.

@cryofthecurlew
Thank you! It certainly sounds like the consensus is that Glasgow is wonderful! I'm hoping we can set up some viewings for next week :)

Good areas and schools and public transport and great value for your ££

Stirling? Perth feels quite run down but Stirling is really nice. Dunkeld isn't a large town (but then neither is Alnwick) and has lots of arty stuff going on. Or Pitlochry?

Glasgow is awesome - southside or west end. I grew up here and haven't felt unsafe in the city at all

I agree with PP, I feel safer in Glasgow than anywhere else I've lived in UK. The people are so friendly and would do anything to help you. The city centre is well policed. Any trouble tends to be personal to people in certain groups and areas which you would not be part of or need to go to.

If you were considering NI you would definitely get a lot of house for 300k.

An example in Belfast is

But for that you could get an apartment, townhouse, detached or semi detached, close to city centre. Fantastic city, lovely atmosphere and transport links around Belfast are good (not so much in rural areas - I'm looking at you County Derry). Excellent hospitals in Belfast too such as the Royal, the City, Musgrave

^^This my DC lives in a fairly undesirable area been there for three + years and was advised any trouble I’d usually between feuding families just mind your own business and you won’t have any trouble and that’s certainly been the case. Go into the nearest supermarket and everyone smiles and says hello pause briefly and they’ll start a conversation.

@Indoorcatmum Cardiff is lovely. Just the right size with all the amenities but not overwhelming, castle and arcades, bay, lots of lovely areas. Obviously there are areas to avoid like any city but most of it is great. There are some desirable locations in the Vale of Glamorgan if you want to go a bit more rural/countryside that are a half-hour train ride into the city centre. Rhoose where the airport is right on the sea and beautiful but I think you'd have a hard time buying there, properties go very fast.

backintothefire · 16/03/2022 11:51

Glasgow Glasgow Glasgow! Without a doubt. It's a fantastic city and I'd move there tomorrow if I was in a position to.

Get on the train and have a wander around the west end / shawlands. if you don't fall madly in love with it you have no soul Grin

backintothefire · 16/03/2022 12:15

Fab location in the West End

Another Glaswegian here. With that budget you could get a great flat West End or Southside. I agree with the previous poster about Shawlands rather than Pollokshields, but that’s nice enough too. If you’re going Southside, Strathbungo and Maxwell Park all through to Mount Florida Cathcart. For your budget for a big flat you’ll have a great selection and they’re all in places which have shops and cafes close by to them.

If you’re thinking long term and want a garden, the house in Kelvindale is also a fab choice. I think there will be a bit of competition for that. You can walk down to the main areas of West End with shops, cafes etc and it’s got a lovely feel. Great if you’re on your own too. Good luck!
