What do you do with clothing that's beyond charity donations ?

I've got things like socks with holes , jeans with rubbed thighs, pants with frayed elastic .
What do you do with yours ? Old clothes ?
I'm trying to not "landfill" anything but not sure if the rag material bag would be these type of things ?

Er, that should have been “win” either way Blush

mdh2020 · 13/03/2022 08:44

Our local fire station has a collecting bin and they are sold for recycling in aid of firemen’s charities.

FoxyFoxyLoxy · 13/03/2022 08:46

I'm a volunteer in a major charity shop chain and we will happily take bags marked rags - old pants, torn t-shirts, odd socks etc. There is a market for this sort of textiles, we get paid by weight for the charity and the merchant sorts it, grades it and either sells it on, or shreds it for use in things like sofas and mattress stuffing.

Please do not just bin clothing.

I've managed a chain charity shop and volunteered in anotjer, both of them accepted old worn out shoes as rag waste too, this is still the case where I live so give your local shops a quick ring (phones permitting), every penny counts and would often make the difference between paying rent or not.

Local Asda has fabric recycling bins so I put it in those. I think they accept most things.

Diplidocus4 · 13/03/2022 09:07

Thank you all , wasn't sure how "rag" it could be , bag labelled and ready to drop off Smile

Textile recycling bin in Sainsbury’s car park.

Baaaa · 13/03/2022 09:14

Would you honestly give that house room? looks great for a kids room

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/03/2022 09:17

Charities can still get money for these. If they can't sell something they get money for rag.

Clothes Recycling bin in supermarket car park, textile recycling at tip

@Svara

Anyone know what to do with older children's pants? Age 11-12. Still in very good condition. When DS was younger I gave them to school, age 10 he wore for years so they are now rags, don't know what I do with these though!
I use these specifically for cleaning the bathroom ... a separate one for the loo and one for the sink then put them straight into the next hot wash. Once they finally start getting holes and tears in from frequent use I'll bin them (feels a bit 🤮 to then put in a rag bag?)
Skinterior · 13/03/2022 09:33

You can send anything to Regain

regain-app.com/

They resell or recycle everything - anything really trashed can be shredded and turned into things like wadding for car seats. In return you get discount vouchers for brands you like.

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz
I already have all the age 10 pants for rags. Guess they will have to go in the clothing bin.

BridgesofMadisonfan · 13/03/2022 17:15

@Saisong

For shoes take them to Clarkes - they have a shoe bin (at least our local one does). They take shoes in any condition for reuse or recycling
Thank you
Stroppypeople · 13/03/2022 17:21

The bin and occasionally dog bed !

upinaballoon · 13/03/2022 20:11

I wear them.

confusedlots · 13/03/2022 20:13

I bag up and leave into H&M and you get a £5 voucher. I buy some kids clothes in H&M so I always use the voucher, and the clothes get recycled or reused

I cut suitable cotton bits out to give to a friend who quilts for charity and put the leftover bits plus other clothes in a bag and label it 'clean rags', It gets donated with the next batch of stuff to the charity shop.

I wash it all first, and check with the shop that they take it.

bananaboats · 14/03/2022 19:10

I just bin them too.

Readyforspring · 14/03/2022 19:16

Socks pants etc bin

Clothes that are holey, stained far too washed out. Get cut into rags for dh work. Used till death then bin

Readyforspring · 14/03/2022 19:17

Saves buying rags saving loads

Bigoldmachine · 14/03/2022 19:27

Similar to pp i sew so cut off any god bits of fabric o could use for anything else, plus any elastic, buttons, zips etc. If not good enough to make something out of I cut it up for cleaning rags. If not big enough or an unsuitable material I bag them up marked textiles and can put them out with my recycling (lucky that my council collect textiles recycling)

BirdOnTheWire · 14/03/2022 19:29

Our council bin collection will take bags of rags for recycling.

Jemimapuddleduk · 14/03/2022 19:30

Use as cleaning cloths.

JimmyDurham · 14/03/2022 19:31

DW works in a charity shop. She says they would take them and get a couple of quid for them as "rags".
