Not every single day, we all need a duvet day form time to time
But just in general
?

I don't work due to disability but im always clean and wear lipstick and perfume daily to " brighten myself up" as my DM always said!

SarahAndQuack · 15/03/2022 16:13

For me there's a big difference between being clean, and the rest. I hate not having a shower first thing; I think being clean with clean clothes is just basic.

OTOH I am quite happy to be wearing an old cardie full of holes or ancient (clean) flip flops if I'm just mooching around at home. I feel more strongly about this since I had DD: I want to be an example for her and to make her understand that it shouldn't matter how you dress, or whether you can afford the newest clothes.

I like dressing up sometimes, though.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 15/03/2022 16:20

@LovelyYellowLabrador

Homehome not for your benefit but for their benefit
Yes: I think getting dressed and having a bit of a spruce up is good for maintaining a positive outward facing outlook for lots of people.

And it is a self perpetuating thing, if you feel bright and friends comment, it gives you a mini boost.

Whereas if you mooch about in scruffy Jim jams with bed head hair, you might be thoroughly enjoying the unwind and relaxation but you might end up feeling more depressed because you think you look a sight.

Conversely I think people who just can’t step out without full make up, or won’t go in the pool on holiday in case they mess up their hair, for example, are possibly stressed, anxious or lacking the self confidence to just be themselves.

Feeling like your authentic self and feeling ok is the important thing.

Parker231 · 15/03/2022 16:25

Different clothes for different occasions but always clean clothes and showered with hair done. Am working from home most of the time so wear jeans and a hoodie and then change into gym gear for a class or run.
Am a big fan of pjs to relax in. At Christmas we often have three generations wearing pjs all Christmas Day.

Lovinglife45 · 15/03/2022 16:25

I do my hair and wear minimal make up daily (concealer, eyebrow pencil and mascara).

I also plan my clothes even when working from home or doing the school run.

Looking good makes me feel good.

Apart from occasion wear, I make a conscious effort to wear the majority of items in my wardrobe.

Thatsplentyjack · 15/03/2022 16:28

@StopFeckingFaffing

I quite like being someone who "brushes up well"

I make minimal effort on a day to day basis, I'm always clean and clothes aren't falling apart or anything but I don't bother with make up and wouldn't dream if wearing high heels etc

I do like to make an effort for special occasions but couldn't be bothered doing it every day

I'm the same now. When I was younger I used to do hair and make up every day, even just to pop to the shop, now I out my hair up, eat my face and put eat clothes on and that's me. I don't have a job where there's any point making an effort though.
BeanStew22 · 15/03/2022 16:33

Nope, I like to pull out ‘super-best’ a few times a year

Always wear make up & dress well for work
Mostly if I’m going somewhere too (socially, not just to pop to shops etc)

So I have 3 levels

  • scruff
  • decent (day to day)
  • and best :)
ThreeRingCircus · 15/03/2022 16:34

I wouldn't go out of the house in anything with stains on, and my hair is always brushed, face washed etc. I rarely go out of the house without some make-up on just because I feel I look knackered without a bit of tinted moisturiser, mascara etc.

I've not been making as much as an effort with my clothes since lockdown. I'll get dressed every day but more often than not it's joggers, a jumper and trainers. I feel rubbish to be honest and I've put on weight as been living in elasticated waistbands! So I need a kick up the arse because when I think I look decent then I feel good.

M0RVEN · 15/03/2022 16:45

I’m self employed but I work outside the house most days of the week. I’ve never noticed the hairstyle of anyone I work with so I’m not sure what you mean by “ done”. I’ve not noticed anyone smelling so I guess they wash and brush their teeth.

We all wear clothes that are appropriate for the job - top trousers and work boots. Sometimes hi vis. I’ve never seen any of them wear make up, let alone lipstick and perfume to “ brighten themselves up “. It actually made me laugh to even imagine that - they would get such a ribbing from the others.

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 15/03/2022 16:55

I have chronic pain so can be inconsistent too based purely on that. But either way do it, or dont do it, based on what you want not the expectations of others

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 15/03/2022 16:58

I read threads like this and realise I'm actually a man when it comes to things like 'looking my best'.

Clean body/hair/teeth, appropriate clothes, ready to go wherever needed.

Keladrythesaviour · 15/03/2022 16:58

I'm always showered and hair brushed, I try and make a rough effort if I'm going to a restaurant or somewhere nice but in all honesty I mostly look like I've been dragged through a hedge. I'm either walking the dog or have been walking the dog and it's so muddy where I live there's no much point getting nice clothes dirty. I do a lot in the garden, so again rough clothes work. I work in quite a dusty/dirty place and we are all in jeans and rough tops for that reason. I do my make up sometimes and I have my nails done for nice occasions. But daily? Nah.

00100001 · 15/03/2022 17:09

I hate that make up is normalised in our culture and people feel "grim" or "undressed" without it

jytdtysrht · 15/03/2022 17:13

If that’s what floats your boat, then yes it’ll be good for you.

It doesn’t float mine, I want to be quick and comfortable. I don’t care what I look like or what anyone thinks.

AuntFlorence · 15/03/2022 17:18

I never used to worry about it, I thought well I am the same person in trackies/trainers/mumbun as I am with hair done/make up on/ smart clothes

But you know what, other people respond to me so differently and I am sick of being talked down to. So I am making more of an effort.

