Pets 4 Homes - Rehoming Geniune?

Hi there does anyone have any knowledge/experience of people rehoming via this site. Are the majority geniune?

We re-homed our girl from there. You just have to be very careful, ask lots of questions. Do you know where the dog originally came from? Are you sure it doesn't have any health issues? Can you meet the dog at their home, not in a random park or something. Proof the dog is theirs, microchip info, vaccination info. The old owners should want to see your house and garden too if they're legit.

Just be careful, basically.

girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 07:34

They're no more or less genuine than people on Gumtree.

It's still just the general public.

BertieBotts · 14/03/2022 07:34

Pretty sure the majority are puppy/kitten farmers, but there must be a few genuine people on there.

GreyCarpet · 14/03/2022 07:39

We got our rabbits through them.

Was a hobby breeder who had a good set up. We were able to see the hutches, the parents, she explained loads of the care of them so we knew the welfare was good. She'd given over her whole garden to the rabbits and they had a good life with her. She asked us a lot of questions too.

Whatever animal you're looking for, you'd have to go and make your own judgement

we rehomed our lovely dog from
there. i saw the ad while o was on holiday and she looked just like the lovely girl we had just lost. i called and she had been rehomed.

the day we arrived home i got a call that she had been returned as she was too liveley. so we drove 300 miles to meet them at a service station to get her.

she is now (3 years later) receiving lots of love snuggling me right now. However it was dodgy as hell and i am relieved we weren't scammed.

(the woman did keep texting me for a while saying she regretted giving her up. i was polite but weaned off contact - i thought she was going to ask for her back!)

We bought a cat via pets4homes - definitely a genuine person who was concerned to find the right home, we still send her updates.

We deliberately went for a slightly older cat rather than young kitten as that weeded out most of the people breeding for cash.

Some smaller animal charities list on P4H, as well as people like the person we got our cat from who have genuine reasons for rehoming and want to vet potential owners themselves rather than hand their pet over to a shelter.

But yes you do have to use a lot of judgement, ask lots of questions.

We’ve had all our pets from there- I’ve always had re-homed pets rather than one straight from a breeder.

It’s always been ok for us, our dog seems to know he’s been given a 2nd chance and he’s the best boy!
I sometimes think we were stupid to travel as far as we did to get an unknown dog (who smelt so bad when we got him!) but 2 years later he’s still the best dog we’ve ever had.

Our rabbits are very naughty - they were given up by separate people as the owners couldn’t cope with them but we’ve given them a huge space to play in and they get a lot of interaction to stop them being bored and they loved each other so again, it’s worked out well. They also seem to realise they’re in a better home so they’re happier which makes their behaviour better.

Rarenamer · 14/03/2022 07:55

Just to add- we took our dog to the vets the very next day to check micro chip and changed the details that day too as I was worried it would turn out to be a stolen pet and I didn’t want my children to get attached to a dog if we potentially had to give back to original owners.

Once that was done I was much happier.

Scraggythang · 14/03/2022 09:28

My dog came from there. Accidental litter, though. Not a technically a re-home. No pedigree just couldn’t get their BIL dog of theirs 😂. There were a lot of what looked like puppy farm pups on there though asking for mega bucks. So I would beware of that.

We just paid to cover the vet bills and the mothers owner gave us food, his bed, toys and all his vaccination certificates. Went to the family home twice before we picked him up to see him and meet mum and 3 other pups. She ended up giving the other 3 to friends as she didn’t trust the people coming to visit from enquiries on pets4homes 😂.

girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 09:32

OP I think I interpreted this differently to everyone else.

Do you want to use pets 4 homes to rehome your pet? That's how I understood it.

PoxyPixie · 14/03/2022 10:43

I wouldn’t trust a breeder on there but I’d be fine with animals that were being rehomed. You can always just go to a rescue instead though if you aren’t sure whether to trust the adverts on P4H or similar sites.

theemmadilemma · 14/03/2022 10:44

I've helped a couple of people rehome their dogs via that site. Both genuine.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 14/03/2022 10:49

I am also wondering whether you are an owner looking to remove your own pet, or whether you are a wanting a new pet.
If you are looking to rehome your cat / dog etc I would personally go through a rescue. Let them do the suitability checks for you.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 14/03/2022 10:50

Rehome, not remove!

tabulahrasa · 14/03/2022 10:57

It’s not rehoming - it’s buying and selling.

Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 10:57

@PutinIsAWarCriminal I’m looking to get a dog and would like to rehome one if we can. We had a dog from a rescue centre pre-children but he was always very anxious and I think the time he spent in kennels added to that, so would prefer to rehome from another home if we can.
Thanks for all your feedback

Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 11:00

@tabulahrasa there are older dogs on their looking for new homes due to owners circumstances. The prices are not dissimilar to what we paid when we rescued our previous dog (many years ago) from a rescue centre.
I’d imagine (the genuine ones) charge a fee to discourage those looking to not care for the dog as a family pet.

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 11:01

@Moonopoly do you have specific requirements for a dog?

girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 11:02

I ask because I know someone who needs to rehome a dog. Dogs Trust are looking for a foster home because they're not suitable for kennels.

Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 11:02

@girlmom21 yes we need a lower allergen dog and also suitable to be around younger children.

OP posts:
Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 11:03

@girlmom21 are you able to share what breed?

OP posts:
Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 11:03

PM if you’d prefer

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 14/03/2022 11:04

It's a Staffie bitch but she's never been around children and she'd need some decent socialising and a lot of time and affection so probably not a good option for you unfortunately

NoSquirrels · 14/03/2022 11:05

Most of the ones I see locally to us on P4H are quite clearly from breeders offloading their animals when they can no longer have litters. It’s really sad.

Like anywhere else that’s advertising private arrangements just be wary and ask all the questions you need to. It’s potentially quite a risky thing if you have children. Going via a good rescue centre would ultimately be better.

Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 11:05

@girlmom21 no sadly I don’t think she sounds like a fit. I hope she finds a good
foster home
