Thank you! She's a lovely dog and if I didn't have young children I'd have her myself!

Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 11:07

@girlmom21 fingers crossed for her

If you rehome from pets4homes, ask to photos of when dog/cat was younger. They should be able to show you loads of photos.

I bought my 2 bitches from pets4homes. I went to visit them 3 times before taking then home. I saw Mum feeding all 6 pups and I saw Dad. I got pedehree certificates and vets report showing first vaccination and second vaccination was pre paid. I got scent blanket from Mum and siblings for each pup and I send seller a photo each year on girls birthdays. They did not leave seller until 14 weeks old so both confident pups. Turned into wonderful affectionate well behaved bitches. I would buy from there again but always ask to see parents, proof of ownership etc.

no less genuine but i bought a pretty ill dog that was seriously untrained with no microchip details. they then went on to post multiple dogs

There definitely are genuine sellers on P4H and on gumtree, just have to be very very careful. I have rehomed older dogs over the years since I was young, some from horrible conditions, and I have recently bought a pedigree puppy from P4H and he is amazing and perfectly healthy. It is not always easy to rehome a dog, especially an older dog, they need that extra care and attention, and monitoring in case of behavioural issues with their change of circumstance and history, that first time pet owners may struggle with. The breeder I dealt with was genuinely lovely, and answered every question I had straight away, and had every piece of documentation and health information to hand, and gave copies of everything. Any genuine sellers will not hide their homes, dogs/parents, vet information, pedigree information, insurance, licensing etc, and will be willing to answer questions/ provide videos and pictures. If visiting to see a pup/dog, always check the house.... does it look like the dog/pups are actually living full time in the persons home? If it is a litter of pups you are looking at, more often than not they won't be reared inside someone's home..... make sure you are happy that you have seen where the pet has been housed majority of the time.... quite often pups/dogs are pictured in a pristine house or "family home" on the sofa, but they live outside. A good breeder/owner will show all living spaces
@tabulahrasa there are older dogs on their looking for new homes due to owners circumstances. The prices are not dissimilar to what we paid when we rescued our previous dog (many years ago) from a rescue centre.
I’d imagine (the genuine ones) charge a fee to discourage those looking to not care for the dog as a family pet.
Oh I’m aware people sell on older pets on reselling websites.

But you’ve got to ask yourself, why? Why would you decide that’s the way to find the best home for your pet if your circumstances mean you can’t keep them?

Because there are absolutely genuine reasons to need to rehome a pet, but no-one sensible who cares about their pet would do it by selling it.

Moonopoly · 14/03/2022 12:47

@tabulahrasa is it not because they don’t want them going to kennels where they are not guaranteed a home? Our previous dog had spent nearly a year in kennels and it effected him quite badly, lots of the dogs in there barked non stop

Well if I was worried about my dog going into kennels I’d be in contact with organisations that rehome straight from your home and ones that use foster homes - because both exist.

So yes there will be some people selling their dog because they didn’t think to actually check anything else out, but there’ll also be people who’ve been refused a rescue space because of their dogs behavioural issues, people who know there’s a huge medical bill outstanding, people who’ve generally neglected their dog and now just want to pass it on and people who bought it the same way and want their money back.

I can only speak from my experience but my I’ve rehomed a cat from a (large well known) rescue who just went through a quick check list to determine we were a suitable home, no home visit, just basic details like age of kids, garden, proximity to a road etc.

When I rehomed a cat from P4H I spent about 45mins on the phone to the owner initially, then spent over an hour at her house meeting the cat, sent photos of my house and surroundings etc. Then the owner chose us over other potential owners she also met because she liked us most.

We keep in touch and I send an update every few months.

Honestly if we ever had to rehome I’d probably do the same.

Just been scammed on this site by Atlanta Wilshire, fully vaccinated in pets4homes listing means in truth completely unvaccinated and they and breeder say buyer beware. So be warned, don’t use them.

We got DBoycat2 from there. We were looking for an adult cat of a specific breed and every person we approached was genuine and honest including one gentleman who said that his boy wouldn't get on with our girl. It took a little time but it was worth it. DBoycat2 is the sweetest cat we've ever had.

Frazerstreames · 13/02/2026 08:30

That’s great, and it went well. If it didn’t you’d be in trouble as in effect it’s gumtree for pets, not eBay or Etsy.
