What do you do with clothing that's beyond charity donations ?

Diplidocus4 · 12/03/2022 22:41

I've got things like socks with holes , jeans with rubbed thighs, pants with frayed elastic .
What do you do with yours ? Old clothes ?
I'm trying to not "landfill" anything but not sure if the rag material bag would be these type of things ?

Cut them up for 'garage rags'. Eg dirty jobs where it's not worth washing the cloth afterwards. Like cleaning the fire out, washing car wheels etc.

RandomMess · 12/03/2022 22:49

Some charities get a few £ per kilo for this type of thing and it goes to recycling

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/03/2022 23:00

I take them to our local tip as they have a recycling station for fabrics. I'm sure most tips have the same service.

You can give them into the charity shop labelled as 'rags'

BluebellsGreenbells · 12/03/2022 23:19

Charity shops sell them on. They get shredded and recycled.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 12/03/2022 23:20

Fabric recycling bin at our local tip

Shodan · 12/03/2022 23:21

Either use them as rags around the house/garage/garden, or else our council will collect small bags of them for recycling along with our bins.

Quite often I'll cut out the good parts (especially on jeans) and use them to patch, or make something else out of them. I even cut off buttons and zips to reuse.

Ff10n · 12/03/2022 23:23

Most charity shops will take them and sell them by the kilo to rag merchants. Helpful if you label the bag as such so they don't have to sort them.
Or put them in a charity textiles bin. It all gets sorted and sent to the right place.

Gingernaut · 12/03/2022 23:25

Rug making.

If the clothes are clean, see if any crafters need supplies.

I bin them.

Kite22 · 12/03/2022 23:46

Soft things like pyjamas or t-shirts I sometimes cut up for cloths.

Most stuff though goes to the charity shop, clearly marked as 'rags' as they can sell it by the kilo.

Chocolateteabag · 12/03/2022 23:49

Just dropped a (marked as) rag bag into my nearest charity shop - double checking for the umpteenth time that they didn't mind

No - and happy that I had labelled it so they didn't need to sort it themselves

They will get money from your old socks so def don't just bin!

Hawkins001 · 12/03/2022 23:52

As my limited knowledge is some charity s do rag some, that would be my best guess

BridgesofMadisonfan · 12/03/2022 23:59

Can shoes be recycled in this way?

Saisong · 13/03/2022 00:01

For shoes take them to Clarkes - they have a shoe bin (at least our local one does). They take shoes in any condition for reuse or recycling

silentpool · 13/03/2022 01:03

Teeshirts become cleaning rags, saving on paper towels.
Wearable stuff to charity shop.
I'm going to take other kinds of clothes (Lycra, old socks etc to one of the High St stores that offers textile recycling.
Buttons etc get saved.

Discodancinggiraffe · 13/03/2022 05:07

I sew so I cut off all the buttons and zips to reuse. Then salvage any fabric I to reuse. I might use the rest for rags. Anything left over goes in the clothes donation bin. It is my understanding even rags get recycled.

Kitkat151 · 13/03/2022 05:11

@Motheranddaughtertotwo

I bin them.
So do i
sashh · 13/03/2022 05:18

Another vote for labelling as rags.

Or making a rag rug

Would you honestly give that house room? 🙄

LemonDrizzles · 13/03/2022 05:26

Most H&ms will take them. The city dump also will take them. They can be recycled into other uses

sashh · 13/03/2022 07:49

No I'd gift it to someone, maybe to you.

Svara · 13/03/2022 08:12

Anyone know what to do with older children's pants? Age 11-12. Still in very good condition. When DS was younger I gave them to school, age 10 he wore for years so they are now rags, don't know what I do with these though!

AllotmentTime · 13/03/2022 08:42

Suggest to your kids’ school that they put a clothing bank in the driveway, pick a company/charity that takes rags as well as clothes. Either the school gets a bit of money or your chosen charity does. Wine either way!

My DCs’ school did this recently and it’s been very popular!