It shouldn't matter, but it does.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 15/03/2022 17:30

I probably only dress up once every couple of months, rarely wear make-up.
WFH - clean and hair brushed, plain comfy clothes.
Office - clean and hair brushed, smarter clothes!
Out out is dress up time - dress/jumpsuit and make-up and maybe even hair products.
My self esteem & happy mood isn't really linked to my appearance.

cloudyrain · 15/03/2022 17:52

Pre-covid my daily routine was shower including hair wash, make up, blow dry and smart clothes 6 days a week, out to work M-F changing into jeans/yoga pants/shorts when I got home depending on what I was doing that evening. Saturdays would be running errands and going out then on Sunday if I wasn't going out of the house I would just wear comfy clothes as I would be doing housework, paperwork or DIY.

Now I work from home I still get up and shower every day, but I don't wash and blow dry my hair daily it doesn't need it, I think it is the change in environment and the reduction in styling products. I have updated my make up it is much more subtle and more about skin care than enhancement plus I don't feel the need to change this to pop out on errands, if I ever did a face to face client meeting again I would do more, as I do if I go out out.

Even if I have nothing on or just work with no human interaction I can't get up and dressed without a shower, skin care routine, hair brush and clean clothes. I just feel ill, in fact if I am unwell I am always better if I shower.

Clothing is always clean but much more casual, I have office trousers that haven't been worn in 2 years same with shoes, some have now been donated as I will never wear them again.

My daily look is now jeans/yoga pants/shorts that are comfort over style but smart enough that I can leave the house without changing, my tops can be more fancy as I still wear my favourite office selection from time-to-time, today I am wearing jeans, a long sleeve t and a fleece as I have no meetings.
I only wear flat shoes now usually trainers or flip flops even my going out shoes are flat.

carefullycourageous · 15/03/2022 17:55

@Tinkerbellflowers

Yes, its good for self-esteem.
It is if your self-esteem is based on your appearance.
LadyMacduff · 15/03/2022 17:58

I find it hard at the moment to care tbh. In my 20s, i wouldn't even go to the corner shop without a full face of make up but now, as long as i'm clean, hair brushed i'm not bothered. It's not the best look but I find it so annoying clarting on with fucking foundation when I just need to get out the house. I persist with eyeliner, mascara and eyebrows for work because that only takes me a minute.

carefullycourageous · 15/03/2022 17:58

@LovelyYellowLabrador

I’m The inconsistent one One day I could be looking great the next day I Habent even done my hair So I’m trying to find some sort of motivation To keep it up on a daily or almost daily Basis
I think this is fine, why fight your nature?

I am also inconsistent and fine with it.

Nidan2Sandan · 15/03/2022 18:03

Meh, I'm happy sobbing in PJs all day. I just dont get much chance to do it.

My day to day is up and dresses in joggers, tshirt and trainers. Hair may or may not be brushed, but will be in a ponytail either way. No make up on.

I wfh 3 days a week and I dont see how a Teams meeting would require me to look like I stepped out of the make-up chair.

2 days I go into the office I will do my hair and wear make-up but I wear my "nicer" casual clothes. Unless I have a court hearing in which case I go all out.

I do enjoy dressing up and putting on a full face of make up for special occasions, but really couldn't be arsed with doing it for school runs and Teams meetings.

For me I know I have good skin and am comfortable with my "natural" face. I do feel a bit sad for people who wont step out their front door without make-up on. I just feel like they must not feel comfortable with their natural face.

Foghead · 15/03/2022 18:08

It’s good for mental wellbeing to get up, have a wash and clean teeth and get into clean clothes. A day off here and there is fine. Beyond that is individual choice.

CPL593H · 15/03/2022 18:11

I've definitely cared less as I've got older, went through the whole teen thing of wanting to look wonderful in case I Saw A Boy and brought up by a mother who was later horrified that I could nip out for milk without a full face.

Kind of always try to do my eyebrows though otherwise I even more closely resemble a naked mole rat

Nomoreusernames1244 · 15/03/2022 18:18

Define “looking your best”

Best is subjective. I happen to think people look great when they are comfortable and not worried about how they look 😂

For me “best” is clean, and comfy. Part is keeping my body in shape as well, i look better at a healthy weight.

declutteringmymind · 15/03/2022 19:25

So I'm getting better than this but it's bloody hard work.

So I've figured out the best day and best way to wash and dry my hair and have found a simple yet groomed blow dry method that takes 10 mins.

Good skincare, mainly in the shower means I need very little make up - concealer, bronzer, tinted lip balm and highlighter.

A pretty necklace or earrings always lift a look. I have a few gold plated ones that I can wear in the shower.

I'm going for the wholesome groomed look as opposed to the done up like a dogs dinner look.

Also accessories and coats cover up a multitude of sins.

Nails trimmed and filed

Spritz of something that smells expensive.

Eyebrows groomed

Eyelash serum to avoid falsies

A very subtle highlights close to your own hair colour or a blunt edged cut always look a bit more groomed.

An internal heel to improve posture (need to order some)

Iron your clothes.

I'm ticking these off more frequently than I used to but still on a bit of a journey!
